I haven't figured out how to balance it all yet. I tried doing full body Tuesday nights then running track after, but my legs were shot. Last night I swam in the AM, did abs and upper body PM then headed to track and that seemed to work well. However, I can't figure out when to get my leg lifting in so that it does not hinder my training. And, I can't figure out enough time to get full body lifting in twice a week. If anyone has any advise, I'd love to hear it! Also, I would not reduce upper body - especially core. It is important in swimming.

I do two days of a full body workout per week.  The program I use is the one in BeIronFit (even though I am not training for a full ironman this year).  Generally do a swim and then the weights, and that works fairly well.

If I had time for 3 days of lifting per week, I would do an upper/lower body split, working lower body on swim days and upper body on easy/shorter run days.

I just do a 1 set 8-12 rep full body workout.  1 exercise for each major group, except 2 for back and chest.  When I can do twelve, I add weight next time.   If you don't go to failure, but close, it seems like I am not too sore to train the next day.    It might take some experimentation.

I do triathlons for several reasons, one of which being to stay in shape as well as look like I am in shape plus I like throwing weights around once in a while. I use my own training plan i.e. at least 3 days per week of only upperbody circuit training 3x20 or 3x15 medium weight. I always try to add some abs but try not to overdo it. The way I look at it between running and biking the legs get enough, but I should add I hate leg workouts.

Just to back what some other people have said, I too have become quite a bit faster since I have incorporated weight training into my Tri training.

i know what you mean... reading articles, it says that especially lower body exercises are the most important for running and biking... figure it out then.
