What did you learn in the proceess? Any insights into added reach/extension.....or how to position your hand/arm on the catch and pull......or how to really PUSH that water back? Those are the sorts of things I'm looking for with my own paddle work. The paddles I was taling about are indeed Zura --- Zura Vortex, to be specific. they come intwo sizes, and I got the smaller ones whenever that was, probably '02, maybe '01. They are the ones recommended for "novice" swimmers, which is what I conseidered myself back then. I wonder what the larger model would feel like......... (Those ellipses there are to indicate temptation, such as odering a pair of the larger ones asap!) |

I did not know there was a variety of socks. I have been wearing Hanes Cotton low socks. Well when I went to get my shoes the guy told me I need to wear wiker way socks. I wore a pear or acisis features and man those things felt great, but they did not have my size. I will look to get some of those. Im really proud of everyone and their races. Yall are doing great with the running and I cant wait till the day I an run the times and distance yall are running. Hats off to all of you. Went swimming today and did 1000 yards. My bilateral breathing is doing great, I only took in a little water twice when I went up for air. Yeah me. It was funny the guy next to me I guess was trying to show off. At first he was doing his own thing and then I noticed he would wait for me to swim my lap and then he would go, of course he would beat me and I wanted to say Dude, we are not racing, Im doing easy strokes to work on my breathing, but I didnt, I did not want to hurt his feelings. I wanted him to leave thinking I beat that man.. Maybe next time I will kik it up a notch so he can eat my wake. But the swim was good. I would swim either 50 yards or 100 yards and then take a break to think about what I did and how to improve. I think I need to look at gettng some of those paddles yall are talking about. Hey what is the pull or pool bouy for?? they have them at the pool to use, but not sure what to do with them. I know yall talked about it way back about 50 pages ago. Well have a great day |

Well have a great day Hitting a 1000 yards was a huge psychological boost for me. A "Pull Buoy" you hold between your legs, it holds your legs level in the water and allows you to focus on your stroke without kicking. We don't have them at my pool but we do have those foam, dumb bell things that work just as well. I knew there were technical socks, I have some left over from my cycling bygone days. These are very small though, I will give them to my wife.. |

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDGEORGE - Yo! Congrats on 1000 yards, and congrats on doing bilateral so well. Cool beans! I agree with the shoe store -- ditch the cotton socks! Cotton socks can bunch more easily than tighter and thinner "tech" socks, and so you run a greater risk of blisters. But even tech socks come in a range of thicknesses, although I wear only the thinnest of the thin, when I wear socks at all. But it's all very personal, so experiment around some and see what suits you. HOWEVER, now that you have new running shoes they will probably only accommodate a sock roughly the same thickness as the ones you were wearing when you bought the shoes, so you might be restricted some as to how much experimenting you can do. Pull buoys are pretty much as Jeff describes them. They improve bouyancy and can give a sensationof swimming being easier, but that doesn't necessarily work for a person who has an decent kick but poor front-end mechanics. However, that's the kind of person who can benefit from a pull buoy, as it does like Jeff says -- focus virtually everything on the front end of the stroke. A drawback to using them affects people who race without a wetsuit, as they don't develop the stronger kick they need in open water swims. I use a pull buoy a LOT, but then again all of my races are in a wetsuit and I kick virtually not at all. Another drawback to a pull buoy is it messes with body rotation some, and if "worn" too high can hinder the torque from the hips. But p-b can be worn anywhere, from snug-to-the-crotch all the one down to just above the ankles. Play around with one next time you're in the pool, wear it in different places and see the different effects it has on your progress! Finally, as for that guy who was using you as his rabbit, it might be that he was practicing hard swimming and wasn't necessarily trying to show you up; he probably hope you didn't notice! On the other hand, the guy could just be a ! |

Seriously -- very wise to skip a treacherously windy bike ride, and the run had several benefits to it. I'm not sure I can rmember you speaking so highly of a run before, with "light as a feather" being the coup d'grace. Wouldn't it be just peachy if all runs were like that?? That's a good trick to go 10, and then 10 more, and then 10 more again, and really --- whatever works is valid! Some people do it with light posts, or mailboxes, or passing cars. Deception and trickery has its virtues and rewards! |

