Sedona Marathon - RunMarathon

Sedona, Arizona
United States
62F / 17C
Sunny
Total Time = 5h 36m 28s
Overall Rank = 139/153
Age Group = 40-45
Age Group Rank = 8/17
Pre-race routine:

Breakfast of a Bannana, plain doghnut, lemonaid vitamin water and a Redf Bull. Room was across the light from the start line so walking to race was not only an option, it was probably closer than most were able to park for the event.
Event warmup:

General wandering about the middle of the highschool track as it was 28 at the start.
Run
  • 5h 36m 28s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 12m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

I was actually on a great pace and past mile 13 at 2:17 and was feeling good considering the hill workout that I was getting. Unfortunately for me I got a charlie horse in my left calf just past mile 15. Thinking that a little electrolites and walking it out, I slowed for an uphill walk while forcing my foot to relax. Too bad I must have lost my man card at that point as I never gained the motivation to run again. I spent most of the next 11 miles walking or jogging on the downhills.
What would you do differently?:

I think that I need to look into salt tabs or other such items as the sports beans, bananas, and GU did not do the trick for me. However, I nowe have a base time and can only get better from here. Still not excited by marathons the way runners are, but know that I can survive it now and will do this race again next Feb 2009!
Post race
Warm down:

Walk back to the condo and took a cool/cold jetted tub bath while sucking down a chocolate shake!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Drive after a walking spurt - the ability to get going to speed again.

Event comments:

The race was great and I finished my first marathon. Any failings were my own and based upon lack of continuing drive. That said, I will still be there next year and think that 4.5 hours is a mark that I can hit a year later.

Any failings were my own....

Well, there weren't any. You did the distance. You're a marathoner!!!

Sheesh! It's your first one. You're a BIG dude. That means more than you think as a runner. The amount of energy it takes you to travel over 26.4 miles is huge!

A first marathon is just that...A first. It's a trial to see what it's like and what to improve on. If I finish my first marathon in 24 hours, I'll shi_t happiness!!

Congratulations!!!!!

Yeah yeah!

You completed the marathon that is all that matters at this point. I walked half of my first one as well. I could not kick start the running muscles after walking for a bit.  I'm sure the hills were not friendly on the second half.

Congratulations, Jerry!!!!!  Don't criticize yourself for having to walk for a stretch.  You put in a great effort and FINSHED - you're a marathoner now.  Be very proud of what you have accomplished!!!

Way to go!!!! You DID IT!!! In my first, my shoes "died" at about mile 20 and my feet felt like there was broken glass in my shoe. I didn't move at faster than a shuffle the rest of the way (including down hills). But I finished that one and you finished this one! Sounds like a fun race. Maybe we can do this one together next year.
