I read from time to time that BT members x-country ski. I know the LT is different between the bike and the run so it makes sense that skiing is also different. My question is, do you try and keep your HR at a certain level? What's a good way to set a range for x-country skiing to ensure a good cardio without doing a x-country skiing LT test?

My breathing usually tells me I'm getting the cardio, I'm just thinking in terms of obtaining the most efficient workout.

Just go by percieved exertion. If you have done field tests for running & biking and know what you feel like when you are training within whatever zone you have selected, then go for the same feel while cross country skiing.

I just started XC skiing this year and I'm hooked. I'm surprised anyone has time to pay attention to HR. When I do the skate technique, all I focus on is not falling on my a$$ which I did twice. And my instructor said I had really good balance so go figure. When I do the classic technique I just try to make it up the next hill and then build speed on the downhill. In short, I just try to have fun out there.

I do a bit of XC.  I have worn my HRM during some of my workouts.  For me, the HR is closer to biking than running.  Like biking, you get to coast a bit on the downhills.   I tried skate skis for the first time - definitely a hard workout!  But I will stick with my old traditional skis.  If I push hard enough, I can get a decent workout.

According to Joe Friel and his latest book related to heart rate training, HR zones for XC skiing are the same as for running. I can include a page reference number if you need it.
