Subject: New to Tri
Hello everyone, I registered for my first ever Tri (mini) - the Danskin L.A. Triathlon. I am reading everything I can on training and am experiencing "information overload", especially heart zone training. Can anyone recommend a heart rate monitor that doesn't require a Master's Degree to figure it out? Thanks for your help!

hi and welcome to the board. I can't recommend anyspecific HRM, because they all need a master's degree if you ask me. I just want to swim, bike, and run. How tough can that be? I did it all the time as a kid with no training manuals or HRMs. Joe Friel's Training Bible is way to complicated for me as well. I sold my copy on eBay

You'll like the Danskin, it's a great race.

You may want to check out a Forum Thread on the Timex Body Link system from last month. Look under "Product Reviews" and find the thread titled "Timex Body Link System". This talks about the body link system, but if I remeber correctly several other HRM's were also discussed. I use the body link system for running and bikking and I think it is great. The big draw back to it is the price. But it has made my training much more effective and enjoyable.

Thanks for your support and your valuable input on Joe Friel's book. I want to enjoy the experience of the training without becoming a slave to manuals and monitors! It's good to know that I'm not alone! Take care.

I use the polar M52 HRM.  It is pretty basic and after a few uses very easy to use.  It helps keep me from overtraining and running as fast as I can every day.  I use it for the bike and run although from reading several articles on this site and others I have found that your Max HR varies per event.  I would suggest getting even a Polar A1 series which is bare bones at a minimum.  That way you can at least tell what zone you are running in.  Most of a beginners HRZ should be in the 60-70% range for endurance building and then after a good base move into speedwork ect.  

I am a beginner and this is how I interpet the information so I could be way off.  We'll see soon enough I guess.  In a nutshell, it probably can only help to get one but one is not necessary to train.  Just listen to your body.

Welcome!!! And i must say i have done my bit of homework on HRM's and it really depends on how much money you are willing to spend and what functions you want. I am going to get the Timex bodylink system because of the distance and speed function will be very nice. you can just take off and run and not map out routes and all that. and it also has the data link that records all your data for your pc to keep track. I am a total gear head so the bodylink will be great for me. Good luck in your search. but i would go with a polar if you dont get the timex. they seem to have all the good reviews. Jack......
