Extreme Veteran 341 Fort Worth, TX | Subject: Dallas Athletes St. Patricks Day Sprint Ok, I'll try to start the thread for this race. This will be my very first Tri and very excited. Has anyone on BT done this one before? Looking for any course hints, etc...

Champion 5575 Butler | Subject: RE: Dallas Athletes St. Patricks Day Sprint smeador - 2008-02-08 1:36 PM I did this race last year and the Monster Tri twice (all the same course). Ok, I'll try to start the thread for this race. This will be my very first Tri and very excited. Has anyone on BT done this one before? Looking for any course hints, etc...
Scott The swim is obviously in a pool so no mass start which is nice for first race. Depending on your pace fudge it alittle and give them a faster time than you can do (:15 secs or so). For one you will be excited and can probably swim faster than you think and second it is easier to be passed than to pass in a pool. Learn to flip turn if possible as you have to go under the ropes after each length and it definately makes it quicker. The pool is huge and you can go 3 wide if needed so you have plenty of room. Depending on where you normally swim try and find a deep pool to swim in if you are a beginner swimmer. The first time I swan there I paniced for a second when I jumped into 12 ft deep water and was used to 4 feet deep. The bike course is 2 loop around a big square with rolling hills. My only hint is make sure you do 2 loops. A few people each time only do 1 and get DQ'd. You really do get any completely flat ground either except on the way to the loop. You are either on a slight (very slight) incline or decline. The bike is pretty simple though. Run in on an enclosed concrete trail. Completely flat and fast. It is out and back so you pass alot of people for encouragement. Only 1 water stop that you hit twice if needed. Transitions are assigned rack by a number range (100-120 on 1 rack, 121-140 on another, etc) if you want an end spot get there early as you really only have 2 available to you. I think these races are a blast especially for a first race. I probably never would have attempted a tri unless I could have done one in a pool. Have fun and good luck. BTW, here is the link to the bike course (only 1 loop) but you should get the idea. Edited by kproudfoot 2008-02-08 1:50 PM |

Champion 5575 Butler | Subject: RE: Dallas Athletes St. Patricks Day Sprint smeador - 2008-02-08 1:52 PM No problem. PM me if you have any questions. Alot of people on here have raced this course so I am sure other's will chime in. Really the bike course is not all that challenging and others have said there is nowhere near the amount of climbing the route tracker shows but I have no idea. In my mind if I can' t see over the hill I don't like it.Thanks for the information. It's already helping me thing it out!!!

Master 1831 Keller Tx | Subject: RE: Dallas Athletes St. Patricks Day Sprint This was my first ever race last year! Its my home race, as we live in Keller, and ride most of the routes frequently. Ken is right that the bike course is not at all difficult. There are a few "inclines", not really hills since they don't last more than a minute or two to get up. the roads are in great condition, so its plenty safe. The run is on the trails in Bear Creek Park. We run there multiple times per week. There are only 2 small bumps on the trail, one shortly after you get onto the trail, and one shortly before the turn around. If it weren't for IMAZ this year, i'd be doing it again! Member 42 Denton, TX | Subject: RE: Dallas Athletes St. Patricks Day Sprint Hey everyone. This particular race is also my first tri. As far as the swim goes, I have been swimming at a fairly shallow pool (4ft) at my local 24hr fitness. Is there a local pool (I live in Denton; not too far from Keller) that I can practice in a few times that is the same as the one in this race? Is the Natatorium pool available for practicing? Also I saw that someone mentioned kick turns. I was under the impression that these were not allowed. I've been practicing them somewhat but not too much since this was my understanding. Also want as much info as possible on this course. Unfortunately when I signed up for this race, I put my 300m time as it stood over month ago, and it's since drastically improved. How will this affect me during the race? Edited by colemanford 2008-02-11 8:53 AM |

Master 1831 Keller Tx | Subject: RE: Dallas Athletes St. Patricks Day Sprint If they run the race the same way they did last year, you'll be lucky enough to have an entire lane to yourself each direction. There were no head on collisions, and that would make using a flip turn very easy. |

Member 42 Denton, TX | Subject: RE: Dallas Athletes St. Patricks Day Sprint Another quick question. I'm looking at purchasing a set of Profile Aerobars for the ride. How necessary are these for a first time tri-er for this particular race. I have an older Cannondale road bike and was thinking of adding these for a little more edge. Thoughts/Suggestions? I won't spend the money right now if you guys think it's not necessary at this point in my beginner triathlon career. |

Veteran 241 Houston, Texas | Subject: RE: Dallas Athletes St. Patricks Day Sprint Don't worry about the aerobars unless you think that you have a reasonable shot at placing in the top 3 of your age group on your first tri. (pun intended) Aerobars take practice to use properly and that time and money, at least at first, can be better used doing extra laps in the pool. |

If you have time to ride on before definately get them. I just bought new ones at performance bike in plano for around a C note. |

Master 1292 McKinney, TX | Subject: RE: Dallas Athletes St. Patricks Day Sprint Clip on aerobars will help you save your legs on the run. You'll be more aero, so you'll be faster. However, if you don't already have clipless pedals on your bike, I would get them first. |

As of this morning, 2/24/2008, the webpage indicates approximately 100 slots still remaining. I've done a pool swim event several times, what are they doing for start intervals - 5 seconds, 10 seconds? Just wondering.

Master 1831 Keller Tx | Subject: RE: Dallas Athletes St. Patricks Day Sprint We are not doing the race, but we plan to go, since we live in Keller, and this is right in our backyard. A good meeting spot that is definitive in the facility is the steps. there are 2 sets of steps as you walk into the door. Figure the right set of steps, as it will probably be cold in the morning, and everyone will want to be inside before the start. |
