No info on the 1/2 but I was up there today and did one loop of the sprint. Frankly, that was enough. One word - hills...
Now, I suck at hills so I'm not a good judge for the 1/2 triatheles but if you haven't had a chance to get to the course, practice hills.
I would recommend driving the course the day before if you are up there the day prior for your packet pickup so you get a visual of the hills. You can always look at the elevation cue but I think a mental picture of the actual hills will helpm psycologically on race day.
Good luck.

Brian I was also up there today and planned on doing the full 1/2 (bike portion). But like you said the hills were crazy. Unfortunately I train with no hills here in South Jersey and I got my a$$ kicked today. I managed to get in 32 miles and then put the wetsuit on and jumped in the COLD Choppy water. A few from our team did the full 1/2 (bike portion) and even ran for about 40 minutes after the ride.

Its going to be a long day two weeks from now.

I checked the cue sheet on CGI site and it looks pretty good from what I saw today.

I wonder if you were the person I spoke with today...I spoke to someone from NJ....

You guys doing the 1/2 are crazy. Kudos to you b/c those hills were too brutal for me for 56...

I'm still looking forward to it. Its a beautiful course but very challenging.

Its possible we spoke.  Did you do the ride with a camelback?  If so you were speaking to John and then I came over at the end (the heavier guy).  I think we had about 10 from SJ there today.  We did see a bunch of people riding the course today.

Hey, just wondering if anyone who's done BB can comment on the run course. What's the terrain like... flat? hills? I believe it's partly on trails & partly on paved road - is that correct? Haven't done much trail running this year...

Hey all.  I just registered myself for the Blackbear Sprint and have a place up at Split Rock.

I would LOVE to be able to meet BT'ers somewhere before the race (early morning) near the transition area to get a few minutes video interviews of BT'ers doing the race - then followup with some post race video interviews.  To put together a nice video segment for the homepage.

Let me know...we should have a BT banner somewhere near transition to meet.

Can't wait to see ya...

Hi Everyone! I am signed up to do the Black Bear as my first triathlon and am getting a bit nervous! I was wondering if anyone could tell me more about the swimming portion... I've always done open water swims where wetsuits usually "disqualified" you so I hadn't planned on wearing one. But, it's cold now!! I will probably rent a wetsuit for the weekend... Just wanted to see what most people do...

 Thank you!

A few from my tri team swam in the lake this past Sunday and I would highly recommend a wet suit.  The temperature was real cold and I don't think it will change that much in the next two weeks.  It was a little choppy also but not real bad.  Just very cold.

Thanks so much, Dan! Do you think a full suit is better or would I be okay sleeveless? I didn't see any rentals in that area (other than for rafting) so I am going to try a mail order rental unless I find a local store that has suits for rent. This should be an experience!

We did have two girls in our group with sleeveless and they were fine with that.  Good luck with getting the rental.

Ron,

Bring the banner and if someone has a tent they can bring up we'll give you a great location right in Tri Club Corner (I think they'll be as many BTers as any club has)!

See you up there!

Another thing about the swim.

From what I hear Larry is looking for a way to add some hills in the SWIM.  So don't be surprised if the swim course changes.

I'm kidding of course.

Here is someone's MB file from the course:

http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/2924586

Just keep in mind that is last years course.  There were some minor changes this year.

Swim is clean. Lake didnt really have any debris at all last year

Bike is tough. Hopefully youve done some hill workouts! If not, suck it up. Make sure you can change gears quickly and get yourself into a good climbing gear.

The run is tough also. Really no paved roads. Its all packed trails and grass. One big uphill about .5 mile in (sprint-not sure about 1/2). But make sure you did some hill work there also. And practice running on trails. It does make things different and can tire you out running on that stuff. They did change it a bit but should be about what it was last year.

All in all, its a tough sprint. No way around it. But, look at it this way, once you do this race, nothing is this hard. Ok maybe some out there, but this is an awesome first of the year or early season race because after this everything else is a joke.

I will be with my tri club after the race. Philly Tri has a tent there at the tri club corner. Stop by and check us out, we have a great club. Good luck everyone!

Hi Fred,

Z.

I mapped it out on BT's Route Tracker: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/map.asp?route...

A couple things about my map though:

1. For some reason, the map comes up in terrain mode. Just click on "map" at the top right to see the road map.

2. The out and back on Penn Forest Road doesn't go as far as I have marked on my map. The turn around is earlier than that. I missed it the first time I rode the course. Just after the turn around, the road begins to get rougher. It wasn't immediately obvious to me, but I figured it out eventually!

3. The way I mapped it out shows the end of the SECOND loop. The first loop is shorter.

Hope that helps!

p.s. the distances on the cue sheet on the BB website are accurate - so you could just follow that as well... I do better with the visual of a map, though.

BTW... I went up and rode the course today. There are now nice orange arrows marking all of the turns (except for the very last turn, from Jefferson onto Green on the second loop).
