PRESS RELEASE ABOUT THE AUCTION:

Robert Louis Stevenson may have said it best when he said, "The cruelest lies are often told by silence." Child sex abuse is not an easy topic to discuss but it cannot be ignored. Children are 25% of our population and 100% of our future.

BeginnerTriathlete.com (BT) will be hosting the BeginnerTriathlete/Picabo Street Ski Challenge - Silent Auction in February of 2008 to draw attention to and raise money in the battle against child sex abuse.

In the silent auction, triathletes from all over the world will have a chance to donate and purchase triathlon gear while helping sex abused children at the same time. Starting February 1st, 2008, BT will open a portion of its forums up to a silent auction. Emilio DeSoto of DeSoto Sports has stepped up and offered up the first item for bid, a triathlon transition pack. Others are encouraged to follow his example and donate gear by listing gently used items on the forum. Triathletes looking for a bargain are encouraged to participate by bidding on gear.

BeginnerTriathlete.com has welcomed the opportunity to get involved. This popular web site has encouraged new triathletes to enter the sport and supported them with online tools and information along the way. BeginnerTriathlete.com’s basic services are free and hosts more than 65,000 online training logs as well as the silent auction forum. BeginnerTriathlete.com is truly one of the brightest spots on the web.

The Picabo Street Ski Challenge (www.picaboskichallenge.org) is currently in its fourth year and has led the way by drawing attention to our nation’s Child Advocacy Centers. BeginnerTriathlete.com is partnering with the Picabo Street Ski Challenge to get triathletes on board. While child sex abuse is a sensitive and difficult topic, triathletes are some of the most educated and progressive people on the planet. Undoubtedly, triathletes are well equipped to support such a meaningful and worthwhile cause.

Children's Advocacy Centers offer a new way of serving abused children through a comprehensive approach to services for victims and their families. These programs are designed by professionals and volunteers responding to the needs of their own communities. Children's Advocacy Centers stress coordination of investigation and intervention services by bringing together professionals and agencies as a multi-disciplinary team to create a child-focused approach to child abuse cases. The goal is to ensure that children are not re-victimized by the very system designed to protect them.

Master Sergeant John Garner, of the Illinois State Police, has supervised a child sex abuse investigation team for the past five years. Also a triathlete, Master Sergeant Garner has melded work and play to create the BeginnerTriathlete/Picabo Street Ski Challenge - Silent Auction .
