But I really miss trail running.

Last night I was plodding along and thinking back to when I started running. I did all trail running. LSD on the trail is so much more enjoyable then LSD on the road.

I never thought I would miss any aspect of running.

I'm going to have to find a trail near by that I can at least get to once a week.

I really enjoyed trail running too .. until I fell off the side of a mountain during a race and broke my thumb and buggered up my hip .. I did finish the race though, although it was my last .. now I prefer the nice gently rolling stable roads. ;-)

I <3 trail running, and so does my dog. It's one of many interests we share along with cookies, steak, beer, Ninja Warrior (he's kind of luke warm on this one, but there might be cookies), peanut butter, sleeping late on Sunday.....but I digress

yes, find a trail, and maybe a dog.

Trail running is SO much more fun than boring ol flat streets. For me, miles pass by on the trails much more quickly.

My dog is the one who started me running.

There are some trails between work and home, but I wouldn't be able to take the dog and then I would feel guilt.

I have the understanding, correct me if I am wrong, that trail running also makes you a faster runner when it comes to racing on pavement.

Also it generally builds up the stabilizer muscles, that will ward off injury, that you normally wouldn't from just running on sidewalks and such.

But whether I am wrong or not, I do enjoy running on the trails much more during summer and winter.

I do 99% of my running on trails, and I would agree with what you say.  It does make you faster and stronger on the road.  The only thing I would suggest is a few months prior to road racing do some LD on the roads, if you train mostly on trails.  The cushioning effect of the trail is never so evident as when you hit pavement.  You'll need time on the roads to get your hips and knees acclimated to the pounding.

I absolutely love trail running. In the summer I will drive to these trails by me and do a lot of my long runs on them. They are horse trails combined with mountain bike trails with lots of hills. I always see lots of deer, rabbits, squirrels and even a fox or two.

This time of year they are used for cross country skiing.

Can't wait for spring!

There is great reservoir across the street from my house, which leads into miles and miles of trails and hills of protected park property. The only problems I have are too many big hills, depending on which route I take, and no way of telling how far I ran. Do I just measure the time I ran? I know that running these hills in terms of miles will be much harder than running flats and mild hills. How would you calculate how far and how log to run in keeping with a beginners training plan?

Love the trails too...ran the perimeter gate on base the other day; good hills and a mix of terrain. Got lost and my two hour run became three; saw some deer and no people, so it was kewl.

Thats one of the reasons I wanted a GPS/Heart Rate Monitor. I'll have to wait to see how it works in the woods. Previously I has a couple loops that I could combine for different lengths. I used my the computer on my Cross Bike and rode the loops to figure out the lengths.

Great topic!  My dog and I run trails in Wilderness Park, a huge park that enters the city (Lincoln Nebraska) from the south and juts right into the heart of the city.  One major trail is a flat, mostly straight crushed limestone trail (old train tracks ripped out).  It runs probably twenty-five miles from downtown to a small town south, and will go farther soon (all the way to Kansas I heard).  Off of that major trail are multiple side trails into the woods and they weave in and out around a small river, over bridges and such.  We see deer, turkeys, foxes, etc. nearly every time we are out!   My dog can run with no fear of cars.

I even bought the Timex Trail Runner GPS/HR monitor to track speed, distance, altitude changes, etc.  It works well in the woods where my old GPS failed.  Trail runner shoes are a must too - the stability difference is tremendous.

It is so much better than running on concrete streets.  But for now I'm stuck on a treadmill. . . arrgh!

I love trail running, and have done a couple organized trail runs with a local group that marks the course well, and does the timing.   It's fun to pretend I am in a horror flick being chased through the woods...really makes the time fly!  Come on springtime!

For you other trail runners, (I *heart* trail running too) you should check out if there are any Hashing groups near you. It's a couple of hours of running in the woods (read: no set trails) with beer at the finish. I haven't done one yet (runs are every Saturday and I work that day) but I'm dying too. Check it out, it started in England with a "drinking club with a running problem."

Yeah, I'd love to find a hashing club. Sounds like it would be a fun time.
