Oh yes, sprints hurt, if done at the right intensity.  Funny thing about me, we were doing sets of 200's, then 100's then 50's.  It was like a pyramid workout.  On the 200's I was coming in at around 3:00, then on 100's I was coming in at around 1:30, then at 0:45 on the 50's, my swim instructor said "Reece, you have one speed!"

It is best to spread peanut butter evenly Smile

Surprised Gasp. This has Yanti written all over it. You just had to drag this back into the gutter, didn't you. Or wait, did I just drag it down? No, it was you.

Honey, we haven't even gotten to eating the peanut butter yet ...

For the fact that I am OCD about absolutely nothing (excepting my posts in Tri Talk), I will have a conniption fit if the peanut butter isn't spread evenly, right to the very corners and edges across the whole piece of bread.

As long as it's spread on nice and thick, I'm a happy camper. Bonus if it's crunchy

I love you. *sticky peanut butter {MELON PRESS}*

CRUNCHY {MELON PRESS}

That put a big goofy grin all over my face

Hm. If your 5K pace becomes your marathon pace, then your swim pace will automatically be (scribbling, carry the four, punch the calculator, throw the frog) ... 1:22.22/100. Yards, not meters.

It does not count if you are into that type of asphyxiation but I'm pretty sure I could squeeze a lot of O2 outta you with a melon press alone. People ask for supplemental oxygen or a snorkel all the time.

Awesome afternoon for the manatees, although i'm just a voyeur apparently.

I have no idea what I do on my swim but my elbow has started to bother, slight pain, me on some of my harder/longer workouts, pool workouts get your mind out of the gutter, thoughts?  I think I need to make Sheila's book my next no idea about form I just go...

Where exactly on or in the elbow? Both arms or one (which, and if so, what handed-ness are you?) What kind of pain (stabbing, burning, just feels like a sore muscle, etc.)? I'm going to go look at your logs to see if you've recently ramped up swim intensity or distance.

Does the pain last past the swim? Does it occur at any other time? Have you been doing any kind of extra work with your arm/s (yard, construction, car, lifting, moving, throwing a ball), including repetitive motions like lots of extra mouse clicking?

In the elbow my left, I am left side dominant, stabing ache sort of?  Ugh.. yeah my logs suck right now just finding the mojo...  Nothing really on the extra work side

Okay ... is it that your logging sucks and you've actually been swimming more than that, or that by longer/harder workouts you mean the one 40-ish minute workout you've done recently?

That one Foot in mouth  I felt it a little on that one but I was feeling it fairly regularly when I was swimming on a regular basis, 2-3 x week.

Same here!  When Coach Johnny says we are going to do 25m sprints, I just smile because that's the same speed as doing a 200m set for me.  I have one speed, pretty darned slow.

Most of the sets I can bust up the speed but by the end I'm back to my avg speed... Guess I need more time in the pool. Thanks for the permission salty! Yeah it was pretty hot but I did the work out as prescribed

Thanks for fixing my link, Kirk!

I had posted it, then ran off on my long bike ride (30 miles, 1 hour 58 minutes)---and then I came back and found out there's going to be a Spartan race here in Sacramento!!! YES!!!! AND, its in November, so I can do schedule it! The one minor weird bit....its a Spartan Beast race, which means, it is a 13 mile courseSurprised--with 20+ obstacles! Wow--I wasn't planning on a half-mary til 2013; oh well, nothing like a new race to up the training factor!

I CAN'T WAIT!!!

I'm kinda looking forward to this, just in case you can't tell....Woo-hoo!!! It will mean 3 obstacle races this year! Too much fun! (I hope.Laughing)

I've done 2 Spartan races - they were 9+ miles each, so not the Beast; but really fun and hard.  I was sore in places i don't think i've ever been sore before!  You'll have a blast.

The only obstacle/mud runs I have done (2 of them)--one was a 5k, and the other was about 5-ish miles (orienteering was involved..I took some odd routes..)--They were tough, but so much fun! I was also pretty sore in weird places, but I liked the fact that I could TEAR through the obstacles, especially finding out I could do MUCH more than I thought in some cases!

The farthest I have run in a race ever has been a 10k, so I guess I'd better start working harder on my running!

I swear, I am really feeling like I could bounce off walls right now--I am so happy to see another obstacle race! (yes, I know, I am a major goofball...I am okay with that...)

With the spartan race, if u can't do an obstacle - and u only get one chance to complete it properly- you have to do 30 burpees-

Just got this a few minutes ago.  Sprint distance swim workout idea on USAT website.  I'm not a big fan of a workout of mostly 25's and 50's but I trust the author know more than I.

http://www.usatriathlon.org/about-multisport/multisport-zone/multisport-lab/articles/sprint-swim-workouts-072412.aspx

Not so much sprint distance swim workouts per se, but actual speed (fast or sprinting) workouts (for several purposes outlined in the article) appropriate for preparing athletes to go faster in sprint and international distance triathlons.

