Subject: Dumb question about pull bouy use.

Today was the first time that my swim plan said to use a pull buoy. I had never used one before and I wasn't sure how to use it. My YMCA has the kind with two cords holding them together. The first time I tried using it I attempted to hold the buoy down near my ankles and well that didn't seem to work well. The second time I tried to use it I tried moving it up to between my thighs but that still didn't seem right. Maybe I am just not used to using them and neither will "feel" right until I get used to it, I don't know.

It goes right up there near the boys.  Hold it in place with your thighs

sorry, but i kinda laughed when i pictured you with a buoy at your ankles.

But the straps between your legs, all the way up. One part of the bouy will be behind your legs, right under your rear, other other part of the bouy right below your...um...you know.

Glad I could give you a good chuckle for the day. Hey I learn something new every day in this sport and today was no different. I will say that it was pretty awkward with the damn thing near my ankles...

You can actually work out like that too but with a small inner tube (wheel barrow size) wrapped aroung your anklesin a 8 shape. This makes it harder to cheat and kick.

As long as we keep learning something new everyday, we will keep improving everyday

keep up the good work

I've seen people with kickboards between their legs.
THAT was a laugh.

They go between your thighs. There used to be a style that you could adjust the distance between them by shortening the cords. I don't know if those are the kind you have. Getting them right for the first time was tricky as I recall

Actually, a kickboard between the legs is a great training tool to practice alignment and hip rotation. I have used 1/2 a board with an inner tube to hold it in place.

BTW - I find the pull buoy near my ankles after a lot of pull sets, it just slips down. They take a while to get used to but are a great training aid.

x2 also a kickboard is a helpful substitute if you don't have a pull buoy with you

I think it is possible to have the bouy too close to your crotch when swimming.  If you can still kick and control body roll easily with your legs, then I think it is too high.  Also it should be adjusted for the amount of floatation you require to stay level in the water.  If your feet tend to sink then move it down, if you level out easy them you can move it up.

Comfort has to play a factor there as well.

When I use one it is normall at or just above my knees.

I'm right at the knees too.  It is just wherever it needs to be to keep your legs floating in line with your torso.   I guess if you had size 18 triple wide feet, you might need it at the ankles.

Ha.  I don't think the water aerobics ladies can look at you weird whilst doing water aerobics.

I've done the kickboard between the legs for a 50 of kick/pull. Kick down with the board, then stick it between the legs for a pull back, or else you dont have the board for your next 50.

Pull Bouy is like swimming with a wetsuit.

I actually prefer to get one of those huge dumbbells and hold it with my feet. Keeps my body nice & level and I only lose about 5 seconds per lap vs. no buoy. The pull buoy between the legs just doesn't support me as well [I'm 6'2" 195 for reference]

What IS the point of a pull buoy?  I used one today for the first time, had it between my legs but I think I kicked and swam normally.  So, don't kick and don't let your hips rotate?

Just a note. I never use a pull bouy. I find it awkward and puts my body in an unnatural position. I also don't use paddles because I found they put too much stress on my shoulders. I think I am an exception and most people would recommend you learn to use them.

Didn't know that. Regardless, these were people who couldn't swim AT ALL. I don't think they were working on their alignment or hip rotation; they couldn't even do a 25.

I'll second this question. I didn't kick at all with the buoy either time I used it and I was swimming only with my arms. It was defenately harder than normal swimming and my rotation was not nearly as good with the buoy and without it. It was a nice break and change of pace but I don't think I will be using it very often.

I don't use paddles at all. I have heard to many things about them putting stress on shoulders if you don't have good form and I am sure that my form isn't that great. I really do need to break down and maybe take a lesson or two, but I am still making progress both with speed and with my endurance so right now I am pretty happy with things.
