I love hearing about other peoples 'success stories' - i find it very inspiring....

please tell me your personal experiences about 'where you started compared to where you are now'. I'd love to know how you have progress in regards to speed/endurance with any of the three disciplines. Also if you have improved in your 'placement standing' at the events you have done - would love to hear about that too!

thanks so much - Jill

A year and a half ago, I struggled to run a mile straight. I had a breathing disorder (VCD) which made it very difficult to workout. I began therapy to overcome it. I then started running, mile at a time. My 1st 15k was very tough, I finished in 2:02,, over 13mm. My 1st 1/2 marathon I finished in 2:48, I haven't raced a 1/2 since then, but hope to break 2 this weekend. My 1st full marathon was 4:57, 2nd 4 months later ( in san fransisco) was 4:33, 3rd last month was 4:16. I've only done to tri's, a sprint and olympic, and am doing a 1/2 IM in march, and IM AZ in nov. I still have a long way to go. Placement wise, because I'm under 18, I've placed in a few races including a 10k, 10 mile, and an olympic tri.

I ran an easy 30 minutes today and was bumped that I had to go home since it was getting dark, I would have enjoyed running longer. A year ago, I couldn't run 1/2 mile without absolutely hating it! So, while I haven't gotten much faster, I can run much longer now AND really like it. And that's improved my quality of life, which is what tris are all about for me.

...and BF says I'm rarely ever in a crappy mood anymore

wow! Congrats everyone - that is awesome!

400 watts - how many pounds lost is that? I have lost almost 80 pounds myself! (not due to tris though - just improved diet and personal training/running) and my waist has gone from 38" (yes - I know!) to 30".

And one year ago I could not run 2 min at 5.6 mph.....now I can run 45-50 min at 6.8 mph or more....and i feel like I could do more when I stop too (that is just how long the longest runs have been in my running program so far).

Keep your stories/pics coming!!!

10 years ago, I swam 750mts in 20' and something (2'40"/100mts), few months ago, I broke 50' for a 3.8k swim in the same pool (1'18"/100mts).

awesome Vinnie!!! I am a brand new swimmer...not even sure I could swim 100m non-stop yet! I actually seriously doubt my ability to swim 25 m LOL! (my lessons start in a week.....I am sure it will be a rude wake-up call).

As of October 2007, I had never run more than 4 miles at a time. A few weeks ago I completed a half marathon at a pace that was faster than my June 2007 2-mile run pace.

Prior to last Feb I never swam with my face in the water and couldn't do more than 100m. I hired a TI coach and after 6 months of weekly coaching I was doing 2600m workouts at a 2:20 per hundred pace. I'm now under 2:00 per hundred with a very efficient stroke and still lots of room to improve. We did drills for 3 months before he ever even let me try to swim. Stick with it and do the drills, it really works.

As for running, I couldn't do a mile a year ago. I ran 5.2 miles this morning at a 10 minute mile pace (and it was hilly and 18 degrees.

Although my times may be slower than a lot of people around here, they are now respectable. I put them in here because I'm proud of them, not because they are good based on other people's standards, but because they are by mine. Do the same for yourself, use your times and distances to strive for consistent improvement, and don't worry about how fast other people are. They started somewhere too!

Good Luck!

Just stick to it, do some volume and carry on, as that quote says "it takes years of hard work for an overnight success", you will be amazed with in ~18 months the progress you made.

Have fun,

Vinnie

thanks Vinnie and Bossman! Congrats on your improvements too!

I actually am starting with a TI coach next week.....but dang - I need to be 'swimming (at least slowly)' in less than 3 months....I want to do my first tris in June or even May......

I absolutely am only judging myself compared to me and no one else....I have improved IMMENSELY already with still LOTS of room to improve yet.....but I love hearing/reading about others success too!