I'm not a big fan of 25/50s workouts either, but not because they don't work for the purposes stated. It's because they're HARD and they SUCK and they make me want to CRAP AND PUKE at the same time ... and I can swim long, easy sets all day at a pace that's perfectly acceptable for long-course triathlon or marathon swimming.

The bottom line is that to swim fast, you gotta swim fast. And in swimming, unlike running, you can do a whole lot of that a whole lot earlier.

I'm 50/50 on his argument that the main benefit for newer swimmers is identification and correction of stroke deficiencies. It works for some and not for others. Slapping a pair of fins on to make you go fast will serve the same purpose.

Maybe that's my problem. Yesterday and today's swim workouts included 25m sprints. I have had to take long naps each day, and when I wake up, I feel like someone hit me over the head with a 2x4. After reading the article, I think maybe I wasn't resting enough. I was "resting" by doing 25m of catch up -- well kind of. Oh, I can't think or type. 2x4 to the head. You can look at my logs.

Asalzwed - 2012-07-24 4:12 PM Ha, so Yanti and I had been discussing "speed" and how it's a relative term (we also deemed wellness in this category, right Yanti Wink) but I was at a birthday party with some friends last night and a couple of the girls were swimmers in college and whatnot and they were talking about their times. HOLY Surprised

No kidding. We have a collegiate swimmer home with her parents this summer, and she's been at the pool when I have a few times (Notice I didn't say or even slightly imply that we were "swimming together") I know I'm slow, but still. Lapping me doesn't even describe what she was doing. Her dad and mom are both former college swimmers and college swim coaches, and the dad, especially, was really giving her h*ll about going faster and nonsense. Seriously? Whatever.

It is best to spread peanut butter evenly Smile

Fuggin' hilarious. That's exactly what happened last week when I was doing an alternating sprint/easy set with the blond piglet, and we even went down to 25s.

Also, it's completely immaterial what strokes, intensity, paces, sets, rest intervals or combos of swim/pull/kick I do ... every single workout averages out to 2:00/100. (Doesn't even matter what length POOL I'm in ... 25yd, 25m, 50m! One time I was working out in a 30m pool, uneven stone/brick walls made flip turns impossible ... exact same result!)

Okay, maybe not if the workout were, say, 20x200 fly. But even I'm not crazy enough to do that.

Now what I want is to be able to do this working backwards. In all disciplines. I'd be a pretty happy camper if I could run a marathon at 5K pace or swim 3 miles at 25m pace. Smile Is that so much to ask?

Not at all. It just takes forever (and a lot of puke) to end up doing races in such a short period of time. How old are you, again?

Well, as a matter of fact I think I will be running marathons at my current 5K pace. Maybe innn 3.5 years? But doesn't that make it my marathon pace? And what then will my 5K pace be?

And how does this all translate into my swim pace, eh? What about that?

Is it in poor taste to start a sentence with and? That's the question here!

Totally legal, and I'm paid to know. Smile

Asalzwed - 2012-07-25 5:51 AM I apologize Manatees. Work is stressing me out so I need to come in here and be ridiculous...might be a long week. Brace yourselves.

I'm on a snarkfest in every area of my life right now, so there you go. It's preventing me from strangling people.

The Yanti and Salty Ridiculo-Snarky Manatees ...

Well, you can tell what kind of mood I've been in because I was snarky to GatorDeb in TT. I put a smiley face at the end of it, so that made it all okay. I should have put in a picture of a kitty. Here.

Smiling kitty

Well good news from the UK - Grant Siedle a guy I'm acquainted with from squad has embarked on his English Channel crossing - it's 3am there I can only imagine how terrifying it must be seeing blackness all around and knowing you'll be in there for so long.  The crossing is 33km at its shortest point but the tide and currents can make it longer, another guy did it a couple of years ago and did 60km!  The slower you are the longer it becomes.  Grant is a gun so should be okay.

I am so excited.  Another friend Paul Hoffmann starts his challenge tomorrow, and Robbie from my slow lane goes next week.  Wow.  I am awestruck by their guts and determination and know I would NEVER do it.

Never say NEVER. It has a weird way of becoming your destiny.

That said, I'm NEVER going to swim the Channel either. Too bloody cold.

Cheering for your swim mates!!!

OMG that human-toothed cat was sooooo creepy! So much so I had to delete it so it wouldn't keep showing up in the thread!
