Got out for a 75 minute run (12.5 km for me) yesterday - tough with the 85-90% humidity.   I'm having second thoughts about doing the HIM in Sept and may opt for another Oly instead.   Although I can probably build enough of a base to get through the HIM, I think the right thing is to take another year to build.

14 mile run this morning before work.  It felt great but I developed massive blisters on both of my large toes.  I won't get in any training tomorrow because I'll be working all day.

Dan,  I know what you mean about the humidity.  Those runs suck to try to work through but when your done you feel really good because you were able to conquer another demon so to speak.  The weather for me today wasn't my demon.  I think it is some stuff catching up to me.  I struggled with my 9 mile run this morning and my swim tonight.  I had to dial them both back a notch to feel like I would be able to get through them.  Most of the week I felt good, until today.  I guess that's the nature of training though......good days, bad days.

Edit:  Carl,  I hate when work gets so busy that training has to take a big back seat.  I am just now learning to get past some of the frustrations of missing my training sessions.  I think since I completed my first oly and did pretty decent that I must have been doing something right even while missing stuff.  Now I have some confidence to get through a lot more with less (at times) when I have to work it that way.

Felt great on yesterday's ride.  Today...I'm opting for a 45 mile ride at an easier pace.

Have a great 4th everyone

Thanks Dirk.  In retrospect, I guess the average humidity for the whole week was 80% or higher.  I have to look at the positive side and recognize that my up coming races may very well have similar weather conditions.    I dialed it back a little yesterday and today too and am feeling a little more positive.   A nice cold beer and a couple of glasses of wine may have something to do with that too.

Dan, I had my turn in the oven today.  But this one's on me.  Not so much on mother nature.  Here is a partial post from my log.
"Well I guess this run will teach me to stay up until 1AM, get up at 9 AM, wait 2 hrs to run in the scorching heat.
My lap times are horrendous! My first 2 miles were on target but after that everything fell completely apart! Right at 2.3 miles I could feel I was running to hard for the heat and mile 3 shows how bad it was. From 7:58 miles to 8:50, that's ridiculous!"

This one hurt me some.  I am sure that the ride yesterday in similar temperatures added to the problems today but I still should have been a little more conscientious about what kind of pace I was running.  It was pretty retarded of me to consider trying to pull this off.  Oh well, lesson learned (probably not) and I will not do it again (for another few weeks).  I have a swim scheduled for later today that I need to really get some solid work in. With my tri relay comin up in about 2 weeks I really want to crush the swim since I won't have anything else to try to pull off that day.

I had a tough bike ride today. It was the same route I did last week (30 miles), and I was looking to beat my time. But I was so tired. I've been running a lot this week and my legs just felt dead before I even started. Finished a whole 10 mins later than last time. Haha...so much for beating my old time. My friend I bike with was pretty nice, saying there was a head wind, it was hot, etc. But, no, this one was all me. Might have to take it easy this week with pace & distances. Sure don't wanna feel this way for my tri next weekend.

I felt pretty dead today too.  Had a great 50 minute run yesterday. Today - however I could only manage 38 minutes at a 12 minute pace.  Way slow and HR was about 10 bpm higher than I wanted.  Doing a BRIC tomorrow (probably a 15 mile ride followed by a 2 mile run) - last one before my race on Sunday.  Won't officially start tapering til about Thursday.

It must have been that kind of day for everyone.  After my run this morning I wasn't feeling like anything else.  About all I was wanting to do was sleep (which I did none of).  I did work a swim in and was glad I did.  I had some reasonable success in the pool today after what seems like weeks of feeling like an anchor in the water.  I finally feel like I got some good time in there.  I felt really good for the main set........well until a little more than halfway though.  Then the set worked on me hard.  But that's what is supposed to happen.  I was glad I went and more happy I could finish as well as I did.

all,

looks like a hard day all around.

run tonight almost killed me as well. been around 100 here and looking to stay t hat way for at least a week.

this heat is killer and will slow everyone down a lot. make sure you are staying hydrated and dial back intensity as needed with it. its hard and WILL slow you down, just be careful out there and make adjustments as needed.

Luckily for me it's still only 4:15 pm here.  I was supposed to go on a 60ish mile ride this morning...but my body was having none of that.  Didn't get too much sleep over the weekend, so I just slept in.

Going for a recovery ride...just hoping to flush out the toxins in the legs.

Anyone see that leg compressor thingy that they showed during the TdF coverage today?  It was like two giant air casts for your legs to help riders recover.  Looks like the $10k version of compression wear.

I did another run today with the humidity around 85%.   I decided to let my heart rate max in the low end of zone 3 and back off on the pace to keep it from going higher.   That strategy seems to work well for me.

I feel for all of you suffering in the  heat - make sure you drink lots of h20!  Luckily, a cool front came in on Sunday and it has been in the 70's (65 degrees right now).  Of course,  6 weeks ago I was complaining about snow!

I had an awesome BRIC today.  It would have been even better if there hadn't been a strong headwind on the back ride back. For some reason, it seems I run faster after biking. Is it b/c I can't feel my legs?  Anyways my pace is about 30 seconds per mile faster.

May take tomorrow off - or just go easy on the bike trainer b/c I have the kids aaaaallllll daaaayyyy.

Robin- Awesome job and good luck this weekend! Haha...I know how it is. I've been home with my 3 kids all day since the beginning of June (summer break- I teach). I usually end up taking a nap with them at 2pm, I'm so exhausted.