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDKASIA again - Massive mood swings.......self-loathing........attitude adjustment......... Yeah, it seems you are fighting a few demons there, for sure. I don't know what to suggest, really, opther than to focus on all the potential good that can come from the Masters program. I wasn't aware that you were getting lots of technical help, or that people were so welcoming and friendly towards you. I know I have told you a couple of times that in another year you will be in another lane watching people who will be in your present lane, and I guess your were told the same thing by soem of the others at the pool. (See? great minds think alike!) If there is a pattern with you, it's that you miss a fair number of workouts, but that you are very diligent about substituting something else in their place. Overall, that is a very positive thing. I guess there are three classes of workouters -- those who never miss a workout, those who always miss workouts, and those like you who can't or don't make a planned workout, but fit something else in its place. And some people in the first category make themselves nuts in being so dogged and bullheaded, so at least you're not channeling some Type A part of yourself and stressing out about doing everything by the book. Truth told, some people can follow plans extremely well, others can't if their life depending on it. I have never been very good at following instructions and taking orders, but in the years I was coached ('03-'07) I just sucked-up my life-acquired slack habits and tried to follow every workout to perfection -- and mostly succeeded. Since then, however, I have enjoyed life on my own terms, doping what I want when I want to do it. Does that resonate with you on any level? To me, you seem to be kind of a "free agent", very much your own person who makes up rules for themself as they go along. Yes? No? Maybe? Edited by stevebradley 2011-03-12 8:55 PM |

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSED--------------------------------------------------------- "CHASING BUBBLES" ---------------------------------------------------------- A couple of months ago LORI mentioned that I might say a few things about open water swimming, and I've been holding that thought until someone asks something specific. Well, that hasn't happened yet, but a post GEORGE made earlier today got me to thinking about a type of training we can do in the pool now that will help when we're in the swim portion of a race. One of the inevitables of a race swim is being in a crowd, which some people refer to a "maelstrom" or a "washing machine". It can be unsettling to be in a crowded swim, nd for some peop,e it is most unsettling to have all this churned water around you and you can't see anything at all for all of the bubbles. A great way to get accustomed to this phenomena is to stay at the wall of the pool until a person comes along and kicks off. As soon as they kick off, you follow right away and try to stay in their wake -- preferably as close to their feet as you can. Do these a few times each swim session, and after about ten sessions you will think next to nothing about swimming in bubbles druing a race because you have chased bubbles often in practices. It is important, however, to not get so close to the person in front of you that you're touching his or her feet. Most people dislike this, but can tolerate it if it happens just once; more than this, however, might land a good foot-swat for your coziness! And I WILL say more later about handling some potential headaches and anxieties that come from open water race-day swims! |

I did a half-marathon in October in 1:37:08, which is about 4:36/km or 7:25/mile, and that pace would get me through a 15km in 1:09 or so. I guess I could handle a faster pace for the shorter distance of a 15km as opposed to 21.1km.......but to get down to 1:02 just wouldn't happen. Only in my dreams!! |

Actually, my brothers do surf in NS... but you need a full wetsuit and its still DAMN cold. I learned while on vacation in Bali. It's a long story, maybe I'll type it all out at some point, but basically the only good thing that happened on that vacation, was having a free afternoon and learning to surf. I must admit, I've never gone again after learning. I always mean to, Taiwan has some decent surfing on the North Coast, but just never get around to it.... Maybe this summer. |

I did a big hill close to home, then around a bit, and back again. It was really nice. Plus, I managed to complete at least my first ride without a wipe out... (worried about clipping out). A few stats. I was also significantly faster. I usually averaged about 20 ~ 21 km/h on my old bike while doing this ride. Today, I did 26km/h. Pretty happy about that. Also, on the way down the big hill I topped out at 59.5 km/h and I was still peddling... also pretty happy about that. Pictures will follow tomorrow, since I don't have the download cable with me at home. You can see them on my facebook page if your a friend though. |

