Pre-race routine:

It was a bit crazy at the house this morning. I woke up late, had a bowl of Kashi Mini-Wheats and a cup of coffee. Drank a bottle of Gatorade Endurance on the way to the race. Met up with Shane (shanec) at registration.
Event warmup:

Did a 20 min run with Shane at about an 8:00 pace with one stride that was a bit quick at a 5:30 pace. Stretched a bit, took a swig of gel and a little water and walked down to the start line.
Run
  • 40m 1s
  • 6.22 miles
  • 06m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

I wanted to run this race a bit different than last week. I wanted to go out faster for the first 2 miles, back off the middle 2 miles and try to pick it up for the last 2 miles. I passed the first mile mark at 6:20!! I thought to myself, "UH OH!", but just stuck to the plan. I was somewhere around a 6:30 for the second mile, only the first mile was marked. I backed off the pace for the middle 2 miles to around a 6:45 pace and it actually felt pretty easy! That was a good feeling! The last 2 miles I picked the pace back up and was chasing some skinny tall high schooler for the last mile. I was on his heels but could not get around him. I saw the clock at the finish line at 39:50 and tried to push it to get in below 40:00 but missed it by :02!!! Overall, a great race. I could have pushed harder and gone under 40:00 but honestly expected to be closer to 41:00 and didn't push harder. NEXT TIME!!! I had my 5K splits at 20:30 / 19:31!!! But that is not official and I have to say that Marmadaddy still has a faster 5K than me! :)
What would you do differently?:

Nothing except maybe given a bit more at the beginning of the last 2 miles. :)
Post race
Warm down:

Jogged a bit, stretched, had a bagel and went home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing
