Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() No racing for me this weekend - next race is an Oly on July 19. I got out at noon today and ran for about an hour. It was sunny, 88 F and kind of humid. I took it slow and decided to keep my heart rate around 140 which is the top of my zone 2. If I had gone any faster, I'm pretty sure I would have had to cut the run short. Good acclimation run. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It's been a very busy week without much training. My summer class is winding down so I should be free to train when I'm not working now. I raced a sprint tri on Weds which was very interesting. I haven't made the RR yet but I'll post it when I do. The swim felt terribly long and slow. Idk what happened there. The bike felt awesome as I really pushed the envelope and tried to stay right around FTP(for 36mins). The run was surprisingly slow. I'm not sure if it was because I went hard on the bike or because my stomach was sloshy. I suspect a little of both. I went approx 1:18 for the standard distance sprint course. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Camp Lutherhaven 5k race is under my belt. I enjoyed but didn't push real hard because......well I didn't feel like it. It was a very challenging course with a lot of short hills and a couple of longer steeper ones thrown in there to try to cripple me. 17 overall, 2 AG from a filed of 133. RR later. Oh yeah, time: 22:48 |

![]() Solid races Carl and Dirk My ride ended up being a little short because the group is planning to go long tomorrow. Still got in 62 miles today...70 is planned for tomorrow. So I guess it comes out the same...my original plan was to go 85 today and 45 tomorrow. Felt really good today. I got lots of rest yesterday...and even though the group was supposed to be an easy pace today, I got out in front and hammered a couple of times. I suppose I'll pay for it tomorrow...but all the better. If it doesn't hurt...it's not doing anything... ![]() |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good races! Carl- I look forward to reading your RR Dirk- Wow, that's your 5k time when you're NOT going all out. That time looks awesome to me!Sorry work has sucked for you lately. I know how it can get sometimes. I always say if I didn't have this annoying job, I could really get some traning done...But then again, I wouldn't be able to pay our bills either ![]() J- Awesome mileage on the bike. My longest ride so far has been 30 miles, the distances you're riding are currently unimaginable to me, but maybe some day. Great job getting in all the training. I did an OWS today with my masters group. I think I'm gonna have to get rid of the wetsuit soon. I was burning up and I knew it was too hot but it's kinda like a security thing for me. Like having on floaties in the pool for a little kid. But I wasn't the only one. Half the group still had their suits. Next OWS I'm going without the suit though on the chance that my upcoming tri in CA might not allow them, so I'll be prepared. |

Great job getting in all the training. Finding a good group (or groups) or training partner (or partners) is the key. If I was training solo, there's no way I build up as quickly as I have. But you just go out on a ride...the group says they're going 40 miles...and you're like...okay...I have only gone 28 before...but what the heck. You hang on for dear life, but at the end of the ride...you're like..."wow...I did it". You show up again the next week...and it gets a little easier...until the group says they're going farther...LOL |

I also needed a cholesterol screening to check my usually high levels. During the visit my wife aired her concerns to the doc (which he thought was unrealistic) and ordered a EKG. Nothing was found, which of coarse is good, but I found a solid resting HR in the process. I was excited to learn my RHR is 46. I thought that was funny, that it is so low. |

Awesome run Dirk And that's a really low RHR. I think mine has dipped into the 40's a bit right after waking up in the morning. But now way would it be that low in the middle of the day at the doctors office. Mine is mid to high 50's by the time my day has started. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I kinda know what you mean. I planned a 40 mile ride this afternoon but there were some pop up storms that were moving through that kept me from hitting the road. It took me 20 minutes to talk myself into getting on the trainer. I had forgotten how much I hate that thing until tonight. I would not have minded riding in the rain but the downpour and lightning might have been a bad idea. I think this week should be much better for me training wise than last week. I heard the weather report and it is supposed to be nice all week. No storm threats for now. I am ready to start pounding again after missing last week. I may start tring to get a 3rd swim in every week since we have a family membership to a pool. This would be done time permitting. |

