I think this will be my target Tri this year. I have never done a HIM before, but I think it is within reach based on my current training levels.

Who else is in?

I'm a maybe.  I did the Whirlpool Steelhead as my first HIM last year.  I haven't made my mind up which I'll do this year.  Steelhead is only a 45min drive, but Muncie has lower entry fee.  Definitely want to try the Muncie race at some point.

does this race ever fill up? I am probably going to be doing it but I not entirely sure (doing IMoo eight weeks later).

I will miss Muncie this year, it doen't fill up, so you can wait until the last minute to decide, but the longer you wait the higher the entry. It's a great race and well run good luck to all of you, I will be doing Steelhead this year and will do Munice in 09.

I am planning on traveling for a Duo (Alabama) this spring and then my normal Detroit race trip in Oct (not sure if I will do the half or full marathon this year), so I am looking to stay close for my HIM if I do one. I can stay at home for this race. I can be in Muncie in about 45 minutes from my house.

Plus it sounds like a good race. I just worry about the weather in July!!!!!!

:-)  I ride my bike to the reservoir from my house!  I love that it is so close.  Have also done OWS practice from the starting beach.  Very cool.  You can only train on part of the bike course (on the Greenway) because the majority of the bike course is on a pretty busy highway.  I rode it once and decided that wasn't too smart. (closed course during the race)

Anyway, yes, I'm going for it.  Did the swim and bike last year, so the next logical step is the whole thing.

This will be my first HIM and I' looking forward to it.  I'm following the 20 week HIM training schedule and hope it's enough.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

That's what I'm using but I'm going to add some long bike rides. Probably will add a little to the runs also. The plan is basically the minimums to get you successfully through a HIM.

Yikes!!! I can now sign up for the Endurathon as our conversion got pushed back a week. I don't have any excuses now!!! I think I'm going to give it a shot! I've hasitly put together a training plan and figuring out how I can get my nerves to calm for the swim!!! I need to 'HTFU'!!!

The swim's not that much more than an olympic distance swim, don't sweat it. I received a notice in the mail that even if I don't attend the required meeting on Friday, I have to pick up the packet on Friday. So what's a good hotel in Muncie?

There are several and unfortunately the closest one is about 20 minutes from the race site. There's Holiday Inn Express, Fairfield Inn, Lees Inn, Signature Inn. I'd pretty much stick with those and they're all in the same area.

for those that raced this last year, was the swim wet suit legal?  I've heard rumors that it typically isn't (and knowing Indiana in July could see that being the case)

I did the sprint last year there but yes it was wetsuit legal. The temperature in that reservoir fluctuates quite a bit. I wouldn’t count on it but it certainly is possible. My guess is that if that race would be at the end of June it would probably be wetsuit legal a lot more. We did several open water swims there from May to July and it was pretty cool on most of them even in June and July. It all depends on how this spring and early summer weather goes!

last year it was 79 degrees two days before and we had some cold nights and rain and it was 77 degrees race day, if it didn't rain I don't think it would have been wet suit legal. I would take it with me, but prepaired not to use it.

Kinda of bummed to hear the hwy is to busy in the area to take a ride on. Just came to the Indiana page to see if anyone does rides on the bike course in the spring or early summer? I had thought about making a road trip to check out the course, guess I won't bother now.

Is anyone familiar with the campground nearby ran by the City of Muncie? Made reservations there as they said it was right next door and it would make it easier for the family to come and go if needed.

I also have a reservation at the Signature Inn, but wouldn't mind saving a few bucks and being a lot closer to the race site.

TIA

I would not be comfortable riding the US 35 portion of the bike(which is most of the course). I used to be on the Del. Co. Sheriff's dept and some of the nastiest car/semi wrecks in the county are on this HWY. We do ride the greenway paved trail that runs along a good portion of the bike course so you could come down and ride it as the terrain would be almost identical. Shoot me a PM if you're interested and we could do a group ride if you wanted.

Don't cancel your Signature Inn reservations as the status of the park is up in the air right now and one of the issues is the campground. It may not be the best place if you're looking for a restful night's sleep the night before the race.

You might find it useful though to come down and check out the run course. It's not flat!! Several of us have been running it for the last several weeks just to get used to it...plus I live 20 minutes from there. I hope this info helps.

No, you don't want to ride on 35!  It would be almost the same route though to just use the greenway for that portion.  I did that once last summer to get dress rehearsal in before the event.  SR 36 was WINDY!

You mention the status of the park is in question, just curious how? Is the city in a bind looking to make up for budget shortfalls, etc?

Another thing when you mention restful nights sleep, is this some sort of trashy party all night kinda of campground with known problems? I need some locals insight, if theres problems I'll spend the money and hit the hotel. My wife will thank you too!

I can't say that I have ever stayed or camped out there, but in a purely biased, uninformed and probably prejudicial mindset, I'd say there at least a good chance most of the campers are not heading to bed "early" and might not be the quietest of neighbors.

Apologies if I offend.

Well, It's an interesting thing. The resevoir area is a Muncie City park however it's about 8 miles outside of the city limits. Muncie leases the grounds from the water company that owns it. Muncie just elected a new mayor in November. The former park superintendent was on the job for 30 years and she basically fired him and hired a new sup.

The new sup. just resigned this week after less than 2 months on the job. There are several issues which include the rental/transfer of piers on the lake and the campground which is often nicknamed 'springerville'. Couple this with the fact the Muncie is not in a very good financial situation right now and the new Mayor is looking for ways to cut the fat so hopefully the race will not be affected by this mess!!! There is another campground and Church within a mile from the race site which offers camping for the race. I think they are listed on the
Endurathon website.

I ran the run course yesterday and mapped it with my Timex. Here's a link to the route. The mapping software was a little off but my gps and truck showed exactly 13.1 miles. I showed 415 feet of climbing and the BT route manager showed 715...not sure why the big difference but trust me there are hills.

I e-mailed the RD to see if I could get out of the mandatory meeting on Friday, no response yet. Looks like the hotels are all booked up for Friday night, so I'm just going to drive down and back from Fort Wayne on Friday for the meeting and packet pick up, then drive back Saturday morning.
