Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDJEFF - That swim sounds like a mess. Your time for it was great, and I'm impressed that you can do flip-turns (I've never learned), but the congestion and confusion must've been a true nuisance. I just posted to George aboit how to avoid related problems on stand-alone running races, but it's not a ssimple with swims. I have never done a pool-swim-race, but know enough that people are asked to seed themselves correctly. I REALLY think that most people can do the math and figure out how long it will take them to do 500y or whetever the distance is, but either people don't underdtand the concept or let their egos get in the way of common-sense. A 7:24 is a very nice time for you, and I think it "gives you permission" to move up in the line of your next pool tri! Congrats! As for the cold on the bikes ---- oops! Over the years I have taken some real gambles with underdressing in the face of cold, and so far I haven't paid the price too serioulsy. It's tough to start a tri run when the feeling is one of running on stumps, and foir me with poor circulation to my extremities, it can take a mile or two until all systems are go down to my toes. Clump-clump! |

Veteran 142![]() ![]() Charlotte, NC | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDHey Gang! Back at work today but wanted to let everyone know the Tri I did on Sunday went pretty good! I missed my goal time by about 10 minutes (which I was very dissapointed with); however I didn't take into account it was going to be 40 and raining! Yes...just one weekend before we were in the 80's and this weekend for whatever reason was COOOOLLLLDDDD! Needless to say, spent an extra 5 mintues total in T1 & T2, absolutely froze my tushy off on the bike (numb fingers/toes) along with not being able to ride too aggressive with the slick conditions and did OK on the run (once I started getting the feeling back in my toes)! All in all, based on the conditions, I was happy to finish with a decent time....but I can't wait until next month when I get to do this course again, but hopefully in warmer/sunnier conditions. Will post race results in the next couple of days once I get caught up....but it's back to training again for now! David |

Extreme Veteran 371![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Mobile | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDOk It's Proud Daddy Time.. Just got the race results in for my son's first official race. He raced a duathlon yesterday in Pensacola Fl (.25 mile run, 2 mile bike, .5mile run) Here is his race results. Run .25 mile 2:07min placed 17 out of 60 Bike 2 Miles 9:55min placed 10 out of 60 Run - .5miles 4:43min placed 10 out of 60 Overall placed 23 out of 60. Thing is he could have finished better then what he did. On the bike about 50 yards out from the transition his right pedal fell off. *** If you buy a bike from Target, make sure you go behind them and tighten all nuts and bolts Well I have my 1st bike race this weekend 4/2 and its 21.4 miles. I really look forward to it. My rec center that I joined is also having an indoor tri on 4/16 that I plan to do, It should be fun going against all those young college folks since the rec center is part of the University of South Alabama. The race is 2 miles on the treadmill, then 8 miles on their spin class bikes and then 300 yards in the indoor pool.. I think its going to be crazy, the bikes are on the 3rd floor, the treadmill is on the 2nd floor and the pool is on the 1st floor. I guess when I seed myself in this race I better bump my time up a little so I dont run into the same problem that Jeff did. As for doing that flip thing in the pool, I still have not tried, but it does not look easy to do. Hey can everyone that has done a tri race before please post some does and dont in Tri races. It would be nice to hear from yall folks that have done one and will help us others that have not done one. |

Come on everyone I know you have some Do and Dont in a Tri race, lets post them. Have a great day. Here are mine Do - make sure you tighten all your nuts and bolts, you dont want to finish your bike portion with one leg. Dont - If you get sick looking at blood and you cut your leg coming off the bike portion, Do Not Look At It, just run. (This happened to me back in 1993, I cut my leg somehow and then I looked at it, well about 1/4 mile in the run the world started to fade out and before I went to sleep ok passed out I stopped and laid on the grass, race was over for me) |

Say "hi" to Neil Saxon from me on Sunday. He's from my group two years ago and is doing the race. I haven't heard from him in a while, and hope his training has gone well. That'll be a good one to spectate/volunteer at -- lot of hype, lot of good talent. For the past several years the 70.3 championship has been in Florida. Of course, lots of Californians have qualified and gone, even though it isn't an easy jaunt. This year, though, the championship will be right near Las Vegas, so the competition will be fierce on Sunday -- full of people who will want to do that, and now can (if they can qulaify!!!), seeing as how it is so close to home. Other than that.....how are you? |

