Subject: My ride on the Kona course today

We've been on the Big Island for a week now (some pictures in my album here ), and today was my day to rent a bike and do a long ride on the Kona course. Started out great, cruising along the Queen K, and then only 8 miles in I apparently ran over a staple and got my first flat that I've had in over a year.

No problem, I had a spare tube - unfortunately I broke the valve stem off the new tube while trying to attach my inflator. I then tried to use the patch kit the bike had given me, but it would not hold.  The picture below shows a pretty pissed off rider considering throwing the bike into the lava as a tribute to Normann Stadler....

So I started walking the 8 miles back to Kona, wearing just my cycling socks on some very warm pavement.  After about a mile some guy rode by and offered me a tube, so we fixed it up and I took off again, only to flat a mile later. While standing there looking at my flat another guy rode by and told me that there was another bike shop just "a little way" up the side road just ahead, so I started walking. 30 minutes later I arrived at the shop. The mechanic and I fixed my tire (had a pinch flat - I guess I was rushing the last repair), and I rode back to where I had left my car in Kona. 3 hours, 16 miles of riding.  On the plus side, it was sunny and 82 degrees, not 15 and snowing like at home today, so at least I had that going for me.

I headed back out this afternoon and put in another 25 miles (would have done more but I had to get back for some evening plans). The Queen K lives up to its reputation as being pretty warm and very windy. The course itself is not that bad as far as hills - not flat, but no big climbs (except at the turn around at Hawi which I did not get to).  Some more shots from the course:

By the airport:

There are some really long, wide open stretches...

The white coral on black lava rock messages are everywhere along the course:

It's not all lava fields - the ocean views are awesome...

So in the end it was an interesting day, but still a fun experience to have been riding where the greats of our sport have become legendary.  Of course, it would all be worth it to end up here:

I guess it's time to ramp up the Lake Placid training.

Aloha Rob,
Welcome to Kona. I ride Queen K every other day and there are times I get one or two flats a day. Fortunately, I've only had to walk once and that was only a mile (2 flats in one mile).

I always care two tubes and plenty of patches. But as you experienced, there are always goodwill riders coming by offering help.

I finally had to purchased some Mr. Tuffys and have only had one flat since. Queen K is notorious for flats. I hope while you're here, your other rides go well for you.

That's what everyone was telling me today, that flats are a way of life around here. When I went out for the afternoon ride I took two tubes.

You are very lucky to be able to live and ride here - tomorrow I'll be running down Ali'i and doing a short swim out to the end of the swim buoys before catching my flight back to the mainland. Aloha!

Amazing pictures Rob~

To bad you had all the flats but very kind of strangers to help you out.

Lucky you flying home to this cold, windy NE weather. Yep time to get cracking IMLP is just over 5 months away.

Have fun running and swimming in Kona and safe travels home~

Awesome!  I'm gonna be in Kona this June.  Can you tell me where the bike rental place is relative to the cruise port?

Hey Rogilio I hope you weren't scheduled on NCL Pride of Aloha. That is pulled from Hawaii Service in May. NCL has pulled 2 of their 3 cruise ships, although it is great for the environment the impact on local economy is really tough.

OP - glad you encountered people willing to help. It is so easy to forget that good people are around.

Mike - I'm not sure where the cruise ships come in exactly, but the shop is probably less than a mile from the pier.

Aaron - that's funny. The bike did look pretty well used, but still was a nice ride, at least when there was air pressure in the rear tire .

Great stuff, Rob - you sonofabnitch!

JK - Looks like a wonderful time. I honeymooned there a few years ago when I barely knew the significance of Kona. I checked out the pier, but missed the official start sign.  I wasn't even positive I was in the right place except that "dig me beach" looked familiar.  Safe travels!

You would not believe how many flats our group had the week we were there. As a matter of fact, I got the same staple-type object in my tire on my 100 miler and got a flat. My second one of the trip. We saw whales out on the Queen K...awesome riding.

Pissed my wife off when I was stationed in Hawaii by insisting that when we went to the Big Island, just before transferring, we fly into Kona. Sole purpose was to drive the Queen K and see the start/finish line. Got some nice pics at homebut man is it a long drive from there to KMC and the other side of the island. Hopefully someday I will go back to do the race!!

Forecast for Valentine's day in Kona is High of 81 and Low of 67 with full sun. Same as today, although it was cloudy most of the day. Welcome to the Big Island Badnews. Hope you enjoy your stay. BTW there's an informal group swim on Sunday mornings at 8 at the pier. Sometimes Bree Wee joins in. She's the IM record holder for the women age groupers and probably one of the fastest swimmers out there.

The group usually swims half the Ironman course. Not unusual to be joined by a pod of dolphins.

Safe travels

That would be awesome to ride. I doubt I'll ever make it there, but it's nice to dream.
