Attention Boston BTers:

If anyone works in Boston, the YMCA in Chinatown (Wang) is beginning a Master's Swim Class on Wednesday's at 6:45 from January 5 to Feb 23 and the cost for the whole enchalada will be $60 or $10 per session (I believe). Hope to see you there.

Mike :-)

Hi everyone,

I have started this class and it is awesome, but I was mistaken on the pricing. The $10 is for Y members for the entire session, but the coach is a really cool guy, and said that if anyone wanted to come and try it out, come and see if you like it. ABSOLUTELY GREAT SWIM WORKOUT!

Hope this is beneficial for someone.

Just keep pedaling - mike

Hey Nikki,

The Swim workout was pretty good. Started with 3 x 100 (freestyle, kick, pull) for a warm up, went into 4 x 50 with 30sec Rest Interval, into 8 x 25 w/45 RI Sprint down, differrent stroke back. After that 4 x 50 practicing Streamlining (30 sec RI) and then due to the time spent explaining the different intervals, we ran out of time, but that was just under half of the work out. There are about 1200 more yards of drills for the complete workout, so there is potential for a 2200 yard workout, and it was AWESOME.

It is great to have an actual coach to help with stroke efficiency and turning, etc. Its a good class, and I would highly recommend it to anyone. There is a couple (not married) in the class using it as a training tool for an olympic tri in Memphis in May. Nice group, and turned a few on to this site. Who knows, maybe more for our training circle.

Hey Nikki,

I think I had to dig around on the YMCABoston website to get the info on the swimming classes. I may have even had to drill down to the individual branches. Not easy to find, that's for sure.

Did anybody hit the slopes this weekend (MLK)? I was at Mt Snow in Vermont, and I was surprised by how many people were not there. Worked out for me!

Talk to you soon,
Mike

i just looked up the wang YMCA, its on wednesdays 6:45pm. i just jumped into a bike clinic at fastsplits on wed 7pm. if anyone hears about another good swim clinic, let me know. the guy i used to go to suddenly stopped coaching. i'm going to try to get hold of him for some references.

How do you like the Bike Clinic? I have been wanting to try something like that myself. Anyway, for the pull portion of the workout that is where you put the buoy between your legs and use the upper body part of the stroke by itself, thus pulling yourself through the water with no kicking. I had never done it in the past (pre class) but it's pretty cool.

One of the few things I remember from swimming lessons as a kid was the 8-count kick for freestyle. For every rotation of the arms, we were told to kick 8 times. To this day I kick like a madman! Now that I am doing the Master's swim, and we do the various "pull" laps, I have to continuously force my self to not kick. How funny! I wonder if they still teach that.

More snow in a few hours! YAHOO! I am going boarding this weekend for my birthday! Yay for me.

There is a better than even chance that I will go up for it. It's a ways to drive for a 3 mile run, but still a worthy cause.
