I'm extremely fond of LA. I train year 'round...the mountains, the ocean, the desert, lots of wide flat streets (and hilly ones, too) for cycling, etc., etc., all within short drive. Traffic sucks and it isn't cheap, but otherwise I think it's a really special place to live if you like diverse outdoor activities.

Ditto. Also, if you go inland a bit, you have all the convenience of these things nearby, but not nearly the cost. Traffic still sucks. (What do I know, though, I bike everywhere )

Never lived there, but San Diego seems really nice, and a tri mecca.

I'm new to tris, so I'm not sure about that part.  As far as boating and fishing.. you have the Chesapeake Bay and all of the waterways that come off of it.  Camping is OK in MD, but West Virginia isn't too far away and the camping there is great!  Mountain biking.... the area is good for that too.

The winters aren't as bad as Kansas City, but it still gets pretty cold.  Sometimes snowy, but usually not too bad.  I like the changing of the seasons so I really like this area.  I think I'd prefer somewhere that was warmer all year long, though, if I didn't enjoy the seasons

Miami, Fl. The tri season starts in Feb. and runs through to Nov. as long as you train early or late in the hot times.

Crested Butte might not fit the criteria for "winters that don't stink" at least in the sense of doing anything besides boarding or skiing.   They have gotten over 20 feet of snow this season!  That aside, CB is awesome

Dude, what's wrong with Kansas City?

I think this is a great place to live. Lots of parks, places to ride just outside the city, plus traffic really isn't as bad here as other big cities... and at least we haven't gotten as much snow/ice as places up north. But if I was going to move, I would seriously consider Austin or San Antonio. Or maybe the Tampa/Clearwater area.

Here in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, I find that the snow and subzero weather keeps the mosquitoes down.  If you like snowshoeing, some of the best hockey, cross country skiing, Granite Peak.com downhill, Check out North Central (Wausua) Wisconsin.  Remember, 11 months of good sledding, and 1 month of bad sledding.

Suprised no one has brought up where I just transfered from, Oahu. I can't stand the place anymore but you can't ask for a better place to live if you want to train year around. Be prepared to pay for it though.

Central VA is great for those things. They've got the best State Parks in the country, GREAT state higher education). Camping, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, are all great here. The winters are cold enough that there is a distinct winter, but not so cold that you can't get in a bunch of outside rides in Dec, Jan, and Feb. I've only lived here for 1 fall, and most of 1 winter. Take my thoughts with a grain of salt. There's lots of great countryside to ride through.

ya.. I'm gonna have to vote for San Diego as well.. or even better Coronado.. or does that count as the same ? I live in San Diego for a spell in the '80's and miss it terribly .. the weather.. the people.. and the sports .. everywhere there was something to do .. now stuck in NYC - while not bad.. winter has been/ can be a total downer..

x2...Maryland is great. Lots of variation for tri stuff- Eastern shore is FLAT and there are the mountains and big hills of the western part of the state, and it's only a few hours from one side to the other. And love love love the Chesapeake. Annapolis is a good in between of small-city life and is still right on the water and laid back.
