Subject: Have you been sick (chronic coughing)??
Geez, is there something going around, or is it just me?? I have had a cough for about a month now. Antibiotics have been ineffective. Chest x-rays show brochial irritation. I guess it's viral since it's not responding to AB's. Sometimes it's productive, other times not. Some days it seems like it's going away, and then the next day it roars back and I'm sputtering and wheezing. Doctor is clueless. I'm getting really demoralized because it's very hard to run or swim like this (I can cycle okay on flats, but hills make my lungs seize up). I haven't trained effectively in almost 3 weeks now.

Is it just that time of year? (breathing cold air + some nasty virus)?

Is anyone else having trouble shaking this lung crud?? This is freaking me out.

It sounds like plain old bronchitis. Antibiotics are not recommened, and the cough can persist for 4-6 weeks while healing of the epithelial lining of the lung takes place.

Drink lots of fluids and catch up on your sleep.

And this knuckleheaded doctor has only been prescribing antibiotics (two cycles' worth, two different kinds). I thought the second-line AB's would nail this to the wall, but NOPE!! And now I've probably just set myself up for some nasty resistant superbug to take me out!! I am so mad with this doctor right now!

I had something like this a couple years ago, coughing and wheezing for several weeks with no response to antibiotics. I went back to my dr and he suggested that I might have allergies, since it was spring and had rained heavily in the preceding weeks/months. I have never had allergies to anything in my life. He told me to take Claritin and see if it cleared up, but before I got around to buying any Claritin the cough cleared up on its own. I never did find out what it was.

Sorry, I know this is not helpful in any way, except to tell you that one day it might vanish unexpectedly.

Indeed, the doc is right as always ...

For me, also, the fatigue keeps persisting even beyond the cough. But I am much better, and getting better, and you will, too.

So you're mad at the doc for giving you antibiotics or because you're still sick?  That's funny.  We usually get yelled at because we DON'T give antibiotics.

Just can't win.

Me too. And my roommate as well and she said that some of her friends have the same thing. It's been going on for about a month, but I haven't a cold or anything since early December. I feel otherwise fine; I don't feel "sick". It's just this persistent, nagging cough. I feel like I have chronic post-nasal drip. I'd chalk it up to allergies, except that I don't usually have any symptoms in the winter - just in spring (with all those dang cherry blossom trees) and the fall, cuz of mold and leaves, etc. It's nice to know that going to the doctor won't do anything for me and I just have to ride it out.

Actually, the only thing that seems to help is training - I'm not coughing while I swim or run. I was coughing a little bit while on the computrainer on Sunday, but not as bad as usual.

I had this cough a few months ago - my naturopath gave me some wicked homeopathic cough syrup that wiped it right out. However, it's also going around my school (natural medicine) and this was an email someone sent around a few weeks ago - everyone is claiming it's working, so worth a try:

Good morning to everyone. I got a very very bad
virus/cold. It lasted more than 2 weeks no matter what
I did - Wow! I have never had a virus that bad.
The coughing became so bad, I stripped something in my
throat. Finally found a natural remedy (cough syrup
recide) I would like to share with you all.
Hope this helps someone
Denise

For the adventurous and independent sort, here's a
homemade cough syrup recipe that really works. The
ingredients are a combination of spices and nutrients
with no unpleasant medicinal side effects -- no
drowsiness, no dry mucous membranes, no cautions about
using machinery or driving. It seems to work for all kinds
of coughs but especially for that dry hacky cough that
keeps you awake and hangs on long after the cold is
over.
One of our international students recently told me
that her mother in India used to give her a cough
medicine with similar ingredients.
It soothes an irritated throat and relieves chest
congestion and phlegm. The bad news: it tastes
terrible -- it really does -- but if you have a
persistant cough, it's worth it.
• 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
• 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
• 1 Tablespoon honey
• 1 Tablespoon apple cider vinegar
• 2 Tablespoons water
Mix and take by the teaspoon.
The recipe doesn't indicate how much to take. I took 3
teaspoons the first time because I had a bad dry cough
for over three weeks, and I was desparate for some
relief. It worked and I got a good night's sleep. I
have been recommending it to others ever since, and
many have confirmed my positive results.
I keep the mixture in the refrigerator after I make it
but I don't know if it is necessary.
The next time you have a cough that just won't quit,
you might want to give this homemade cough recipe a
try.

