Subject: Shin Splints/Calf Pain/Knee Pain ????
I've just started training for some sprint distance tri's in january of this year and have been experiencing a lot of leg pain from running. This isn't a new thing. I did a tri five years ago and my shin splints/calf pain was so bad that after the day of the race I didn't run for two years. I've tried a number of times to start running again and always get the same results.

I've done many of the tried and true shin splints remedies without success.

-icing/heat
-stretching
-fitted for shoes (at the store)
-only run on soft surfaces
etc. etc. etc.

So I'm thinking that I need to go to the next step, but I'm not sure what that is. Should I get a gait analysis....thinking that maybe I'm running "wrong" or should I see a foot specialist and see if I need orthodics, maybe a PT to strengthen the surrounding muscles??

I do have very loose joints (I have a genetic condition-mild) so I do know that my hips and knees are not very stable and I'm sure that this is contributing to this problem. But I just don't know what the next step should be. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I really want to continue with my tri journey, pain-free.

TIA,
Katherine

I would visit a Sports MD and s/he can check out all those problem areas you mentioned, and make a recommendation for PT and/or a podiatrist for possible orthotics.

I used to get shin splints frequently until I changed my running form. The book Chi-running helped prevent my problem and I haven't had an issue in over a year. Having said that, my problem wasn't quite as severe as yours; get checked out by a doctor to make sure that there isn't an underlying problem.

I've never had shin splints -- til now. I've got a race in 4 weeks and can't run. I think mine could be from 2 things. I've gained some weight that I'm trying to take off. But, I'm carrying about 10 extra lbs right now, and I was heavy to start with. Also, I changed running shoes. They were fitted at a running store and even have more cushioning than my old pair, but they are a different brand. They feel fine, but I'm going back to my Asics to see if that helps. Until then, my doc said ice before and after the run, stretch, use a rolling pin to workout the knots in your calf and quads, and back off on the distance for a while.

He told you to ice before the run? You shouldn't stretch an iced muscle. It's okay to stretch it if the attachments aren't iced, but if the attachments are, don't stretch it.

There are a few different types of shin splits. I am assuming yours is anterior tibialis that is bothering you? If so, a good stretch to do before you run is to sit in a chair with your leg extended and toes pointed. Then, with your foot, write the alphabet in the air - twice! Also, don't be afraid to massage (using The Stick or rolling pin) BEFORE your run either. You can roll the anterior tibialis, just don't roll over the bone. Good luck. I hope changing your shoes helps .

thanks everyone,

yes they are anterior. the funny thing is that i ran last tuesday (and felt great) and then everyday since my shin splints have gotten worse....until I went skiing on sunday and they got better. i swear I can't figure these things out. I ran again today and am sore. so I decided to see an specialist and most likely get orthodics. hopefully he can knows something I don't. to all that have shin splints I hope they are better soon....very frustrating and painful!
