Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDJEFF again - Your percentages are probably not far off, but I tend to look at it more in terms of time. To wit: For an oly, which I do in about 2:30, here's the approx breakdown: S -- 30' B -- 70' R -- 46' (transitions make up the leftover) For a half-iron, which is about 5:20 for me, it's: S -- 40' B -- 165' R -- 110' (a few minutes in t-times also) Looking at it in terms of time changes things, doesn't it! It also points out how much a strong cyclist and/or runner can benefit from a half-iron, as opposed to an oly --- all that extra time and distnace to do what comes best for them! That's certainly the case for me, anyhow, and it's why I wish my body could better handle the strains of training and racing at the longer half-iron and iron levels. I'm really not good for much more than one or two half-irons each season, anymore. Were I to train according to race distance, then in the average week where I do three (often four) 35-40 minute open-water swims, I would cycle about 8 hours and run between 5 and 6 hours -- if the training is for a half-iron. (Most people won't do those swims, however; I just do it cuz I love open water swimming and have decent access to it.) That's a pretty high-volume week, as it turns out, more than what the average person would do for half-iron training. BUT, I don't follow that type of graded training schedule, and while those swim distances and times are accurate, I normally will not put in as many bike or run hours as I suggest above; that 's just there to try to get a grasp on race/time-based training. Does any of this make any sense? |

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDSARAH - Good story about the bike computer! I love accounts of the "sillies" we supposedly experienced people have committed over the years! You're only slightly behind me; I have but one outside ride this off-season. Last year it was about eleven of them in March, which was a huge anomaly....but still worth cherishing and hoping to repeat again every year. I'm planning to head out for a ride in about an hour ---- and stay outside for my rides until October!!!! This next week looks favorable for that, although rain could chase me back indoors and onto the venerable trainer again. Not all that long ago I was pretty hard-core about venturing forth in cold and wet, but as I get I get softer and softer, it seems. Were I to have some serious early-season races on my schedule, well, that might toughen me up some, but....... |

I will probably keep the swims at 3x week. warmer weather will bring the prospect of lake swims-I can ride to the lake, get my swim in and ride again. Looking at 80+ degrees today about go go get 3 hours or so..maybe 50 miles on the bike and a short transition run. Lost a litter or bunnies today-bummed out about that. Was getting 4-5 litters a season most surviving to fryer size, lately whole litters die at once-strange. Ill probably get out of the rabbit biz for a while that will free up a bit of time |

Master 2236![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Denison Texas | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDI ended up with 56 miles and a very poor short run after that. Time to recover a bit and plant tomatoes. Here is what came to me as I was a little lost on my ride today regarding some previous musings. I will go through April with some fairly high mileage rides on Saturday and short on Sunday and 2 1 hour week day rides-intervals and tempo work. This will address my concerns about bike volume without costing me much in the other 2 disciplines. In May I will scale it back a bit on Saturday to closer to the Oly distance but increase the intensity, more race specific, fool with the equipment and nutrition etc. That race is May 22, I will then have 3 1/2 months to focus specifically on Branson except those 2 centuries I threw in there. One of those rides I know is very hilly so that is good. Edited by Av8rTx 2011-04-02 3:37 PM |

Felt pretty good about it, especially since when I ran a 10km race 4 years ago, I finished in about 1:14:00. So pretty happy with my progress.
Today, I decided to try another long run, this time with my new fuel belt (Birthday present from my wife) and an energy gel, just to see what its like... never tried one before. I ran 11km in 1:03:22. So... feeling pretty good right now. Also, my private lesson for this evening just called and took the night off... so I can go home and rest. Do you think the energy gel made a difference? Gene |

It's an all women's bike ride about 45 minutes from home. The furthest I had ridden before was 55 miles so I was wondering how I would do. I think my legs are still in shape from all the running and that helped a ton. There was 2000 ft of climbing but the hills were spread out. The best part was finishing feeling good. Yippee!
Sad about the bunnies Jeff. I wonder what's going on? I used to raise rabbits for food when I was a kid. It was my 4-H project.
Sarah, I was thinking about you today when I was imagining your son playing on his ramp with snow on the ground
Hope everyones having a great weekend. Johanne |

