Thanks for the responses about moving the long runs/rides around. That was my gut feeling but it's nice to have the back up. I totally agree with the comments about us older athletes needing to spread workouts around to make it work with recovery time

I realized (again because I've wrestled with this many, many times) today what a mental game this all is. I transferred all my workouts until July into my iCal calendar on my computer and got a little overwhelmed looking ahead to what I'm going to have to do in order to be ready for my HIM in July. I know everyone says trust the plan but I'm 50, still a little chunky and only into my second years of tri's! The HIM distance is a little daunting to me. I had a decent run and swim Tuesday. Just had an hour easy recovery bike yesterday but my legs were tired. Today I had swim and swam 3,000 yds for only the 3rd time in my lap swimming career. Then later I went for a run and averaged 9:23 min/mile for almost 4 miles which is super fast for me. Yesterday I was wondering why in the world I signed up for the race and today I'm feeling like if I put in the time I'll be fine. Fickle me

George, I admire you plugging away through the workouts while still doing the good husband/dad thing. You are a busy guy! We have sharks occasionally in Northern California but I haven't encountered one yet. We do have dolphins cruising by sometimes which is pretty cool and some sea lions we try not to make eye contact with so they don't yell at us in case they have a baby with them.

Jeff, hope the wetsuits shows up on time. Will it be warm enough to swim without if it doesn't?

Shannon, it sounds like you guys are over the 'sick' hump. I remember when my kids were that age and they always would get sick one at a time so it seemed like it took forever to run its course. What kind of saddle did you get? I replaced my stock saddle with an Adamo and so far so good.

With moving this weeks runs around, I think I'm going to enter a local 5K just to see if I can come in under 30 min. This is one of my goals for the year so we'll see.

Hope everyones having a great day,

Johanne

I thought I posted already but maybe I forgot to hit 'enter'. Hate when i do that

Anyhow...I've hopped on the buying bandwagon. Just bought a Griffen used tri bike off ebay. I really didn't think I'd win it thus was not totally expecting to fork over that kind of cash. doh! But I got it for 670. what a deal! I've heard good things about Griffens - but I do know they are not made anymore. Anyone ride one? Hope I haven't made a big mistake. I'm still not sure what I'll say to my husband LOL. Guess I'll be selling my road bike. Anyone wanna tri converted rode bike? Nice Jamis...not too many miles...profile design tri bars... I'll even throw in my rubber whale horn!

I don't know enough about bikes to offer an opinion but buying new stuff is fun! Tell your husband you need a back up bike and keep both

@ Johanne - you go girl! You are a training machine and I admire how well you follow a plan. (see, if I did that, maybe I'd improve!) Anyhow...yeah, moving stuff around happens with me lots...mostly due to work/family issues but I seem to pay a price when I have 2 heavy training days back to back. I'm right behind you in the age group world and yeah, my body doesn't seem to like when I skip stretching or resting. I've learned to cue into when I can push and when I need to ease up. Injury takes too long at my age! LOL

You're doing all the right stuff!

Well, at least five of you have found your way here! I figured I had another week to re-post the "we're gonna get archived soon" message, but alas, I was too slow on the draw. I hope the others catch up to us sooner rather than later (or never! ).

JEFF (Buyer #1) -

I will have to check out that model. Aquasphere is fairly new to the wetsuit game, but I seem to remember seeing good things in general about their suits. They sure have a good rep for goggles!

As for the mode of delivery --- I think it will be there with a few days to spare!

SARAH (Buyer #2) -

A Griffen! Lucky girl!! Back in the day (I hate it when I say that! ) when I began this stuff, Griffen was extemely highly-regarded for their tri bikes. This would be back in '00/'01.......and then I don't know what exactly happened. i don't know if they got engulfed and devoured by larger and more aggressive tri-bike-makers, or whether they went to just road bikes, or whether they ceased and desisted.

Anyhow, I am sure you got a very sound bike, and as long as it fits you well --- ya done good! I'll be very interested to see what you think of it when you finally get to meet it. (Kind of like a mail-order husband? ) Please let us know all the details!!

