Pre-race routine:

G and I drove over to Orlando on Friday night. We got there sort of late, Pete and Terri were already sleeping and Jess and Jeff were waiting for us. Said our hellos and all went to sleep. (Saturday) We all woke up with about 3 hours of sleep. Jess and Terri were doing the 1/2 and G, Jeff, Pete and I were the cheerleaders. We had so much fun cheering for them. Seeing Terri doing so well was the best feeling. I started getting tired. Being a jockstrap is tough work! After the 1/2 we went to the expo since I had still not picked up my chip and number for the marathon on Sunday. We had dinner in that night, got take out from carraba's. Jess, Jeff and I went to bed early and G stayed up and watched the Football games. (Sunday) 3am, rise and shine beautiful people :) Jeff, Jess and I headed to the race with a quick stop at 7-11 for the caffeine fix.
Event warmup:

lets see, warmup....bathroom line, dancing, and walking to the start.

Comments:

Jess, Jeff and I started off at a nice easy pace and slowly started picking it up. I think it was like mile 4 and we all had to go to the bathroom so we stopped at a group of pottys. We lost about a minute and a half so we started back on the course attempting to make up some time. At mile 6 Jeff was getting tight so he took off and ran at his pace with in 2 seconds I could no longer see him. Jess and I continued on to the Magic Kingdom and then to Animal Kingdom. Along the way we heard some ducks but I never saw one??? If you ever get the chance to race with Jess, DO It....a total blast! After leaving Animal Kingdom My knee starting really hurting and I was slowing down, I took some tylenol at the next medical tent. I was struggling to hang on to Jess who just kept getting stronger and faster as the miles progressed. I knew if I had tried to hang on, I would have been holding her back so I backed off to a pace that made my knee feel a little better. That was around mile 18ish....miles 19 thru 23 were a struggle but I felt like I was going to finish ok. I began to pick the pace up just a bit and the final mile I was able to pick it up again, with the crowds cheering all the runners on. I totally used the crowd, yelling to them and raising my arms up, cupping my ears as to say I can't hear you and that really got them yelling for us....I love the big crowds :) I finished with a full hearted sprint, it was full of heart and lacking speed. LOL
What would you do differently?:

I am going to really think about my next marathon prep. Nutrition will be a big priority for me at Gasparilla. I believe my knee pain is a result of poor flexibility and a muscular imbalance. The knee is the only thing that really slowed me down. Sure I was getting tired and all the usual marathon pain but this knee thing really affected the race outcome for me.
Post race
Warm down:

got a water, I was not hungry and all I wanted was a coke with ice! Made my way to the meeting area where I saw Jeff and Jess and to my suprise The Goddess was there! that was cool :) we sat around for a few minutes then went to the hotel to clean up. G had all the towels washed and folded for us with a water bottle for each of us...she is so sweet. We all took showers and went to breakfast and I finally got my COKE!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The knee!

Event comments:

I love this event, I will be back next year and doing the Goofy Challenge again :)

:Full of Heart..."

Racing is very much an emotional endeavour (Training is the Physical Part).

Getting out there with your friends and running a race like this is the coolest. Have to go and do this race someday. (Although it would be a vacation for me since I am not local)

Nicely done and take care of that knee