Johanne Great ride, the 100k is a fun distance. My buck is about 4 years old, the doe only 2. I gave away another doe with similar issues, but I felt she was a bad mom-kindling on the wire instead of the box, eating her kits etc. I had inbred her with her father I read you could get away with one generation of that. but honestly I have not put the same attention and effort I used to with them and the novelty if rabbit meat has faded, we have about 10 in the freezer now along with 3 or 4 young roosters. My life and zip code may change in the very near future, if we move to The Farm in Kansas I'll re-visit rabbits again. |

Veteran 418![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() , Louisiana | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDHey all, Sorry for my prolonged absence. I didn't realize I was gone so long until I actually looked at a calendar. Yikes! All is well here. I've been running a bit, but biking a lot more. The weather's getting really nice (hit 80 F yesterday...today's it's snowing, though) so it's kind of hard going indoors to swim in the pool, which is why I haven't been doing too much of that. I've also been having a hard time fitting in all my workouts and rugby practices and games and having a life, so I'm considering dropping out of my early season tris and starting formal training once the rugby season is done in early May. I want to be fully prepared for them and it's not looking like that's going to happen. I really want to do the Olympic distance tri I did last year, but it's in June and I'm not even close to where I should be fitness-wise for that. So instead of having a horrible time during the tri and rushing the training, I think I'm going to do some later season ones instead and focus on getting a good base and enjoying biking and running and swimming. The good thing is that there are a couple of tris in July, August, and September that I was really looking forward to doing, and probably would've done anyways, so it's not like I would have to settle for something I didn't want. This is all still up in the air as I haven't registered for anything yet and none of the tris are sold out, so we'll see. But having the option to do a different tri relieves a lot of the pressure I've been feeling lately. Anywhos, hope everyone's been doing well. I haven't read up too much because school and work are kicking my butt (it's exam season), but I've been lurking a bit here and there. Kasia |

I do have a question, drafting, does it really help out. I noticed there were a lot and I mean a lot of group riders that were drafting and the front guy would drop back and then let the next take the lead. Me I was all alone fighting against the wind. I thought about jumping in one of the groups but I didnt since I did not know them. I didn't see a question in there but, yes, pace line skills will make a huge difference. Since it was a race you could probably have joined the group. But don't do that if you haven't worked on pacelines some. You won't last long. If they don't want you there they will probably let you cook out in front without pulling through or accelerate hard after each of your pulls. There are some strategies and tactics taking place in a paceline or even a peloton team dynamics at play. If is a fascinating sport when you begin to understand it below the surface |

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDGEORGE - Well, you're now officially one up on me, as I have never done a stand-alone bike race. I might at some point, but I never make an effort to search for one. Anyhow, that's great that you had a terrific time, and it also sounds like whatever you tried - gel, HEED - worked well for you. So, you have that body of experience to either take directly into the sprint, or top maybe work to refine a bit between now and then. I suspect that whatevere you did today will work equally as well at the tri. Nice pace you set for yourself -- and all without the benefits of drafting! I see that Jeff has already chimed in with his thoughts of pacelines and peletons, and in my no-participatory stance I have nothing more to add. Actually, that's not true..... Even in a draft-legal race, I wouldn't take advantage of either joining a paceline or getting into a peleton. Why? Well, even though I believe I have very good bike-handling skills, they have not been refined in any type of pack setting; therefore, I don't know how far I trust myself to not get jumpy and be the cause of some massive pile=up --- or even just me and some poor hapless rider. And even if I felt I COULD handle those situations with perfect nerves of steel.....I'm not sure how much I would want to trust any of the people around me! This topic comes up every so often over at Slowtwitch, and always begins with a poster asking why there aren't draft-legal triathlons, and then the hordes descending on him with the points I mentioned above. The upshot is that the average triathlete has absolutely no idea about how to ride smartly and safely in a pack, or even a paceline for that matter. Many people take great offense at this, but I think that to race like a roadie you have to spend a lot of time training like a roadie, and few triathletes ever do that. JEFF? Thoughts? |