I am the proud owner a Griffen bandana/headscarf, and that is on me every weight session I do. It also accompanies me on un-sunny birdwatching days, and while Lynn doesn't ever seem to notice anything I wear, she very much enjoys and/or approves of the Griffin head-thingy. It is red, yellow, and black, with their logo taking up the whole expense of it. I'm always afraid I will lose it.

GEORGE -

Nicely executed morning sessions ----- and VERY nice setting you've got for the mock-tri this weekend. Wow! That beats hands-down any of the numerous bricks I have done out of the back of my car!

As for sharks, you should be fine. The odds of them getting anyone is pretty low, and even lower when you're in a pack. I mean, that's the strategy of many potential prey species --- stay clumped, and hopefully your numbers will be intimidated to the potential predator.

One of my fears is doing a May or June race up here, and having a problem on the bike or run, and having to walk it back in ---- with the black flies and mosquitoes feasting on me. Lord have mercy on my tasty soul!!

JOHANNE -

You might call it "fickle", but whatever -- it is pretty much universal for anyone who makes the jump up to that distance. You're right that there is a big mental component to it, and just settle in for many mood/attitude/confidence swings between now and July 17 --- which is still 3+ months away!

You WILL be fine! Let it lodge firmly in your mind that you went well over-distance for that swim -- like, half-again over (did I say that right?) A HIM swim is 2000m and you did 3000y, and it's the third time you've done that, and you will do it again and again and again between now and then.

You are also over-distance in your running and cycling training, so quite literally you have at least 14 weeks to refine the endurance/speed factors of the three disciplines. That is, you don't have to BUILD any more to get to the 1.2miles/56miles/13.1miles; you just have to work at getting faster and more efficient at arriving at those distances on July 17.

And, of course, that's what the plan is designed (at least in part) to do. So, you're right -- trust it, and try to follow it as best you can. Fudging parts of it according to need is perfectly fine, and fudging accordingly to desire is mostly okay -- just so long as it doesn't become a habit and runs the risk of messing with the overall integrity of the program.

Finally, though, as I've said before --- these are "canned" programs and just cannot possibly address the particular life-factors of all the people using them. So, as you need recovery, but all means take it! (And you're hardly a slacker, so i think it's very safe to tell you that because you are not at all likely to abuse that option! )

Finally-finally, each week try to identify the workouts that might be "key" and if a week seems like it might be problematic fitting everything it, start any adjustments around fitting in the key workouts. Meet those head on --- you'll be sitting pretty come July 17!

Well I just un-bought it. The rep said this suit didn't fit my body type very well and they only recommended it to ppl 6'2 and up, so I am going to rent one and let them choose then perhaps buy that one

Sarah - Congrats on the bike.  Just do what I did sell everything you own to pay for the bike.  That is how I talked my wife into letting dish out the cash for my bike.  I sold my Generator and trailer, but it was nice because my mom bought the generator and my brother purchased the trailer, so I can still use them when I want and I get a bike.  Oh I have some Ping golf clubs that were purchased 3 years ago and used 3 times along with a Window AC unit still in the box for sale, so if you know someone shopping let me know, this way my wife will stop making go sell my blood and plasma once a week.

Johanne, thanks for the nice words.  I do really love this sport and I went to my cardio Dr last week for a visit and my numbers are improving, so now I really really love this sport. (That means more years to stick around with my family

Shannen, welcome back and Im glad everyone is feeling better. I will send some warm weather your way so you can get out on that bike and stay healthy.

Lori, keep plugging away on the 1/2 mary training. Lori I see in your training log you do shin splint  exercises, can you share with me what are you doing fo that?  I always have a shin splint issue and would love to see if that would help.

Steve, I do hate those mosquitos.  But as for the black flies, just open the mouth and let them in, im sure they are good protein and that will stop you from having a protein shake after the workout. YUMMMM

My Aunt just got to the rental on Mobile Bay and sent this picture.  This is where I will do my mock tri on Sat and then on June 4th my 1st offical USAT tri will be held out in these waters also.  The one next week is not a USAT, atleast i dont think it is because it did not ask for my member number or talk about the 1 time day fee.  Im doing a race in July and not really sure what to call it.  The bike and run are Oly distance and longer but the swim is not.  The swim is 880yds (.5mile) the bike is 27.5 miles and the run is 7 miles.  So would you consider this race to be an Oly since 2 of the 3 are over the Oly distance.