![]() Had a good ride today. My legs were a little toasted from going hard yesterday, but I still managed well. It was a little weird though at the end of the ride when we were washing up. The ride leader kind of went off at a couple of guys in the group who are training for a race, basically telling them they are training too hard, and peaking too early. Which may be true, but his tone was a bit harsh. He means well, and is only trying to make them better...but it was the first time I didn't feel comfortable in the group setting. He basically told them they were setting themselves up for a horrible race. But in all seriousness...I suppose he's right. The race is only 36 miles...but involves 10k feet of climbing. Also known as cycle to the sun. You can't hide in a pace line in this race...it's constant pedal pressure the whole way. http://www.cycletothesun.net/ |

I've been in situations before where I've seen others get talked to harshly and it's akward at best. Hopefully those guys got the leader's point (even if it's delivery was not done respectfully) and have not lost motivation. I have some interesting news. My dad has decided to do a triathlon. I don't know the details about when, where, or what distance yet. He used to do oly distance ones all the time when I was a kid. He had 3 guys who he trained with. Anyhow, he got an injury that required surgery and around the same time one of the other guys also got a major injury and another moved out of state. So that's when he stopped doing tris. Recently, he had another surgery because he had developed arthritis in his hip. Anyhow, he's doing better now and says he wants to start training again. I will keep you posted about what ends up happenning. His last tri was 16 years ago, so I'll be interested to see what he decides to do. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good stuff on everyone's races and training. Sorry I'm giving such a generic response, I was at the beach all weekend and just catching up this morning while trying to get some work done. Thanks for the HIM advice too. I've got zero confidence in my running right now, especially after a long bike (see Friday's workout...not good stuff). haha, and you guys were probably right, I don't think I couldn't "go for it" either...we'll see how it works out following Newbz's advice. |

I need to run more often. last couple weeks fell of the consistent train. I'm definitely back at it this week. Heading down to VA beach this week for work. Tuesday thru Friday morning. Should get some running in the heat in, just to see how I am going to do with those conditions. That's awesome that your dad is getting back into it. I wish I could motivate my parents to be that active. |

I hope I can hang for a long time in this sport. It sure is satisfying to complete this training and see some success in a race. But the biggest thing for me is that this has really helped get my cholesterol under control and my overall health has become much better. I hope your dad continues to be healthy enough to enjoy the sport. I had a really good swim tonight. It's amazing how a good weekend off with good rest can make everything much better in the realm of training. At times tonight I felt really smooth in the water.....smooth and strong. It was really refreshing to enjoy tonight after last weeks struggles. I ran a 5k right after the swim too. That felt nice as well. After the first half mile I began to settle into a nice groove and just kind of glide over the road. After the run I looked at my avg. HR and was shocked to see it was in the upper 150's. The way I felt on the road was so good, I thought it should have been in the low 140's. I guess it all the good livin I'm doin'. Right?!?! |

His muscles and joints are going to take a while to get used to the stress. I started training in 2008 and I held off on doing my first Oly until 2009. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi All! Back from Finland. Actually got back Saturday, but have been swamped with work. It sounds like everyones training is going awesome! - great motivation for me as I now have less than 2 weeks til my first tri. Yeah - and all those workouts I planned while on vacation so didn't happen (2 runs and 3 longer hikes)! Also, my bike is in the shop now so have been reduced to the stationary bike at the gym. I will try to get caught up on race reports soon, but congrats to all who have raced in the last few weeks! |

You def have a lot of reading to do to catch up on anything going on here. Good luck getting back into the swing of training and prep for your tri. I got a decent ride in last night. I went 32 miles for my midweek ride, which is unusual but I would like it to become the norm. Anyway on my ride I was trying to figure out how to get some power into my legs. So my question is: Should try to add a shorter ride of 5-10 miles of strictly hammering on the big ring at the top of the cogs to make me have to constantly apply some serious hammering? Or should I plan some mid-route hammering to develop hardcore power? I would like to keep most of my routes the same length I am currently doing them and the middle hammering makes me wonder about having anything left for the rest of the ride. Just looking for thoughts. BTW, I am going to be doing a sprint relay on July 17. I don't know what leg I will be doing and since I only have one tri under my belt I am not sure how this will even work. It sounds like fun so I'll just see what happens. |
