Welcome to the best group of beer loving athletes on BT!

NAME: James (or Mums)

STORY: Athlete in HS, recreational in college. Then metabolism hit me in my mid 20s and I realized I needed to do something. Got up to 275 at my heaviest. Did my first tri while in college, took a 8 year hiatus and did 2 in 2015. Planned for an IM this year, but a deployment has changed that. I am currently overseas, so triathlon training is out of the picture. No pools within 200 miles of here

FAMILY STATUS: Married 7 years to my wife Emily, and have 2 young boys, Marshall (3) and Owen (2)

CURRENT TRAINING: I signed up for the Air Force marathon out here, which will be my first marathon. Afghanistan is 5000ft altitude, quite a change for an Ohio guy. Also the whole threat of being shot while running makes this race interesting

2016 RACES: The Air Force marathon in September

The Plan for 2017: HIM in Chattanooga in May 17, IM in Chattanooga in Sept 17

BEER/WINE/BOOZE PREFERENCE: I love me some IPAs/Double IPAs. Favorite is Blind Pig and Pliny The Elder. Had to make a special trip out near SF for that one!

WEIGHT LOSS: 270 when I got out here, currently 243 (27 lbs). Shooting for 225

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD BDAS MEMBER: I love Beer, I love triathlons? Excited to meet you all

James

I have been reading posts but have not been active on here in a little bit. It was really rainy and grey here for the last two weeks, but we finally had some sun yesterday so I"m going to get focused on the training again. My glute has still been bothering me though so I'm not sure how much running I'm going to be able to do yet.

My sister was visiting this weekend so there was a lot of eating and drinking the past few days. I am in a detox now. The food was all amazing though! My sister doesn't come to town often so she decided to surprise our parents, so she flew in Thursday and left last night. Today is a rough one, but I have vball tonight and my boot camp tomorrow morning, then will try to do a run (Shack Track and Field) tomorrow evening. That should get me back into a groove hopefully!

Happy belated Mother's Day to all the moms out there! I honestly don't know how you do it. You guys were talking about how BaDAsS our group is, but I'm expecially impressed by those of you who have kids and still manage to get your training and races in! Way to take care of yourselves! It sets a great example for your kids, too!

I'm not going to be on a podium ever, or even top 3 in my AG. I don't have a rival I'm competing against. I'm not sponsored. I'm only doing this for me. There are other ways to get in shape, other ways I could do fewer workouts a week with. There are other ways to get the competition bug fix, you can do a road race at any distance on any weekend nearly year round. There are easier ways to get bragging rights to friends and family. They really don't understand why we would do this, or how difficult it really is. I don't know about you guys, I just do this for me. This is fun for me. The workout variety, the number of ways to compete against myself for improvements, the improvements I see in myself. "10,000 streams fan out before you like a river delta, each one promising the path of least resistance. Thing is, you're headed upstream."
John! I've been thinking a lot about this lately, mostly due to some negative comments I've received from my mother-in-law (a woman who gets out of breath walking across the kitchen) about how much time I spend working out. I absolutely agree with you. No matter what distance, no matter where they finish (or if they finish at all), no matter what the time, Triathletes are Badass. There is a dedication required that not many people have. Not just to the three sports, but to the mental aspect of competing against yourself. We are our own worst enemies in many cases. This sport takes both physical abilities AND mental toughness, the later being the more important element, by far.

Yeah, I get into this figh with my mother, who thinks that what I do is bad for me.

My company, and even more specifically my little part of it, has a culture of physical fitness and we've have a ton of triathletes.  Our CEO has done like 50 of them (and pretty well) and my director has done about a dozen IMs.  Pretty cool stuff to have those folks as role models AND they get it if I have to decompress during the day and go for a run.   :-)

Hey, everyone.  Work has been absolutely bat$h!t crazy the past few weeks.  I'm working on a project that has our whole team a hot mess.

