Subject: Swimming - Out of Breath until I took off my wetsuit

I have been training with a wetsuit and this is the 1st time swim training too.  I have been getting winded badly after a few laps.

Today I did two 100 sets and decided to try taking off the top half of my desoto 2 piece.  It was a little cold but I got used to it.

Anyway, I immediatly did a 100 set the whole way without needing to flip to my back or without gasping.  It was a significant difference.

I think the main thing was that I noticed I could rotate easier and hold my head out a little longer to get a full breadth.

Additionally, I think the top is a little too tight.  I bought a size 6 and I am probably on the upper end but I am loosing weight and did not want to have to buy a smaller size later.

Matt,

I would think that your wetsuit is to tight. A wetsuit should improve your swimming by providing additional bouancy thus creating less drag. I'm sure that once you get your weight down and get a better fit, things will be a lot different.

if you are swimming in a pool with your wetsuit it might also be an overheating issue causing the breathlessness -

even if your wetsuit is not too tight everyone has told me (swim coach etc) that it takes time to get used to the snugness of wetsuits and breathing...

That is a good thought except that the pool is not heated and the breathlessness is occuring right from the beginning.   A few weeks ago it was 63F.  It may be 64 or 65 now.

On getting used to the wetsuit, that is a good point and I will keep that in mind.  Starting swimming with a wetsuit may just be complicating matters.  My stroke, smoothness was instantly better without the top.  When I took the bottom off, I noticed that I was enjoying the benefits of the bouyancy of the bib-john by keeping my legs higher.

I have owned a full wetsuit for many years but never truly felt comfortable in it.  I swam IMLP last summer with a new sleeveless and loved the unrestricted movement in the shoulders, and it felt loose on the chest.  Even though my swim may be a bit slower than with a full sleeved, it's worth it as a few minutes for me really doesn't make too much of a difference.
