Mentally prepare for the possibility of some headwind on the bike.  The good news, from what I can recall, is that the bike course is mainly flat, with some overpasses (you are riding on a highway lane/shoulder that is coned off).  Also think of what you will wear on the bike as it might be chilly.  If you plan on trying to put on a shirt in T1, you better practice it soaking wet.  Things don't go on the same way when you're wet.

Most importantly, have fun!  The first one is one to remember!

i did this race last year, pretty sure i have a race report posted.  i'm sure theres a good description of the race there.  now, a year later and without reading what i wrote then all i can remember is MONSTER hills.  they have you riding on the freeway so you are going up and down overpasses.  just before the turnaround to go back on the bike course theres a really long wonderful downhill that you can get great speed on.  its early in the morning so traffic is light but you still need to watch out for cars exiting.

This was my 2nd tri 3 years ago. I'm going back and doing it again this year. It's big, but it's a really good race.

Planning on doing this one.

Would someone explain to me wht they are asking for when they ask if I would like to sign up for Clydesdale or Athena.

Will be working in that area at the time and there is a good campsite about 12 miles from there right on the lake that has cabins. Cabin on the lake that can sleep 8 is around $100.00 a night, they also have smaller ones as well as tent and rv sites. If anyone is interested let me know

I've got a room at the American Inn and Suites in town and I get military discount...ladies- if any of you are doing this race (sorry guys, no co-ed hotel rooms for me) and want to share the room, it's got double beds, shoot me a PM and we can work it out. Looks like quite a few BT'ers will be there. This will be my first tri as well!

This is going to be my first tri. I was wondering how do they do the swim in the pool. And can you kick off the wall in the turns?
I may be interested in going in on the cabin. Had planned on just sleepin on an air matress in the van but I wouldn't mind splitting a cabin. keep me posted. Clydes are 200 plus for guys and 150 for ladies

It's a snake swim. It's been so long since I did this one, I can't remember exactly. It's either:

  • Go down in lane 1 and go under the ropes to lane 2.
  • Go down and back in lanes 2-6
  • Go back in lane 7 and exit

OR

  • Go down and back in lanes 1-6

You can definitely kick off the wall in the turns. That's where I get most of my speed. You can do flip turns, open turns, whatever you want to do. About the only thing you can't do is dive in at the start.

If memory serves, the Athens pool is small enough that your first scenario is right.

This was my first last year. My wife and I are racing it this year as a systems check for LoneStar. I had a blast last year and thought that it was a great way to enter the sport. I do remember that I had wish that I was better equipped for a hilly course. I managed 18.5mph average and it about killed me....

Dwayne,

Clint (jcbolton) and I would be interested in sharing a cabin.  We live in East Texas, but it's still a ways a way.  This will save us a trip back forth since we will have to pick up the packet the day before.

Just checked my RR from last year, and it is 6 lanes.  This one is really fun.  And a local church holds a pasta dinner the night before!  I do remember it being a bit chilly...

Are you planing on staying Friday and Saturday night. Keep me posted on the details. I would just assume stay in the cabin if there are a couple peeps who want to split the cost.

Don't worry Mike, you won't be the only newbie out there for the first time--we'll freak out a little with you.

I have been told that a pre-race dinner the night before was held the past few years, so once we get info on it, we'll all have to figure out a little BT get together and photo op!

Would be cool to meet up with all the first timers at Athens. Went to a try a tri seminar in Denison today. Way cool info. I won a door prize. Free one year membership to waterloo. Its indoor olympic size pool. A few guys and gals gave me their schedual and said they would help me on the swim. Double Cool. Still on the hunt for a starter road bike. 58cm based on hight. Keep me posted.

Glad to see everyone responding...We should make plans to get together at the race if possible...Does anyone know how many people usually participate in the race?