Had the same cough...worked out through it, and it lasted over a month. Finally went away when I was forced to rest and take off some time for my knee. My entire family got it, and it lasted forever.

I've seen lots of sick people with mostly viral illness consisting of cough and sore throat.  Most ilnesses are lasting weeks.

Bug got me also. I was out sick for a few days last week, I toned my training way down but only actually took a single day completely off, now it's still lingering around and with my training ramping up I feel like it's trying to make a come back on me. I'm trying to stick out for the rest of the week though because it's not too bad and I have rest week planned for next week anyway.

This seems kind of typical for me though, even when not in training. The last time I got really sick was about 5 or 6 years ago. Since then I will get sick once every winter like clockwork but it's always pretty mild and always drags out for weeks. It's really annoying. I miss the days when I was younger where I would get hit hard but it would be gone 3 days later. I can deal with being completely miserable for a short period much better than being moderately miserable for a long period!

I had the same symptoms in the spring (and am having them again now). After several visits of "it's just allergies" I saw one of the other doctors in the practice. She did some tests and told me I probably have exercise induced asthma (caused at the time by the cold water in the pool). I notice I cough a lot more after running in the cold. Like wurkit girl, the cough doesn't bother me at all while exercising - it's after that it bothers me. I took Advair for a while and it seemed to do the trick. Now that the cough is back I probably need to go in again and possibly get the Advair again. Just something else to think about if the cough continues.

I've had the same thing for at least a week now.  Every time I think it's going away, it comes back.  I set up a humidifier in the bedroom and that seems to be helping.  At least my throat feels a lot less sore in the morning than it did before.  Trying to take it easy and drink lots of fluids, but that's about the best I can figure at this point.

I am experienccing the exact same thing you are describing and it has kept me away from training for exactly two weeks. This Kennel Cough is driving me crazy and it is very demoralizing. The doctor just said that I have to let it take its course and I just have to rest and drink lots of fuids.

Being tired of not training, I think I am returning to the Gym tomorrow or the day after and see what happens.

Mine doesn't get worse after exercise. It's just kind of persistent. I sit at my desk all day and cough, even if I haven't worked out since the night before, as I am doing right now. I ran 3 miles last night, went home, hung out, went to bed and slept. Coughing again today, so I'd imagine that if it were exercise-induced, it wouldn't be happening 12 hours after I exercise. Plus, it started earlier in the month, when I was still slacking off

I'm on my 4th week. It's enough to be annoying but can still run and do stuff. Hitting the cold outside starts a nasty fit that lasts for about 20 seconds though. I feel fine other than the cough.

My wife, daughter and myself all have the same thing. It goes away and then comes back and seems to never end. A humidifier seems to help. Low intensity cycling helps it become more productive for me, but forget about any intervals.

Started with my youngest back around Thanksgiving (but he had an ear infection), then all the others in my family (wife, myself, and 2 other sons) got the cough.  My wife's and my cough (deep, dry congestive cough) is starting to clear up.

As someone else stated - plenty of liquids and rest.

Wow. Me too. First time ever that my only symptom was a cough. I've had since before Christmas. I took a week off-ish over the holidays and it seemed to improve, but I still have it lingering. Not enough to impact my training, but enough so that I was starting to worry. It seemed strange to me that the ONLY thing wrong was a cough, so then I started to get freaked out, like what if its something worse?

But hearing that you all are suffering through it, puts my mind at ease. Thanks!

Wow! Though I'm sorry to hear this is affecting so many, it's also good to know I'm not alone!! I ran seven rather slow miles yesterday and was able to maintain my breathing without too much coughing. This morning, I'm coughing again. Ugh.

I'm going to try the herbal cough syrup posted above. I don't want any more synthetics. I've also heard great things about Oregano Oil and have a bottle on the way..........

Good luck to all in shaking this thing. It definitely does suck for training!

By whom? Even hospitalized patients with pneumonia and open heart surgery "exercise" daily with the physical therapists and doing laps around the floors.
