Romney's supposed to announce shortly - like in a few minutes. But it still sounds like a lot of speculation and rumors.

It ain't over 'til it's over!

UPDATE:

Halperin says three sources have confirmed that the former Massachusetts governor will drop out as early as this afternoon, when he addresses the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C.

I'm happy for that. I'm a moderate and I like McCain a lot more than Romney.  Obama/McCain or Clinton/McCain?  Either way it will be interesting.

time for Mitt to strap the family dog on top of the car and head home.

i was hoping to see him spend another $40 million of Tagg's inheritance to win a few more delegates. maybe if he had lived in more than just three states, his home-state strategy would have paid off.

oh well. now he'll have time to re-read his favorite book, "Battlefield Earth."

It's true.  He is about to announce at CPAC.  This is fallout from the large numbers of Republicans who are fed up with the way Bush is running the party into the ground.

True... But the guy has spent a disproportionate amount of money to the other candidates with little result.

Yup, and much of it his own money. With Rush and cabal railing against McCain, you'd think they'd put their $$ where their mouths are and do something to raise funds for Romney.

My caveat had more to do with not wanting to prematurely prognosticate, kinda like the Super Bowl.

My nephew will be very disappointed. He and his buddy were planning on filming a Romney flip-flop, doublespeak spoof this weekend and post it on youtube.

Will McCain and Huckabee suspend their campaings next? Might as well save the $$ for the real battle to come.

Romney was far from an ideal candidate, but the choices that remain just leave me physically ill.

I can't even believe I'm going to have to vote for McCain simply because he's the lesser of two lousy options, no matter who the wins the Democratic nomination.

X2, only I'm not sold on Mccain by default just because he semi-republican.   Once again we'll have nobody worth voting for next november.

What now for Huckabee? I would think the Republicans would want McCain to gain as much momentum as possible going into the general election.

Anyone else surprised/worried that we are already down to 4 candidates and the election is still 9 months away?

A little too fast for me.

Huckabee already has a running mate... Steven Colbert. Why wouldn't the Republican's want that duo?

I think Huckabee is campaigning for a prime-time spot on Comedy Central. Not so much for POTUS.

It will be interesting to see how this affects the weird lovefest between McCain and Huckabee. With the momentum that Huckabee picked up on ST, it's not completely unfathomable he gets back in the race enough to at least make it interesting. But to do that, Huckabee will have to start taking some shots at McCain-- so far he's been less than willing to do that.

I could actually live with a Huckabee/McCain ticket, just not the other way around.

Looking at a calendar it may be sooner, but in reality we have more candidates at a later stage in regards to states having gone through the primary phase then we have in quite some time.

Four years ago Bush was uncontested and Kerry was the clear choice on the Dem side by the end of "Super Tuesday". Eight years ago it was clearly Bush and Gore by this stage.

It looks like the Dem choice won't be decided until the convention this year.

I agree but if it ends up McCain/Huckabee we can just wait for McCain to die and get Huck in as Prez

McCain isn't a young man and things happen to people all the time. I believe Pope John Paul I was only in office about 50 days.

Yes, I'm kidding.

I would never recommend that anyone take any of my advice.