George - Your aunt is blessed hangin' out at a home with that view! Gorgeous! And I can totally relate to selling stuff, having personal budget cuts, etc..to pay for all this dang tri stuff. Hey, I have golf clubs too that are basically collecting dust. Any takers? Luckily, my husband, although he doesn't quite get 'it' and looks at my blankly when I talk about little issues on technique or whatever on my run or bike or swim, has been supportive and buys me stuff for Christmas/birthday like my Terry saddle, new tri shoes and my winter go to socks-Smartwool.

And great to hear your health is improving with tri-ing. I've got some years on you and I wish I had done this a long time ago. But I know I'm in the best cardio shape I've ever been! (I used to smoke 2 packs a day in my 20s to early 30s and had my cholesterol at 335) so here's to all of our health! Cheers!

Oh yeah, you WI peeps know what I'm talkin' about... LAKE FLIES! They are due to have their first hatching soon...

Makes riding or running for that matter really bad within a mile of the lake (I live within 1/2 mile of the lake).

Holy Cow Sarah, now that is a swarm of flies.  It reminds me of that horror movie about the attack of the birds, where million of birds attach this town.  I thought our love bugs down here were bad, it does not compare to those flies.  Have fun training with them.

I have found the new place...  I have been hibernating for the last few days.. finally yesterday I got in a good swim with my instructor... 1000 yds so that was finally a bit of a break through.  Everyone sounds awesome and like they are doing well.  it is inspiring to read the posts... I have been needing that to try and keep moving forward with my training.  Thankfully it finally looks like spring is here and I have 2 outdoor rides scheduled this weekend!  YEAH!!!!

So I made up my short run yesterday and did a little speed work... How on earth are you people running sub 9 for any distance. I did 1/4 mi at 8:34 and had to walk to catch  my breath and started doing 1/8 mi at 7:30 and walk. I repeated until I got in 2 miles then just an easy run to finish my time. Much respect to you speed demons out there.

Even if there are sharks there, I think the venue is more than worth the hazard! What a glorious spot!

That tri will be what is known as "international" or "intermediate". The distances of the one you're doing are tailor-made for me, with a shorter swim and over-long bike and run. I am envious of you!!!!!!!!!!

---------------- TWO MORE FOR THE 'DO' LIST --------------------------

The fly topic brings to mind the first:
DO always wear sunglassses on the bike. There might not be huge swarms such as in the video, but all it takes is one fly (or bit of rock, or mote of dust) to ruin a race but good.

And continuing with eyewear.....
DO take the few moments pre-swim to guard against fogging of your goggles. Spitting on both sides of each lenses and rubbing gently, works quite well. Better yet is to use a formulated lens defogger just before you leave transition for the swim start.

Remember '05 in your neck of the woods? t
That was the year of the big outbreak of cicadas, and they were thick as thieves at Columbia. I even bought a t-shirt at the expo, commemorating the happening. I thought it was all very nifty; locals who had been through it before were not near so amused!

Welcome home!

And, big congrats on the breakthrough swim --- talk about "inspiring"!!!

Enjoy the outside rides, too. I also am hoping for a couple.....and also hoping that my hip/groin behave during them. The two rides I have had already were muddled some by minor problems, suggesting I probably need a bit more work from my A.R.T. person and my chiropractor. Bah.

When is your next swim happening?

CRAIG -

No short answer to your question, at least from this cat. For me it was a matter of time and time and time and time. And then more of the same. Ad nauseum. There was also patience involved, as well as good luck with injuries, and some good decisions with running shoes.

It really was a lot of time, though. As with so much else in this "gig", what is unforeseeable or seemingly impossible today, becomes attainable further down the road. Today's sub-10 is next ???? sub-9, and then then ???? along a sub-8. What can be sustained for x miles this month becomes sustainable for xx miles next year. You just gotta keep the faith, is all!

CRAIG again -

And what you did on yesterday's run was very fine; do not downplay it at all! You now have an idea of what it feels like to go at a certain speed/pace, and that can catapult you towards playing around with that knowledge, pushing the limits a bit more with pace and distance. You've laid the groundwork for yourself -- congratulations!!!!
