Subject: Triathlon Training Device PLEASE READ
Hi there I am a student currently working on a detailed design project involving the design of a gym like specific training device used for trithletes. I am currently investigating the surrounding market and trying to attain what a triathlete would want on such a training device. I understand that core weight training must be included. Could some triathletes give me an idea of what they would like on such a device and what would best suit triathhletes. I would be very grateful of such help. Thanks

Are you talking about a weight training machine or a cardio machine?

I'm a little confused. Triathlon's incorporate 3 sports, so will this "training device" enable you to run, swim and bike?

I'm talking about a weight training machine that increases core stability and specific muscle groups needed for the different disciplines. Any info would of great help. Thanks

Oh, ok.

How would your machine differ from the equipment already in the gym? What would be the benefit be over the current weight machines in the gym.

Training specific triathlon muscle groups and core training can currently be done effectively with weight training machines offered at most gyms, so I guess I'm wondering how differences you are considering.

Sounds interesting!

I hate to disappoint you, but I think that simple cheap options like a stability ball are great for training the core. The unstable environment forces the core to work very hard.

I use a Total Gym that we have here at work, yes it's the Chuck Norris infomercial thing, but I swear by it.

The main difference would be that the device could be used in a small space within a user's home. It would save time going to the gym etc. as well as money in the long run. I am looking to design a device that operates on balled feet so that it isn't stable which will in turn increase the core strength. Obviously I can't have everything on the one device as this may increase chance of injuries overworking certain areas etc... However I am looking to incorporate a couple of other weight training devices for maybe the shoulders and legs. Could you please give me a idea of the actual devices you prefer to use. For example what devices on a multi gym you use for each part of the body? Thanks I hope you can help.

I know nothing about designing machines, but I gotta tell you that working multiple joints and multiple muscles is preferred over single joint/single muscle exercises.

I am a strength and conditioning coach for a collegiate basketabll team and one who participates in tri training and tri events - a stability ball and exercise tube (looks like a rubber hose) can provide dozens of core training exercises aerobic and anaerobic - look in the www.performbetter.com site for ideas/videos, there are combination exercises with the stab ball and exercise tube very specific to swimming, biking, and running, even transition drills believe it or not - but there are many devices/machines, etc already being sold - possibly connecting the tube to the stability ball would make an interesting device, but the Chuck Norris total gym already addresses that somewhat - good luck
