Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks Dan! Dirk- Good idea, I'll check the website. See what my husband wants to do. He and my oldest son watched my 1st race which was local. I left early and he came later in the other car (left the younger 2 with sitter at home). It was cool. He's a great guy, but he gets a little overwhelmed taking care of all the kids ![]() At my last tri, I saw a bunch of kids helping out as volunteers. I'm thinking of volunteering at another local tri and seeing if my oldest (who will be 5) could help with something like passing out water. I'm sure in a few years taking all the kids to the race will be no problem. I remember watching my dad's races. It was fun. Edited by jpbis26 2010-07-08 6:07 PM |

Don't worry about the kids - they will do fine. And yes, it does get easier. My husband is taking the kids (5&7) to cheer me on on Sunday (which actually can be a little embarasing as they shout "go mommy" at the top of their lungs.) Lucky for hubby though, there is a playground only a few feet from transition. Drove my bike route yesterday and it shouldn't be a problem - the route parallels the highway and there are a few short steep hills where the road goes up at on/off ramps of the highway. Was able to get an hour ride in today and a lot of it on the aero bars - starting to get easier. Good luck to everyone else racing this weekend! Look forward to hearing the reports. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am trying to change my work out schedule so I can have an easier Sunday. I have been doing my long runs on Saturday and long rides on Sunday, but it makes my Sunday's kind of hectic. Today I ran my long run (10 miles) and I will do my long ride tomorrow (42 miles). My run today had to be later than I was planning because I had a dentist appointment I didn't realize was today and it was pretty tough because of the humidity. it was the slowest long run I have ever had (8:58 miles). I hated it but I made it through by sheer will. I suppose my ride last night could have had something to do with it but I don't know. I figured the first week of the new schedule would be a little tougher but I was hoping it wouldn't have been this tough. Next Friday I will be able to get out on the road in the early morning and I won't have to battle quite as hard. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() good luck to everyone racing this weekend. I did a local club time trial this morning, my RR (copied from the main forum): So i actually made it up this week to do the free time trial!! After a hard longer run yesterday and the humidity, i wanted to just get in a solid workout and see how things felt in a short hard effort like this. As a bonus i got to ride with a powertap wheel for this so i have some numbers to put to the TT. I got in a decent warm up, rode down from home and then rode the course once for a total of about 55 min. included in that were a few spin ups and then 3x3min, first around tempo pace, the next two around threshold. the course is a smooth out and back, with a light rise at each end, so you have a quick down hill after the start and after the turn around, and a slight uphill at the run and finish. I started in 12th place and quickly got up to speed and settled into my pace. The goal was to keep it smooth till the boathouses and then pick it up (approx 1:30 in). from there i picked it up two gears and started really pushing. By the turn around i was in a world of hurt and started really seeing the diff in my training vs what something ilke this would require to really race well. The way back was a lot of me hating my self for waking up, and trying to void the geese wandering over the closed road (which is awesome btw). Bike and clothing were full training setup, training wheels and tires, bike jersey with stuff in pockets, regular helmet. I have no idea where i stacked up overall, didn't stick around that long, but there were a few cyclists that looked very fast out there. I came through in 18:31 for the 8.35 miles. Numbers from the PT: Ave watts: 322 peak1 min power: 343 peak5 min power: 329 Ave speed: 27.3mph distance: 8.35mi Time: 18:31 this was not the most fun experiance ever and i have a lot of respect for the poeple that do this all the time. that was one of the most painful things i've done on a bike. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It official, I have signed up for my second oly tri for the season on Aug 1. This will likely be my last one for the year seeing as I want to concentrate on my marathon training. I hope to cut some time for this one and I know I should be able to do it if nowhere else besides the transition areas. This event will be much larger than my first one. There are supposed to be around 1200 athletes competing in the 3 events. Last year was a sell out. There will be 3 events; sprint tri, oly tri and short du. In last years oly there were 439 competitors, so I should have plenty of competition. Looking at last years results, I would have placed 44th overall if I kept the same time I had at my first tri. 2008 results would have put me at 76th. Obviously I will have to put my A game on to place well. We'll see how it goes??? |

![]() Awesome job David...I'm not sure what's worse... a 40k TT or a 8 mile TT...both seem to be quite painful. I got through my 75 mile ride this morning quite well. It was my longest solo ride to date...and it was super windy today...which made it even tougher. Still managed to average about 17 mph, which is not bad considering the amount of red lights I hit. I have a 65 mile group ride tomorrow with some hill repeats thrown in there...so that should be fun. Hopefully I won't be hurting too bad tomorrow morning. |

![]() Got through my ride today quite well...actually, it was awesome. Got in 69 miles with some pretty good hill climbing. I also did a bit more pulling up front during the course of the ride and made some big impressions with the faster guys of the group. So I got 143.5 miles in this weekend. |

So I got 143.5 miles in this weekend. Your mileage every weekend amazes me. In a year or two I may begin to look toward a HIM but right now my mileage is only about 75 a week. You're doing almost twice my weekly mileage in a couple of days. Question to everybody: I will intentionally try to be short to allow as much input as possible. I have 2 more tri events scheduled for the season and then the Marine Corps Marathon. This will be my A race for the year! I have been trying to get this done for 2 years and the injury that took me out last year is not an issue now. I have the tri training to than k for that. ---- My question is, where do I go with my training to do my best at a BQ for the marathon? I have considered a number of things. 1. Do I back off on my tri training? 2.) Do I continue with tri training for the cross training benefits. I will leave the rest opened for discussion. I want to leave as much room for advice/discussion as possible. All advice and questions are relevant. Thanks in advance. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi everyone, Just got back from CA. Had a great vacation with the kids and a great tri. I improved a lot from my last one. I was able to run the entire 5K this time and keep a better pace on the bike. My only regret is that I could have been more aggresive on the swim. I will not know the split times until Weds morning, so I'm gonna hold off on the RR until then. But the website did post my official overall time. 2hrs 4mins and I was 5th in the Athena catagory. I know the races were 2 different courses & 2 different distances, but this time is a big improvement for me. To give you an idea. May's overall time 2hrs 32mins (800M/30K/5K) Today's overall time 2hrs 4mins (1000M/25K/5K) Can wait to see the splits to really see how it all broke down. Hope everyone who raced this weekend had a great race and that everyone else had a good weekend! |

So if I were you, I would find a BQ marathon training plan and work in swimming and biking where possible. If that means I can only swim and bike once a week, and my tri performances will suffer, than so be it...the goal is the "A" race. Not sure if that's how you view things though. |

Thanks J, that's pretty much how I view things too. But I don't want to lose some of the ability I have gained during this tri training. I guess that is my fear. I had a good swim last night where I was able to hold 1:35 for 10 out of the 12 100's on a :15 rest and judging from some of the comments from others on BT, that's pretty fast. Thats the type of effort I don't want to lose. Still looking for all input. I want as much perspective as possible from my peers. After all you guys are basically my coaches. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() i'd say then focus on the tri and run a bit more than normal (maybe back off the bike a tad or not). come aug start hitting the run volumes. thats still 12 weeks till the marathon up the run volume a bit now if you can and then start getting the bigger volume/long runs in after the tri. or find a marathon program you like, and bike/swim when you can. |

I wanted to finish under an hour and a half, but I guess I can work toward it. Finished 3rd in the Athena category - not sure about my age division or my splits as the final results are not yet available. Will get my race report finished once the results come in - which I hope is soon, cause I am itching to find out. |
