Who is in for 2008? In order to get my wife into this, I'm doing it as a relay this year.

Does Jockstrapping count?  2 Friends are doing it, I feel like a tri-snob saying that this one is too short for me.  Although I'd LOVE to swim in that 50m pool again, and chuckle when I see timing chips on the bottom of the 18' pool.

It was my first tri-ever last year, so if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask here or PM me.  I'm so tempted to do it, just because the Aquatic center at Eisenhower is such an awesome place to swim.  But I need to balance family with races.

This was my first TRI ever last year and was a great experience.

I learned not to spend 3 mins in T1 drinking water and drying my feet :-)

This event gave me the TRI Bug. I'm going to sign up because this is my ALMA MATER :-)

Ok....... it was my first TRI and I felt this gave my the official Triathlete stamp !

I look forward to actually swimming the entire pool freestyle this year as opposed to my many compinations of survival skills used last year.

They do allow you to warm up in the pool and I recommend it, because not many of us train in a 50m pool and the distance was quite intimidating.  Doing a 200-300 warmup alleviated any fears I had of actually making it to the other side.  I'd also suggest seeding yourself a bit faster in the swim than you think you're capable of so you won't have to pass that many people, let the faster ones pass you.  Is this the right way to do it? No. In a perfect world would everyone be honest. Yes. I seeded myself in the 7:30-8:00 group and I completed the 400m in 8:01, so I was pretty dead on.  The problem was with the 12-15 people I had to pass.  Granted some could have had an off day, others were just plain dreaming.

I’m in !

Motivation is paying the entry Fee…Tim thanks for providing the spark!

Last Year I seated myself in the 9-10 min group and finished @ 10min, but it was a obstacle course along the way – some passing me & I was passing others. Granted I was a Newbie last year and I could barley swim 400 meters without going into an “alternate” technique. I must say all the participants were all VERY friendly and this made for a great day.

Only 5 months until the NYC TRI……I need to get motivated.

I'll be the unofficial race photographer for you guys, provided I'm not too busy keeping my 3 year old off the course.

Registering definitely is the spark! If I sign up for a race, I'm sure to train for it.

Taking Photo's ? Going for a haircut and I'll have her toss in a few hightlights :-)

Last year that 50 meter pool FREAKED me out. It's not like you can stand in a the deep end of the 25 meter lanes, but looking all the way down in the deep end - WOW.

See you all BTers there !

This is a pretty funny thread!  I was originally going to leave my two-year-old and four-year-old at home, but heck, it may spice things up if I bring them!

I read your race report, 1st Timer, and it was very inspiring.  Way to go with quitting smoking and getting to running!

Question?  Exactly how do we snake through the lanes during the swim?   Do we go under lane dividers?  Do you grab onto the wall and then push off into the next lane?

Yup, that's exactly what you do.  I noticed some people go under the rope then turn around and push off.  I usually went to the wall in my lane, pushed off and then went under the rope.  To each their own, I don't know which way is faster/more efficient.  There was usually a small crowd at each turnaround anyway.  Check out my albums, you'll see the crowd at the wall.  If they go with same format as last year, the lanes are more than wide enough to allow passing within the lane.

Again, I'd encourage anyone who has yet to swim in a 50m pool to do a few warmup laps before the race to get used to the longer distance.

A bit nervous about the 50m pool. Is there any way to get access to the pool before the Tri, for a swim session? I hate being unprepared!

Hey MSailer -
This was my 1st TRI last year and I had a blast. The pool is open at anytime for use. You need to pay a small fee each time you go. For the most part only the 25 meter lanes are open for Lap Swimming. I actually enjoyed going 50 meters without stopping, however the "view" in the deep end can freak you out a little bit when your first see the "abyss".

I'm ithcing to do a race and my first isn't until Memorial Day....maybe I should try and beat last years time at this event. (It was my first ever tri in 2007 as well).

Check the link above your post.  They only release schedules 1 week at a time.  However, it does say that Long Course (50m) is available Mon, Tues and Wed, changing to 25m on wed night.  (Unless there is an event, then they keep it at 25m).

Bike is just 3 loops on a 2 mile loop.  Basically you go down a park road for 1 mile make a U-Turn and go 1 mile, U-turn repeat x 3.  One tip I will have for anyone who hasn't done this race.  Race all the way to the finish (seems obvious enough), but due to the TT starts, you can actually be beating someone who is ahead of you, yet losing to someone who is behind you.

With that said, I'm thinking of bailing this race in favor of a long training day.  I figured out I will be away from home for approx 5 hours and last year this race took me about 51 minutes.  It's not too often I get 5 hrs to train (Long ride/run brick)  I'm 50/50 right now....don't get me wrong it is a fun race and that Pool is spectacular!!
