Swim
Comments: In previous races I have always gone out too hard and too fast in the swim and tired myself out. I wasn't sure how I'd go today so I decided that I was just going to do a comfortable pace and not push myself so much. To my surprise, I had a great swim! I was somewhere in the middle of the pack and passed quite a few girls, also my drafting was excellent. What would you do differently?: Train to comfortably swim faster. Transition 1
Comments: I remembered to take a bottle of water to wash my feet and this helped. I'd also laid everything out well. I always waste time getting my socks on, but I have to wear them because I wear orthotics in the run. What would you do differently?: Maybe pre-roll my socks so they're easier to get on? Bike
Comments: I've been doing lots of cycling in my training so I knew this was going to be my strongest leg. I gunned it as hard as I could and passed quite a few girls and blokes. I get paranoid about getting pulled up for drafting so I get stressed passing people, but there were no dramas today :) What would you do differently?: I want to get aero bars. I think I'm ready for them. Transition 2
Comments: Fine. What would you do differently?: Not much. Run
Comments: Oh my god!!!! Since when did slow-poke me start doing 5.84 minute kms??? I am totally blown away by that. I was really pleased with this run, especially as I haven't been doing a huge amount of running training. My main goal was just not to stop and run all the way, which I did (previously I've had to run/walk). What would you do differently?: Probably not much! :) Post race
Warm down: Fell into hubby's arms at the finish and ranted for about 10 mins about what I great race I'd had. Had an apple and some isotonic sports drink which was yummy. Said hello to some friends and then hung around cheering on some other friends that were doing the longer enduro tri. Watched Sean O'Neill in amazement. What limited your ability to perform faster: I think I had a pretty good race actually. There's always room for improvement but I have nothing to complain about today. Event comments: I am soooo over the moon with my performance. I shaved 5:50 off last years time and I finally feel like I've reached a fitness level where I am competitive and not just struggling to finish and coming in last. I also found that mentally I was in a good spot - I didn't pay attention to what everyone else was doing, instead just focused on myself. I have some long course sprint tris planned for March, a distance I have never done before. So for the next 6-7 weeks I am going to be training my arse off. I am also probably going to get aero bars. Got up at 5am. Breakfast of Sustain and skim milk. Had packed the night before. Drove down with hubby. Was pleased the toilets were open this year! Got a free gel in my race pack so I had this before heading down to the beach for a warm up.
Jogged for about 1km along beach, then lots of stretching.