Ok- question. Looking for everyone's more experienced opinions. My friend who I bike with wants me to do a century with him in Oct. I think it's a stretch to say the least, but he's pretty confident I could do it. I'm not looking to be competitive (haha, when I'm I ever?) just finish. The longest distance I've gone so far is 30 miles, but I don't feel bad afterwards, I think I could go farther. But 100 miles? The race has the option of doing 50 miles or 30 miles, so either way I'll do it, just a question of how far.
I'm doing a sprint tri in Sept & one in Oct (although I could opt out of the Oct tri in favor of the century and focus on the bike exculsively for 5 weeks) and a HM in Dec. Also, my training time will be reduced when work starts up again in late Aug. Is the century a good idea? Am I being delusional?

Hey all, finally back home from being at work and up in VT for some family time.  Got a fair amount of workouts in, but still a lax week all around.  Did my first full 1.2 miles across the lake this morning.  Did it in about 35 minutes.  It was nice and calm and a pretty cool temperature so it felt great.  Need to work on sighting as I was sort of "all over the place" as my aunt said from our boat.  It was about 95 degrees all weekend and I'm definitely not used to that kind of heat.  Got in a run, a bike and a couple swims, that's it.  Biking felt like a heater was just being blown on me the entire time!

Looks like everyone else is feeling the heat.  I have to do one long run before this weekend I think I should do it tomorrow as I have a race on Saturday and want my legs fresh by then.  I think I'll get up at 5 and get it over with before it gets hot again.

JP, I haven't done a century before, but it looks to me like you have the time to get your training up there.  It's a good amount of dedication to put those miles in.  You have that dedication.  But do you want to do it?

A century isn't as bad as it sounds.

I did a metrice century in April (62 miles) and it was my longest ride ever at that point.  And that ride was WAY EASIER than the 60 mile rides I go on now.  The reason being is that the pace is generally much more relaxed and you get to rest at the aid stations.  The aid stations are not like in an IM where you get handed bottles while riding.  You actually pull into a parking lot or something where you get off your bike and walk to the tents handing out cookies, bananas, gatorade, etc.  You take as long a rest as you need, then you carry on.  Lots of people were taking 10-15 minute breaks.  Heck...some people go to starbucks or stop to buy lunch.

There is also no pressure when it comes to cutting the route short.  Lots of people turn around whenever the feel like it.  It's not like you have to stick to the 30, 50, or 100 mile routes.  Some people don't even start at the starting line...they just leave home and join the route at mile 20...then go home after mile 80.

If you're looking to have a fun time on your bike...I would absolutely do it.

Jonathan- My cousins used to live in Burlington, VT & I used to visit them a couple times a year. I love VT (just not in the winter - unless I'm skiing) What part of VT were you in? Swim sounded great (Lake Champlain?). Good luck this weekend & thanks for the vote of confidence.

J- Good to know the century is a relaxed event. I know nothing about it & didn't know if there were cut off times, etc. If I can stop at Starbucks, then sure I'll do it ...but seriously if it relaxed like that maybe I'll just go out & see how far I can go.

the talk about eh century ride reminds me that I was asked to do the "Hilly Hundred" in southern Indiana sometime.  There was no target to do it, just a few of us were talking about doing sometime.  Its in the fall here and I will be in full marathon training at that point, so its no deal for me.

My target for this year on the bike is probably going to be 60-ish miles for my long rides.  I will only use it as a solid cross training activity for running after my Aug. 1 tri.  I would like for my weekly total on the bike to be about 90-100 miles befire the weather starts to suck again.

I had the day off today.  I was kind of needing it, I think.  I added a 3rd ride last week to bring my total to 97 miles, including a 25 mile trainer ride.  Hmm?  I didn't even think about how many miles I actually did last week until just now.

Got in a nice set of intervals today.

I tried to go longer...about 18 minutes on, 6 minutes off.  And I felt great.  The time just flew by and I was done before I even knew it.  I decided to throw in a 10 minute all out effort (or whatever I had left) and pushed almost 280 watts.

nice job on the intervals, i have an 8 mile time trial coming up and may try and borrow a friends PT for it, would love to see some unmbers for this year!

agreed with the others, a century is normally a pretty relaxed event (or is for most of the poeple there). keep riding and making the longer ride longer and you'll have a blast.

Jamie and I had a great run this morning. After having a short, not-so-spectacular run Tues, this was just what I needed before my tri. We both felt energized this morning and our normal route just didn't seem as hard. The landmarks seemed to come up faster than they usually do. It actually seemed shorter to me, but we did our longest run yet at 5 miles with only 1 short walking break half way through.

I've got a master's swim tonight and then I'm done until my tri on Sunday. We're going to San Diego Fri night with just the boys. We're leaving the baby with a family friend to make the trip a little easier on everyone. I'm sure we'll be walking a ton on Saturday. I made sure to get a hotel with a pool, so hopefully the boys will have something to do Sunday morning while I'm doing my race. My husband is going to stay at the hotel with them while I do my race. Although I'm a little bummed no one will be watching me, I don't want to make everyone have to get up super early (we'll only have one car) and leave my husband with nothing to do with 2 preschoolers for 2 hours. I figure I'll be more relaxed this way anyhow.

You might check the tri website.  The tri I did had a few things for some of the kids to do while one of the parents were competing.  My wife came to my first race and I think she enjoyed it almost as much as I did. She even coached me after the race to not be "dilly dallying" in T1.  I would have missed her being there for my race because she is into watching me or our daughters compete in various sports.

Enjoy your race and good luck.