I'm living off my latest success.  A year ago I participated in an indoor triathlon...took last in my AG (13/13) with distances of 1.05 mi for the swim, 6.65 mi on the bike, and 2.11 mi on the run (it was a 30 minutes per sport race).  This year after a lot of work in the beginning of the season...hours and miles upon miles, I came in 6th in my age group of 25 with distances of 1.01 mi for the swim, 8.39 mi for the bike, 2.62 mi for the run.  Less than a mile more and I would have taken my age group; I was also second in the biking in my age group.  It proves just how much a bit of good train and some motivation can change things around.  Good luck!!

I'll show you my transformation too! (not due to tris either since I have yet to do my first.....just lots and lots of hours spent in the gym and running)

I am not sure if these will post in the correct order.....the Santa pic is from Dec 2001. I was probably close to 200 pounds there.....then the other one is a 'collage' that I put on my blog a couple of months ago and is self-explanatory....then the one of me in a 'kini is from Jan 2008 during a vacation to Mexico. I weighed 147 in that pic....and I am 142 pounds now.

July 07 - 237lbs from a high of 245

Church was doing a duathlon on Sept 29th (3/10/1) and a few people I knew were doing it.  I was getting disgusted with my weight and fitness level.

Started training.  I remember when I first did 10 miles on the bike, I was so excited.

I started jogging and just 5 minutes would kill me and that was as slow as I could go and still call it not walking.

My initial goal was to get to 220.

Now I am at 210 and have 200 in my sights.

It is all about determination and the endurance to keep it up.  The 1st 3-4mths were agony almost everytime when running.  Biking not so bad.

I can now jog at a little faster pace for over 40 minutes and have done 50 miles on the bike with lots of hills.   I also am getting some definition in my legs, arms, chest, etc as I workout a few times a week too and the loss of weight helps too with that.

About 6 years ago I was a horribly unhealthy couch potato, went thru the typical saw-a-picture-of-my-fat-self and realized I needed to make some changes (I was only in my late 20's at the time). So I started running, went to the gym, hired a nutritionist to learn how to eat (I didn't even know what a carb was) and I lost 40 pounds that first year. My entire family is unhealthy and my childhood habits were hard to break, but I did it.

I thought I was doing really well with my running and my 5K and 10K's, until I moved to BC and discovered triathlon. The rest, as they say, is history - I'm now a tri addict who's another 10 pounds lighter (so that's 50 in total!) and health and fitness is my way of life, no longer just a hobby. I'm not the fastest on the course and I never will be, but for me it's such an accomplishment to just be out there doing it. As of January 2007 I had never swam a lap in my life, and hadn't been on a bike since I was 9. But last year I did 3 triathlons (2 sprints and on an Oly relay team) and this year although I'm training even harder I'm having even more fun.

Thanks, triathlon! ;-)

I've lost over 90lbs in 18 months.  I used to wear size 56 (tight) and now im in 42's.  I still have a good way to go, but im damn proud of what i've accomplished so far.
I had a 1/2 Marathon PR of 47 minutes between a January 2007 and November 2007.    I've PR'd so many run times in 2007, and so far 2008 that I've lost track.  I know they will stop, but I hope they don't stop until well after April 13th......IMAZ.  I feel like I could run forever ( I'm still awfully slow), and I rode 92 miles on Saturday.  IM training gives you all kinds of confidence.

November '06

Weight 200+ (height 6'3", BP 150/95, cholesterol 223 (third straight year of over 200 with little to no drop).

November '07

Weight 181, BP 115/80, cholesterol 173.

Now, I'm thrilled with the improvement I've shown in each discipline, but the dramatic improvement in my cholesterol #'s had me doing back hand springs.  Well, ok, maybe not that dramatic, but I was definitely on cloud nine.  With it running in my family, the fact that I don't have to take drugs (they were threatening me with it if I couldn't get it down) has me happier than anything else.

Congratulations to all in your success and keep up the good work.

For me,
Late 2006 / early 2007
Weight = close to 300 (started weighing myself at around 280)
Feb '07 Glucose = 117

Feb 2008
Weight 241
Glucose = 98

Getting faster and riding/running/swimming farther but the number I really want to beat is the Glucose level. My doctor gave me the choice, Diabetes medication or loose weight, I took the Triathlon route to keep diabetes away.
