Less than a month to go!  Anyone else really excited about this race?

I did this one last year and enjoyed it a lot.  :)

I am in for the sprint as well, first of the season.  I am looking forward to it.  This will be sprint number 6, I think.  This will be my second salt water open water swim.

I am so looking forward to the big group of BTer's as well.  See ya all shortly!

We're fired up too!!!

There will be 4 bands on course for the sprint, Mardi Gras Krewes, and much more!
Simon Lessing is racing the 1/4, and will be hosting the dinner Friday evening, to benefit Athletes for a Cure.

Of course, Budweiser will be there in full force, with adult beverages, and the Line Up will be rockin' the house after the race...

For those of you who raced last year, check out the course maps at www.lonestartri.com. We've altered the run course quite a bit, to make it much more straightforward and not so twisty/turny.

Make sure you hang around on Saturday. We've got seminars all day: Nutrition, Injury Prevention, Simon Lessing, Andrea Fisher, and Suni the Astronaut. She ran the Boston Marathon in space, and will talk about her 6 months on a space station.

Saturday night, dinner on Palm Beach!

Working on finishing up the Athletes Guide and confirmation

I'm in the first time's group.  I figure if it my first salt water swim I'm a first timer. I haven't done any open water training. My first and only was the Danskin last year and it was completely different than swimming in the pool.  I need the extra help!

I had never done an OWS in a race when I did Lonestar either. You'll be fine. I was in the 1st timer wave also, and it seemed like lifeguards outnumbered swimmers. If you can, I really reccomend the OWS seminar that's the day before. You'll get some really great advice from the lifeguards, and you'll have a chance to swim about 2/3 of the race course, which was great for building confidence.

That's great advice about the swim clinic.  I did it in 2006 and it was crazy!  But it was held on the gulf side in about 5 foot surf!  But the lifeguards were great and it was well worth the washing machine swimming.

I will have to check this out.  Thanks for the reminder!

Thanks for the heads up on the clinic. That sounds like it could be a great confidence builder. I'm trying to get my "support crew" ready to go by Friday AM (two teenaged boys and my BF) but it is sort of like herding cats. I'm coming from San Antonio and have been trying to find a route to Galveston that doesn't go through Houston....anyone?

Is there going to be a BT get together of any kind?  I heard there was a "house " last year!

24 Days!

Can't wait to get this party started!!!

This will be my first outdoor triathlon, so as well will be my first open water swim in competition.

Just this past weekend I competed in one of the Lifetime Fitness Indoor Triathlon events. The best part about it was that I was able to put the swim, bike and run together and I exceeded the distances for the Sprint, so that helps put aside a little bit of the nervousness.

You picked a great race for a first timer!

The water is surprisingly smooth and not cold.  If you don't taste the water you'd assume you were in a lake!   You swim in a (hopefully) straight line almost parallel to shore -- for a lot of people it's comforting to see land everytime you breath to your left.   You swim toward a big paddle boat (a big white ship) before turning toward shore.  You don't have to worry too much about looking for the orange buoys marking the course since you can see the ship from far away.

And you have no hills to climb on the bike or run .

Im super stoked for this race. It will be my first tri back since a bike wreck in August that put me out of completing my first HIM (Longhorn). Never thought that 4 months after getting my neck brace off (7 since the accident) that I would be competing in another triathlon. I cant wait!!

I'm entered for the sprint. But I have a question about the swim.

The only triathlons I have completed in with an OWS are here in Fort Worth in the summer - hardly what you would call cold. Wet suits were not allowed. sprint in Galveston. I'm faced with the question of whether to swim in a wet suit or not. I currently do not have a wetsuit suitable for swimming, so would need to rent or buy.

To help me come to a decision I'd lke to hear other peoples experiences of doing this tri (or others) with and without a wetsuit. eg how much time will I save in the swim, how much time will I lose taking it off.

wetsuits are definitely faster. Water will be about 72 or so...Could be upper 60's, though.

We have wetsuit strippers, so you won't lose time getting it off. It takes about 5 seconds

"They" say that you'll save about 10 seconds per 100 meters with a wetsuit.  So you'd save about one minute at this race.  Not a lot, really, considering that the race might take you over 75 minutes or more to finish.

Personally I like using a wetsuit for any race I can.  The added buoyancy and speed is kind of nice.  It doesn't get much use use in Texas summer races though.

There are some places online and brick-and-mortar where you can rent wetsuits.  You might try that for Lonestar before deciding if you want to buy one.

Last year the water was fine temp wise. I checked this morning and it's at 62.5 degrees today. May not be as warm this year. Avg temp is 72 deg

Even though I'm completely undertrained, I'm still looking forward to starting the season with this race.  Despite the downpour last year, it was still awesome, so I can only imagine how great it'll be this year!