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDELLEN - Woo-hoo! Let us cyberistically embrace and pat each other on the back! We have successfully naviagted the treacherous seas of computer training plan info!!! So, big kudos to you for your persistence and finally "cracking the code" of how to get it both up there and out there to the general viewing public. And kudos to me for not being defeating by initially seeing only an empty calendar, and taking the plunge to dare click on "calendar", and then again on "planned". Woo-hoo again! Ain't we the pair? As for the plan, it looks really, really good. I was initially dumbfounded by the first full weekend in March with FOUR STRAIGHT heavy cycling days.....but that must reflect what was there before you fiddled with it, yes? The high point of it is the smart cycling plan, which has two 4:00 rides, two 3:30 rides, and three 3:00 rides. The spacing of them is really wise, with the last 4:00 one maybe the wekend before Columbia. That might NOT be wise....but if you can get it back a couple of days it could even be a boon for Columbia. That bike course is kind of a topographical sufferfest, and one way to prep for that is to do a longer ride on easier terrain. (Is "easier terrain" locally available??) To my eyes, those weeks are ideal training for Eagleman. April has three in the ~11:00 range, and then May hits th e biggest number in the second week at just under 14, and then it cascades down to 12:30, 10:45, and 10:55 to finish the month. June has wo nivce weeks of a taper --- a quasi-taper of 6:30, and then the full-bore taper of 4:00 in the week that will culminate in Sunday's Eagleman. There are some other things (run, swim, days off) I will say later, but I have to clear off here in case Lynn Skypes me in a few minutes. GOOD plan, Elllen! On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being ecstatic, how do YOU feel about it.....and where do you see potential problems? |

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDELLEN again - From "Woo-hoo!" in my last post to Boo-hoo in this one, as Lynn didn't Skype me. Back to your training plan, then! Very complete swim schedule, and if that volume doesn't get you amply ready for Columbia first, and then as a launching pad for Eaglaman second, I'll be hornswaggled! The only question is have is whether you'll find it difficult to get in all those pool hours? The good news about the swim plans is that there is enough in the plan so that even if you have to miss several of them, you should be none the worse for it. What do you think? The run plan, too, is good. The heavy part comes in April as a lead-in to the H-M on May 7, with two at 2:00 and one at 1:30. After the H-M you get two more longies, a 1:40 and a 1:45. All of that ought to get you rady for E-man without having the potential to lay you up with some gnarly overuse injury. Yes? Finally, the days off seem reasonable -- not a lot of rhyme or reason to their placement that I can see, but they're there. You're in a tough stretch now with no days off scheduled for two full weeks, but then you get six striaght weeks with 2-1-2-2-2-1 days off before emerging from the H-M to have a couple of weeks off.....leading into Columbia, right? And then the two taperish weeks with a day off in each --- perfect! Finally-finally, i see some strength stuff in there, too; are you able to do that? If not, don't feel too bad. I started being coached in early '03, and even though Erik regularly set strength sessions for me......it wasn't until Feb '05 that i joined a gym and actually starting following his guidelines for strength training! Those years were still very much in my working days, and for the first couple of them with Erik I couldn't reasonably fit in another commitment to my life (ads it was, i was driving 45' each way on work days). So, I wouldn't say that NOT doing strength is a deal-breaker......but I will quickly add that once I started doing it, I think it made a big difference. Onwards!! |

I rarely share a lane. Only 2 times this off season. So ... what I do to sort of 'acclimate' myself to race swims -- is to rather than stop and either A-dump out water that has leaked into my google or B. stop to unfog my google --- I let the water and/or fog stay as it is and EVEN let it get worse so that my eye sight is greatly hampered. That to me is how it can feel swimming in murky water. I have to rely on training and doing this odd thing has let me work out some of those heebie jeebies of feeling 'lost' and get more comfy in the water. |
