Subject: Latex tubes?

OK...in the endless debate about tubulars vs. clinchers, it is pointed out that good clincher tires have less rolling resistance than comparable tubular tires. And tires with lower rolling resistance can make a big difference (12-13 minutes over the IM distance at 20mph, all other things being equal). So, in doing some research, I found that it's true (at least according to data generated by the folks at biketechreview.com. But...the interesting thing is, the low CRR numbers for clinchers are all generated when using latex tubes.

Now, I've always shied away from using latex tubes because of the perception that they are more prone to punctures and lose air pressure fairly rapidly. But with that data, I'm strongly considering giving them a go for races. BUt...I'm concerned about that puncture-prone thing, cause any gains you could realize from the lower rolling resistance could be negated if you get flats.

So...anyone use latex tubes? What's your experience?

I use 'em for racing only.  Since I also have tires just for racing, I figure something that punctures my tire all the way through is likely to puncture the tube--latex or butyl.  The only thing to remember is to fill your tires the morning of any race, because they do lose pressure faster (some of my butyl tubes can hold pressure for weeks).

They do lose pressure more rapidly than butyl tubes, but it's not like they're going to go flat on you in the course of an IM. We're talking about losing 10 psi over the course of 24 hours, not massive losses.

And from my experience, I didn't find them to be any more flat-prone than butyl tubes.

I run them in my race wheels and as other noted, just remember to check them in the morning before the race. Michelin version is a much better choice.... less quality issues.