Still being bothered by my knee.  Guessing patella tendonitis at this point.  I swim fine no  restrictions, bike up to like 80% FTP and walk hard on the treadmill, but no running.  Even my strength training routine doesn't bother it.  I dealt with a bout of this five years ago and it lasted quite a while; hopefully it'll resolve itself eventually.

Still catching up on the posts.  I see Gretchen is still a rockin' machine!!!  :-)

Hey everyone,

I'm finally back riding the bike outside. My endurance and top end have come down a little but my aerobic power (FTP) is still there. I'm not ready to race again, the bone is still broken so I can't handle too many bumps or jostling of the peloton quite yet. Another two weeks should do it. The last weekend of this month is the Killington Stage race in Vermont. Our team director is using that race to determine the guys he sends to Tour de Beauce the big UCI stage race here in Canada. So I'm making it a point to be ready for that.

Jenn is Killington anywhere near you?

Killington is about 2 hours south of me or so, maybe 1:45. I can't believe that Stage race is already happening! Time has flown (or we just haven't had much of a spring yet).
I'll ask my PT if he and his wife are going down this year for it! He came in first in Cat 3 a couple years ago but I can't remember if that was Killington or the one up here.
You'll probably see a guy named Bobby Bailey there (I think he's a Cat 1 one guy); he's very, very tall, dark hair. He lives around the corner from me (trying to sell me his Reynolds race wheels from last year...).
Keep me updated! I think that's Memorial Day weekend down here? (last weekend of May) - the other big one is on Labor Day weekend and the crit is right in Burlington.

Happy Mother's Day!
Nice weekend on the Cape - was rainy and 20 degrees colder than back in VT (what?!?!?!). hahaha. I did bring my bike and am happy I brought my trainer!! The roads have no shoulders on the Cape and I found the bike path crossed so many roads (where you had to stop for cars) that there would be no rhythm going on so I set up in the basement of the house my friends rented, had Ironman 2 on the TV and went to work for 2 hours before the wedding. The 5 hour drive down Friday and 5 hours back on Sunday plus the bike ride leaves me with an achy lower back but I've been stretching and will be back at it tomorrow.

I hit the NH state liquor outlet and picked up some extra Mother's Day presents for myself.

Tomorrow I've got a bike and a swim and an awesome trip to the DMV to renew my driver's license (so psyched! hahaha).
Weather is steadily improving this week and will be 73 and sunny on Thursday! woohoo! It does drop back down and rains Friday, but I'll take it!!!

I have a Corporate Cup Challenge race on Thursday evening but I'm in a bit of a dilemma. When I signed up for it with my colleagues I had no conflicts. My hubby's national budgeting meeting (in Indy) is all this week now and the kids group I coach at the school is Thursday (though there are 4 other coaches), and my now 9 year old has a baseball game that night. Do I.....bag the race, coach the kids (I think I might have a chance of doing this anyway), and take the son to baseball...and therefore cause my team to disqualify since I couldn't go... Or do I try to get someone to watch my 9 year old (10 year old will be on an overnight field trip to the Boston museum of science so he's taken care of) and go to the run? I feel badly either way...for my teammates since that's the first thing I signed up for; and guilty if my son misses his baseball game (he actually doesn't mind this too much though).

My birthday is Wednesday so maybe I race? hahaha I really don't know.

I do have to post this picture of my youngest (turned 9 the day before this picture)...no, it's not tri-related but it's my kid pitching in his very first game ever. He's only ever been coached on pitching by me (a fast-pitch softball pitcher - "that's the wrong way, Mommy"...) I didn't realize he had such a follow through until I took this picture. I'm always the one catching for him so I kind of have to pay attention to where the ball is going. hahaha Pardon the quality, I took it with my phone and it was zoomed in a bit.

First off great pic of your son pitching!

Can you find a sub for race? I completely understand never wanting to miss your kids activities..they grow up waaay to quickly!

You should double check to make sure everyone is still a go as there is usually a couple more in the weeds that will bail at the last moment.

Good luck!

I am envious of your work environment! People in my office look at me like I have a hole in my head, a tail and purple and green skin when I tell them I am going for a run in the morning...Chances of someone asking to come run, bike or swim with me are about the same as winning the lottery!

