Pre-race routine:

Up at 5 am. Bowl of oatmeal, quick shower, and out the door. Glad to have gotten to the parking lot early, as traffic was backed up for at least 2 miles on the freeway. Got a good parking spot and just relaxed.

Comments:

First event I've done of this size. 10,000 people registered, and I'd swear they all showed up. Took 6 minutes from the time the race started before I even crossed the starting line.

First 2 miles was spent bobbing and weaving through all the walkers and shufflers that decided to start up front. I certainly am not fast, but today was non-stop passing people.

Finishers medal looks pretty damn cool. Overall, this was an absolute blast! I loved every minute of it. Can't wait to do it again up at Surf City in 2 weeks!!! :)

What would you do differently?:

Just got a slight cramp in my left hamstring while typing this up (2 hours after finish). Though I don't feel like I sweat an enormous amount, I can feel salt deposits on my face. I don't think I took in enough electrolytes. Good thing this was just a stand alone run.

Never needed them in my long training runs (10-14 miles), but next time, I'll be taking my electrolyte tablets just for safe measures and not depending on the small amounts of Gatorade.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

1. I think I need to work on increasing my cadence. I think I have pretty good stride length (feels natural at least), but just need to practice turning it over faster.

2. Need to learn how to consume fluids without slowing down so much. There's got to be a trick to this.

3. Can't blame my lower back strain/soreness really, as it was there, but I don't think it affected my run very much. Still, I think the mental edge of "knowing" I'm 100% healthy might of helped.
