Pre-race routine:

Left the hotel on schedule. Grumbled and complained about the rainy weather the whole drive to the shuttle pick-up point. Energy bar and water on the shuttle ride to the starting line.
Event warmup:

Walked the 1/2 mile or so from the shuttle drop to the starting line for the 5k. A bit of stretching while waiting for the marathoners to pass before the 5k start.

Comments:

I had very mixed feelings about doing this race today. My heart was with my family back in Tennessee due to the unexpected death of my brother-in-law on Thursday. I ended up deciding to go on and do the race since I wasn't able to make it back for the funeral yesterday. I thought it would help distract my mind from my thoughts for a while. Boy, it sure did that!

It was cold, raining, and windy. I ended up walking most of the course (started & finished running) rather than trying to do the walk/run intervals I had planned (still only on week 5 of the C25K). By the time I reached the finish line, I was soaked through from head to toe. All I could think about through most of the last mile was just getting to the finish line to try and get dry and warm!
What would you do differently?:

Heed the weather warning and be better prepared for inclement weather conditions.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around for about 5-6 minutes while waiting for a friend of mine to finish. After meeting up with her, we decided to forego the tent and post-race activities and just headed back to the shuttle. We wanted to get back to the hotel to shower and get into some dry clothes.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The wind. The rain. The cold.

What an accomplishment even making it to the starting line this morning. It was storming pretty bad and it took a lot of willpower to not just blow it off. Congrats to you......

Outstanding job, Miss Bunny! Good decision to mostly walk--it was a slogfest out there and something about the cold seemed to make a lot of people have leg cramps. You did great and super kudos to you for forging ahead despite the weather.

I am VERY proud of you!!!!!

I am so sorry to hear about the sad news in your family, and my thoughts and prayers are with you.

It takes real courage to get out and do a race in such nasty conditions, given the loss you just suffered.  Kudos to you on such an accomplishment!!

Great job on finishing completing the race!

Running and working out in general can be a great distraction to life at times, sorry for your families loss.

Great job out there

The 5k seemed to have it the worst since almost the entire course was on the weather side of PCH. Nothing but blowing sand/salt spray and rain the whole way

Sounds like this was a good tuneup race for you.

I would have SWORN I replied to this thread earlier, but I don't see it now.

Thanks, everyone.

Mixie - No, this wasn't my first race. I've probably done 20 or more over the years. My sister has MS and I've done the MS Walk for at least the past 14-15 years. I've done a few 10k races along the way, too. Everything has always been walking though, not running. I haven't actively done any running since I was a sophomore in college. We won't talk about how many years ago that was.

I figure I have my slow race out of my system for the year now. Hopefully I'll have a better time when I do the Carlsbad 5000 in early April.
