Hi
I am training for triathlon over the winter in ireland the tempeture is between 5-10 degrees C (36-50degrees F) cold enough when wind is included. I train with long sleeved top or cycling jacket but always wear shorts. A friend recently told me that i should wear full lenght tights as my muscles would be warmer and i would be faster is this true??

I got a set of the Specialized leg warmers for over here during the winter, way cheaper than a set of tights, and are easy to take off if on a long ride and the temp rises, they take up very little room.

That's what I would recommend.

I was always told if it's below 55F (12C) your knees should be covered to keep your tendons, ligaments, and muscles in your knees happier.

In that temperature range, I cover my knees - either with tights or knee warmers.

I don't know if you'll be faster.  It's certainly easier to warm up though.

Wow. Hats off to you for training on those Irish roads. I rented a car and drove around the southern half of your island, and while driving on the left side of the road didn't bother me the lack of shoulders and blind turns kept me on my toes. On the other hand, I can't think of a much prettier place to ride.

Sorry I don't have anything to add regarding your question. Stay warm!

Hi Damien,

I am also from Cork, so I am well used to the weather! Long shorts might not make you much faster but they could prevent an injury.

If you're near a Lidl shop, I know that they have a cycle stuff on sale starting today (Mar 6), so you might pick something up there.

Best of luck!

I don't know how you train in 36F in just shorts. Brrrr!

But, yes, you should definitely at least have your knees covered in those temps when on the bike.
