BRENDA -

The highest I've ever been ranked? You're looking at it!

You may have come to the right spot in order to keep your record with flats clean. I have quite a history with flats, ovrall, and I think I deflect them from other people onto me. (Uh, another service I provide as a Full Service Mentor?? )

I've had them in three races and many training rides. And what really hurts is that I take good care of my tires, inflating regularly; is tnere no justice.?? It also hurts that about 80% of my flats have happened to the harder-to-change rear tire. Humbug!

More on flats later....................for now I'm just trying to have a pleasant evening!

Way to go, GEORGE! Congrats on finishing the race, never having done the distance before. I love your enthusiasm over your wife and son. Kudos to them, too!

And to STEVE - thank you so much for being our DEFLECTOR OF FLATS!

CATHY -

Beautiful photo, two cute little sweet peas!

Goals look good, too (although they pale in comparison with the photo! ). Both seem to be well within your reach, while still satisfying that goal of a goal -- that it should stretch you some. Was the previous half-marathon PR also at Ottawa?

BRENDA -

I'm still trying to perfect my system of deflecting flats from others. It's actually fairly complicated. The way it's SUPPOSED to work is that the Deflection happens, and then I Absorb them. This should be a kind of balck-hole type of arrangement, where the Absorption is a complete Internalization.............and it's over and done with. The glitch appears, however, as a failure in the Internalization, as what subsequently happens is Externalization in the form of my more-than-normal rate of flattage.

Back to the drawing board?

PENSIVE PACKERS AND STEELERS FANS, PERHAPS?

My, my --- aren't we quiet out there, all ye fans with a Vested Interest in the game.

By my count, we have the Wisconsin hardcore of SARAH, LORI, and LAURA, and then the don't-know-how-they-got-that-way duo of BRENDA and ROGER, who are going for Green Bay. (I am a distant 6th in this group, kind of along for the ride.)

On the other side there is clearly DAVID, and I suspect JOHN as well.

So, have fun tonight, gang, and for the losing fans take heart -- as least your team made it further than my PatsBrowns49ers hoped-fors!

Hey everyone, I'm looking at the Kestrel Talon Tri bike and wanted to see if anyone knows about this bike.  What I have read so far on the internet it sounds like a good bike.  Problem is I have no idea what size I need.  My local bike shop here charges $75 for bike fitting but they only sell 2 brands the cervelo and giant.  Both are nice bikes but out of my price range at this time.  I found a bike shop that has a Kestrel 48cm tri bike 2010 for sell and its marked down about $700.  I went to this website and put in my measurements which are
Inseam: 26, Trunk: 25.5, Forearm: 13, Arm: 26, Thigh: 22.5,  Lower Leg: 20, Sternal Notch: 56, Total Body Height: 67...
This website gave the following info based on my measurements: Seat tube range c-c: 42.7 - 43.2, Seat tube range c-t:   44.0 - 44.5, Top tube length: 54.1 - 54.5, Stem Length:10.6 - 11.2,  BB-Saddle Position: 56.1 - 58.1, Saddle-Handlebar:  50.5 - 51.1, Saddle Setback: 0.3 - 0.7

Below is the link to the kestrel site which has the specs on the bike.
http://www.kestrelbicycles.com/TRI/Talon-Tri.aspx

If anyone is good on bikes please let me know if you think a 48cm will work. If it would I would love to try and get this bike before they sell it.. I looked and the nearest dealer for kestrel is about 2 hours away....

GEORGE -

VERY good entry level tri bike, one that would serve you well for many years, I think.

I will look into the bike itself a bit further, and also take your measurements to by own bike shop and see what they think.

I am terrible at this, to the point that I can never remember the size of my OWN bike. For true! I can remember all sorts of utterly useless things, but something near and dear to me, such as my bike? Ack!

The hardcore Packers peeps here should be giddy with glee right now, basking a 14-0 lead.

and the Packers win!  This was a great game, I think, no matter who you were cheering for!  It's funny because I try to teach my students about sportsmanship and I really just wanted to see a good game tonight and I think it was.  They told me that the Packers were going to lose and I would reply, well, they might.  They would look at me a little confused.  And then I tell them, do you think that will make me not like them?  I will still like them whether they win or lose!

Also, I just started training for a half marathon in May, so I am really excited!  I have done one and it was AMAZING, so I can't wait to do it again!  This will also help a lot with my tri training and endurance, so I welcome the challenge!

