Hey guys....

This will be my first tri of the year.

Did any of you do it last April? I'm wondering what the weather will be like and how warm/cold the water will be.

I did the HIM in October and found the location to be great. Be sure to have your family bring food/drinks as there was nothing available for them to buy.

Anyone staying over in a local hotel the night before? You up to maybe meet up for an early dinner?

Haven't done it before but doing the Duathlon this year. I debated doing the Tri but really want to focus on my bike and then run without worrying about the swim for this race. Doing my 1st Tri in Hammonton in May. I'm pretty sure the water will be COLD though this time of year. I'm local so driving down in the AM but hope to meet up with any other BTer's there!

KathyG:

I did last year's Bassman. Yes, it can be cold. The air temperature on race morning was about 48 & water temp. was about 57. I would recommend a full wetsuit with an extra cap. On the bike, I wore a warm cycling jersey & toe covers on my bike shoes(no socks).
It is a pretty well run race. The disproportionately long bike leg makes this a strong cyclist's dream course.
Have fun!

Cyclist dream...LOL...that is why I'm driving 300 each way to do the race plus it is early season and outdoor races don't really start until June in MA.

I have a full wetsuit and neoprene hat and booties for the swim. I've done a couple races in the mid 50's before water temp.

Are you doing it this year again?

No...I am putting triathlons on the back burner for this year. I am focusing on bike racing.
Good luck.

Didn't know anything about it until now. I am seriously thinking about upping my training and doing this as my 1st tri of the year.

I guess I will NEED to get a wet suit if I do this though.

You could just do the duathlon if you don't want to deal with a wetsuit. I'm doing as I want to focus on the bike and not worry about it being my 1st swim in competition. Hope to see you out there!

I haven't raced it yet but I checked out the fall bassman and its a pretty well run race. I was going to do it since its 5 minutes from my house but I decided to do Devilman instead. Good luck though and watch yourself on stage road its pretty torn up and there are some big potholes.

From last year I think you would like a wetsuit. If it is in the 50's I wouldn't swim w/o one or neoprene hat.

The water isn't deep so if it warm water temp will warm up quickly.

I think this is a casual race so if you sign up to do the tri and want to switch to the du they'd most likely let you.

It would be fun to meet you if you end up doing it.

One big plus..indoor bathrooms and showers afterwards...how rare those two things are at tris!

I actually e-mail corresponded with the directors of this race of this very topic and he indicated you could do this but give at least 2 weeks notice on the switch.

I did it last spring. The water was cold but not too bad. I wore a long sleeved wetsuit and a neoprene cap. Once I was on the bike I just wore my trisuit and was fine.

In April you never know what the weather will be like. I will be racing again this year. Let cross our fingers that it won't be too cold!

I think I'm signing up as well. I am just going to drive early in the morning and do it. I just want to have one official race done before Florida 1/2 Ironman.

This is a great race. Good people and the water will be cold. A great way to start your season. I think this is my 3rd year in a row down there. No complaints from me.....

Cool..new triathlete doing your first tri!!

We are driving down Saturday (about 300 miles) and are staying at the Hampton Inn Saturday night. If anyone else is staying over night maybe we can try and meet up either at race site at packet pick up or for dinner.

When it closer for sure.

I plan on doing an ows Saturday after doing race packet pick up if anyone wants to join me. It helps me mentally to adjust to what the water temps are like even if it is cold.

How has the weather been done there? Any days in the 70's? Those days warm up the lake quickly.

I tried on my wetsuit last night and it still fits as I worried it might be to big now. 2.5 weeks for ows dang that is coming up quickly.

I'm not tapering at all for the race...Monday I have 16 mile run and Wed a 75 mile/45 minute brick. I'll probably be pretty fatigued as it is at the end of my 2 weeks of build. It should be great though

70 degree days? No, we haven't seen any of those unfortunately...

I am also signed up for this race this year, I am doing it with my girlfriend and my roomate, it is the second tri for the 3 of us (we did the endless summer tri last year). I am a little worried about the bike, I have a swimming and running background, and finally purchased a bike a month ago, and have been riding as much as possible. I signed up for this becasue of the long bike, I am mainly using it as a training experience... I would love to hear from an experienced bassman as to what the bike is really like...

I did the HIM last Fall so did the bike course loop twice.

Bike course is flat but can be windy. It is the shape of a backwards P. The circle part has a hill at various grade first half up then down hill but the hill is not very steep or hard.  Road is mixed smoothness wise some parts the road was a bit torn up and you go over a couple of bridges but for a tri pretty good and not a lot of traffic on the road.

I really am thinking about doing this race now. I guess I could do it and then start my taper before Devilman. I just dont know if I can resist the temptation to race when its right by my house.

Alright I'm out for Bassman. While changing my tires on my cross bike I noticed that the rear rim is cracked in several places, I guess 5 years and 10K will do that to an open pro. So it looks like my 100 entry fee will be going to new rims. I do plan on riding over to check out the race. Also, are you allowed to swim the day before during packet pick up? I see someone mentioned that and I wouldnt mind getting in a little open water swimming.

Last fall for HIM I swam as did other folks. I'm planning on swimming Saturday..need atleast 1 ows before the tri. Is it warm down there? I'm hoping some nice weather will warm up the lake/pond. It isn't deep so it won't take to many 70 degree days to make a difference.

Glad you found the rim crack.