Hahaha, that would be awesome! He would totally wear a fake mustache!

Thwarted on my swim today - oldest woke up with a low grade fever. I did go to PT but now taking kiddo to doc's to rule out strep (he has a trip to Boston on Thursday/Friday and I want to rule strep out). I'll squirrel a run in after and do some static and dynamic exercises here at home.
Tomorrow morning I'll get up at o'dark to get my brick done and if he goes to school will get my swim in then.

Yeah, I'm leaning toward bagging on the Corporate Cup unfortunately. I mentioned to the leader he can wear both of our bibs for the numbers. (I'm the fastest one in our group and I am not very fast). Hahahaha.

Alan, I just talked to my PT about the Killington Stage race. He is not going this year but had some great beta on it if you're interested. Ironically he just separated his clavicle! Not as good a story as yours though - he was coaching 9 year old girls soccer!
He said if you make it up in this direction he'd do some hill climbing with you if you like.

But worse is my mom, every time I finish a race, she says to me very seriously: "this is great, so now you don´t NEED to run any more races"!!

That is a really cool pic - that is such an old school follow through.

Got a lot of the questions about "why do you do that" this weekend at my in-laws house. At work, we largely go about our days trying to avoid talking to one another at all, so no one really has any idea about anyone else's extra-curricular activities. I do notice, however, that usually when I get negative type comments about tri, it is usually from someone who gets out of breath walking into the kitchen (MIL!!!).

Another great day at Master's swim class. We did a fun set of 100s followed by decreasing amounts of rest and then followed by a 25 at max speed followed by increasing amounts of rest. It was tiring, but lots of fun. Pool is back to being set up at 25 yds (instead of 50m), which means little to anyone, except now I have some metric to measure progress on! I was nailing 1:52/100 today consistently. Already seeing improvements after just a month!

Had to get new tires for my bike yesterday. Holy heck--those were more expensive than I thought! Guess I shouldn't judge Gatorskins against what I saw at Target a couple of weeks ago, huh? Have to change them out this afternoon and then have an hour ride scheduled for later. Hoping the rain says away so I can do that outside!

I run on Continental GP4000 IIs; those bad boys are like $75 a pop - but I figure it's like once every two years so it's worth it.  I notice a definite speed advantage over the more "durable" tires like the Conti Sports or Gatorskins.

haha, good question - he was probably trying to make sure the SS and third basemen were paying attention (3rd graders and the 2nd baseman is a 4th grader).

So, woke up yesterday to 5" of water in my basement...ugh. It has been storming and raining pretty hard for the last few days. I spent all day yesterday draining the water, trying to dry out the basement, and unclogging floor drains. Fortunately, yesterday was my "rest day", so only a little ST and yoga on the schedule for me.

Coach was absent from master's class today (his daughter is graduating from med school). You know what they say, cat's away, mice will play. We had a lot of fun, mostly just doing sprints with long rest intervals. Oh, and the 10x100 kicking. I hate kicking!! As long as the water stays under control in the basement today, I'm off for a 4:15 ride this afternoon. I might have found a riding buddy in one of my student's husband. He is a great rider, although hasn't ridden in two years, so I have hopes that he will help me improve my technique and speed!

Next week I'm off traveling. Hoping to get in all my workouts, but will be staying in a retirement community with a friend, so I'm not entirely sure it will work out that way. I'm taking my gear, bike, and best intentions with me. I'm glad, though, that it is a recovery week.

Good luck to our racers this weekend!!! And...try to stay out of trouble on this Friday the 13th with a full moon!

Had a great week of training. Just need to keep the ship going forward consistently.

A bonus this week. A gal my wife and I know has  pro deal discount with a certain bike/run/triathlon clothing manufacturer. We are ordering some gear at 60% off.

We are buying 2 pairs of tri shorts, a cycling coat and cycling knickers--$345 regular price for $145!! this includes shipping and taxes! (no the knickers are not for me... :-) )