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDGEORGE - Okay, here goes -- a DO and DON'T list. It won't be exhaustive, as I didn't think it through in steail since last night and am mostly winging it right now; there will probably be some more items later. DO try to scope out the course beforehand. Try to drive the bike course, and maybe ride the run course. DO arrive as early as you possibly can. If transition opens at 5a.m., aim to arive at 4:45. This'll give you the best parking, and if the transition spots are first-come-first-served -- perfect! DO dig the vibe. Chat people up, ask questions, enjoy the mood. DO get body-marked as soon as you can, and hit the port-a-potties often! DO set your spot up carefully, and make sure you know where everything is. Re-check. Check again. DO listen to pre-race announcements for changes in wave times or sequences. DO take the time to go over the "flow" of the race in and around the tranistion zone -- walk through everything, maybe twice. Go from swim exit to your bike spot; know where bike exit is, and the quickest way to get you and your bike there; know where the mount line is; know where the dismount line is, and the best way to get from there back to your spot; know where run exit is, and the qucikest way6 to get from your bike to it. Really, walk this through one, twice, or thrice! DO try for a warm-up swim -- five minutes easy. If the water is <70F and you haven't a wetsuit, maybe pass on it. DO position yourself appropriately at the swim start. If you don't want to "mix it up", start to the back or off to the side. If you are feeling slow, start to the back. If you "drift" one way or the other, begin on the other side from your drifting tendency. DO go out easily -- you don't want to get hypoxic within the first 50 yards. DO wait to stand up until your fingers clearly touch the bottom for three or four strokes --- otherwise you just waste energy slogging through too-deep water. DO start thanking volunteers, right there at he swim exit, and keep it up throughout the race. Also thank random spectators who are cheering you on. DEFINITELY thank those fine souls who stand out there on a hot day spraying you with their garden hose as you run past! DO take a swig from each aid station, even if it's hardly mosre than wetting your lips. DO keep your head up as you approach the finish line -- and try to spruce up your form, just a bit! DO avoid messing with your watch as you cross the dfinish line. I have had many dopey photos taken where it seems as if my exact time for that race was the most important thing in the universe. DON'T get freaked by the swim start, as it's seldom as crazy as it looks. DON'T worry about being "swum over" -- seldom happens, no one wants contact they can't control, even the faster or more aggressive swimmers. DON'T spend every second monitoring your time and trying to do the math as to how each leg of it will turn out; ignoring your watch as much as possible is the best idea. DON'T get rattled by relatively small mishaps, such as your chain dropping or having trouble getting on one of the running shoes. Being methodical and systematic is better than rushing like a bat out of hell, especially for your first dozen or so races. DON'T litter. You'll be told this over and over at the pre-racre announcements.....but once you're on course and see how many people either didn't hear or chose to ignore those announcemnts, and it speaks poorly for us as decent human beings. DON'T set goals that you can't control. A common one is "winning the age group", which is hazardous becase you never know who will show up on race day! Is that about it? Probably not, and as I siad above I will keep thinking about this and add stuff later. I hope some of it is useful! |

Expert 1051![]() ![]() ![]() San Jose | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDGeorge, Here's my addition for a 'do': Do write out a race plan. You can keep it simple or go into a lot of details. Write out what your pre race meal will be, what time you need to eat it, warm up, your plan for the swim, sometimes it helps to think through and write out the steps in transition as a check off list and leave the list there to check yourself, how you want to go out on the bike, steady and get your heart rate in check for a couple of miles then push, etc., plan out T2, think through your run, set a plan for how you want to break up the run. Make a plan and see yourself cross that finish line
I like all the other do's and don't too. Especially riding/driving the course. It always helps me a ton to get a feel for the course.
The biggest 'do': Have fun! Realize that you are in the minority of people that have put in the time and effort to enter a race and you rock! Johanne |

I do like the idea of riding the course. The three 5K's I did this year I had no idea where I was running, I just followed the person in front of me. My last run I thought about riding the course in the future, I think it will just help out mentally for me. The last race I did I thought I had further to go then I did when I started to walk, If I knew the course and knew that I was almost at the finish line then I would have not walked. Johanne, have fun on your 100K ride this weekend. I have a 21.4 mile bike race this weekend which should be a lot of fun. There is a tri race on 4/16 and part of me wants to do it, to get a feel for a tri race. It's called the Mullet Tri and Florabama is the one that puts it on. It should be a lot of drunk and crazy folks racing since Florabama is a bar that sits on the Florida and Alabama line, its known for its wild and crazy events like the Mullet Toss. Yes people get out there and throw these big mullet fish to see who can throw it the longest. The race is 1/4 mile swim in the gulf of mexico, the bike I think is about 16miles and the run is 4 miles. Have a great day eveyone. |

I hope everyone has a great day. You could mix up a bottle of regular strength Heed for the bike portion of the sprint tri. You won't need to drink the whole bottle (standard 20 oz bike bottle). Hydration and nutrition for a sprint tri isn't complicated. Warm or hot weather = more hydration. One gel should just about do it for nutrition. If you sweat a lot, you simply need to drink more. If Heed tastes good to you and you tolerate it well, use it. Test it out in training. I use Heed in my bike bottle for sprint tris. I take one gel about 20-30 minutes before the swim start and chase it with water. I live off the aid station on the run. If it is cool, I skip the run aid station. You can also make another bottle of Heed to sip on while you travel to the race and while you set up your transition area. Just my 2 cents FWIW. |
