What part of NC are you in?  Setup Events and Finish Strong are the two major players offering races in NC.  Their sites should give you a great idea of what's out there.

Welcome to NC. I'm biased, but check out Inside Out Sports in Cary (I work in the Charlotte store). They will be more than happy to help you with anything you need. Tell 'em Keith sent you

Also, there are a few tri clubs in that area that I'm sure will help you along. http://usatriathlon.org/Clubs/FindAClub.aspx

My suggestion is to start slowly and try losing some weight at the same time. No need to jump into a race right away. This should be a lifestyle not a check mark on the calendar.
Having said that you are in a great area to find races. Check out the links the others posted.
Good Luck.

I'm doing the same thing :-) I did my first season last year in Minnesota. Things to remember: You can do whatever stroke you want for the swim, and you can walk the run if you need to!

Welcome to NC, I am a displaced northerner also from NJ. I am going to be in my first Tri in May. It is in China Grove NC and is a Super Sprint. 250 yard pool swim, 12 mile bike and a 5 K run (or really slow jog in my case lol). You can find information on this event here

http://www.allsportrunning.com/EventInfo.cfm?EventID=18747

Godstock events are well run and for a good cause, good luck.

If you live in Cary then Setup Events (http://www.setupevents.com) is definetly one series you should check out.  I was stationed at Pope for 4 years and I did Setup Events tri's for the last two of those years.  Top-notch organization.

They have a good mix of Sprint and Olympic distance tris and they've even added a HIM and IM distance later this year.

I am not new to NC, but new to the idea of training & completing a triathalon. I, also used to be quite athletic, but have gained some weight after having children & not made enough time for myself. I'm dedicated to getting back into the game, but don't really know where to start. I was thinking I would aim towards my first attempt at the White Lake event in Sept. I've looked over some of the training plans, but would appreciate any other advice, ideas, motivation, etc. Thanks...newbie in Eastern NC

Welcome,
I am in Apex! I agree with the SetUp Events web site recommendation. I also rely heavily on the Endurance Magazine. It is available free at lots of public places, (gyms etc) or it is really cheap for a subscription. Here is the web site and you might not even need a subscription.

I personally love the Tobacco Trail and jogging around Lake Pine.

Best of luck to yoy

Here is a great tri for beginners: http://www.eteamz.com/GaryKirbyTriathlon/index.cfm? It is June 7th in the Bedford neighborhood in Raleigh. I did it last year and probably 3/4 of people were doing their first tri.

The website probably tells the story better, the family of a triathlete, named Gary Kirby, that died of cancer puts on the event to raise money for cancer research. Last year several of his family members raced, as did his doctor. I think the 4 y/o kids at one of the water stops were his grandkids.

It has a couple drawbacks; transition was just in a parking lot with no bike racks, so we had to just lay the bikes down. Its a 4 loop bike course, try not to lose count. The advantage is you are never too far away from the finish line and spectators can see you several times.

Everyone is easy going and very helpful. Its a very inspiring and uplifting race.

Cool!  More New Yawkuhs here in NC!!!  What part of NY do you hail from?  I was born down on the Lower East Side.

Next to San Diego, Boulder, Co, NC has got to be the third biggest triathlon area in the country.  Two places to check out to become totally addicted...

www.setupevents.com  That's where you'll find all the races.  Some of the sprints sell out in a few hours so be mindful.  The triangle sprint is a good race and close to you.

www.insideoutsports.com  One of the best triathlon shops in the country is right there in your new hometown!  Great people, HUGE selections, one of the biggest tri-shops in the country.

Welcome and enjoy!  Laughing