Ugh........The Packers win.  Even though I knew they would, I couldn't cheer for them.  Sorry Packers fan but I am a diehard Bears fan.  I even bet against the Packers against a biking friend.  Now I have to do a biking workout or race of his choice when it gets nice out.  If Pitt would have won, I was going to make him run a 1/2 Mary.  No such luck though.  Good Game.

Sorry I neglected to mention you in the (rather short) list of Steelers fans here. There was some sloppiness on their part, but they made a game of it, to be sure. It's too bad for them, as next season the BROWNS will be all over them; I wouldn't have it any other way!

JOHN -

That's kind of high stakes betting there! I'd rather pay someone a certain sum of money, as opposed to doing a race of their choice. And I half-marathon is no small peanuts, so you're plan for him was qyite weighted (or is it freighted?).

Maybe I speak too soon, though. Maybe what he'll have for you is Badwater, or Western States 100!

LAURA -

I think you should do a spin-off from John's bet (see a couple of posts above this one) and show up at school and tell your class that seeing as how the Packers won, it'll be the homework assignment of test of your choice. Say that with a grave expression on your face first thing, and let' em squirm for a few hours!

Congrats on signing up for the HM! And which one is it? You're right, that trianing for it will be a great way to springboard your tri training and overall conditioning. Cool beans!

Happy Monday everybody!!

Friday nights race was fun. Lots of cool cars I bet there were close to 75 cars total. In my division (adults really big kids) there were 14 cars. I came in third in all three heats all of them were pretty close but fun none the less.

George Congratulations on your race and congratulations to your wife and son.

Hey Everyone, I have a bike question..
I was looking at a Kestrel Tri Bike and I have been thinking.  When I went to my local bike shop they told me that I should buy a road bike and then put aero bars on it.  He said that when riding with a group most people dont ride in the aero position due to breaking out of the pack and also easier to control.. I started to think what he said and tried to remember back when I had a bike I had a cannondale road bike with tri bars.  The shifters where on the down bar of the frame.  What I remember is when I was on a flat road I would ride in the aero position, but going up a hill I would stay in the saddle but come up from the aero position.  So the thinking started.. On flat ground I would usually be in one gear which if I buy a road bike and put aero bars then I can put the bike in the correct gear and then get down in the aero position and ride, if I have to go up a hill then I would get up and change the gears on the brake set.. If I had a tri bike then the gears would be at the tip of the bars which would make it difficult to change gears in the up position. I know one difference in road from tri bikes is the angle of the seat, which I seen some bikes that on the seat post it has a way to adjust the angle.  What is everones input.. Do you like the full tri bikes or road bikes with aero bars??

He said that when riding with a group most people dont ride in the aero position due to breaking out of the pack and also easier to control..

What? The control issue is important. There are more little speed changes, and potentially more braking in a pack, so being closer to the brakes is more important. You will  shift more frequently and often more subtle  in a pack for the same reason.

Some triathletes have a reputation for being "squirly" in a pack I doubt this is as much about the position as it is experience in pack riding.

Do you like the full tri bikes or road bikes with aero bars??

That depends on what your going to use it for the most.  I have a roadie with aero bars. I would like a pure tri bike if I can justify/afford another one. I miss riding a pure roadie without my aero bars sometimes. If your main focus is triathlons and tri training, get a tri bike. If you just want to do allot of road riding, ride in groups allot or dabble in road racing get a road bike.
If I were buying a bike today and could just have 1 I would buy a road bike. If I could have as many as I wanted I would have 2 road bikes, a fixed gear a tandem a tri bike and an MTB.

I'm not sure you have seen bikes with an adjustable seat tube angle, maybe you are thinking about the saddle angle? You can adjust the nose of the saddle up or down a little bit.

I ride a road bike with clip on aero bars.  Lots of hilly riding in our area and a tri bike just doesn't make much sense for me.  My bike fit is a blend of tri/road bike.  Not the best of both worlds but sort of a compromise.  Personally, I go for comfort above everything else.

Go to your local bike shop and try out both tri and road bikes and see which one fits you better and feels better!

Quick access to the brakes and shifters...just a finger tip away in my case
There might be something to the center of gravity also. I "feel" further forward and perceive the handling to be slightly different on the A bars vs drops.

I've never ridden anything aero. I guess my question was if the main purpose of the A bars is less drag how much difference is there between the same bike w/ areo bars and being in the drops. I'm just curious if it's really worth the trade off of handling etc. I suppose it really depends on the course.

My memories of cycling history are vague but I recall an association between the downhill skiing position and bicycle aero bars. You will notice a difference while aero and research support the anecdotal claims. Whether it is worth it to you is a matter of preference.
