Overall Rank = 12/153

Age Group Rank = 3/13
Pre-race routine:

Ate some breakfast and got my stuff together. I stopped by Sports Authority on the way down to buy those toe warmer things and put them in my road shoes and ended up not even using my bike shoes.
Event warmup:

I just tried to ride my bike around without crashing. I was only able to go about 8 mph comfortably until they came through with a plow and did a couple of laps on the bike course to scrape off some of the deeper snow. If it wasn't for them doing that it would have taken me forever to do the bike leg or I probably would of crashed. Right before the race started I got a helpful hint from Mark to just ride my bike with my running shoes and don't worry about switching shoes and clipping in. I was hesitant but I took his advice and it ended up working out well. I also brought 3 pairs of running shoes and did a quick run around the TA in the last few minutes before the race started to see which one I would wear for the race. I decided on my Cross Country Racing Flats because of the tread on the bottom and they are really light. I was worried about my feet being cold in them but they weren't.
Run
  • 10m 37s
  • 1.5 miles
  • 07m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt good on this run but once we got onto the trails it was a little harder to go fast. Once I caught up to the wave ahead of me it was tough to pass people on the side of the trail where the footing wasn't as good.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 1
  • 02m 8s
Comments:

This is the combo time for T1 and T2
T1 was slow for me. I was hesitating trying to decide if I was going to switch shoes and then decided to just keep my running shoes on.
T2 was also a little slower than it should have been. I took off after I racked my bike and realized I had my helmet on still so ran back and took it off because I was hot.
What would you do differently?:

Not forget to take off my helmet or just run in it like Dillard and Dime did.
Bike
  • 35m 48s
  • 9.9 miles
  • 16.59 mile/hr
Comments:

I was very cautious on the first lap. As we were going down the hill towards the loop this guy comes cruising up beside me on his mountain bike and then starts to fish tail and lays his bike down and slides off the road into a snow drift. I was glad that wasn't me. For some reason my hands were freezing on the 1st lap. I had to stop down by the tower for about 30 seconds or so to warm them up and pull my sleeves up over my hands to keep them warm. On the 2nd and 3rd laps my hands weren't cold and I was able to go a lot faster. I felt much more comfortable.
What would you do differently?:

I wish I wouldn't have had to stop to warm up my hands on that 1st lap, but other than that I was just glad I didn't crash.
Transition 2
  • 00m 58s
Comments:

This is T3.
This transition was a little better. I just stopped for about 10 seconds to get a drink.

What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 18m 5s
  • 2.5 miles
  • 07m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt pretty good on this run. There were some spots that were slippery and the trail had a lot of snow on it in most places. It was easier to pass people on this part of the run course.

Last sprint to the finish from T3 was 28 seconds.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Just had some

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My confidence on the bike wasn't good for those conditions especially on the 1st lap of the bike. This was really the 1st time I've ever ridden my road bike in the snow. On the 2nd and 3rd laps I started feeling a little more confident.

Event comments:

Overall a fun race and I would do it again.

Great race even with the freeze ups and helmet.  I was wondering what it was like out there...

I think you had a great race.  In no way did I kick your butt.  You held a strong run and the bike was just about staying up on two wheels at your comfort level.  Tough day and you did very well!

3rd in AG is great!  I think you are all crazy, biking in the snow   I wiped out last year on my bike at one of the CC races and decided it wasn't much fun.  Congrats on a great race!

Another strong performance! Way to go Kenny. You are making HUGE gains - compared to this time last year, you are ahead of the game... Keep it up!
