Subject: flat tire / hole in tire - question
I know how to change my tire, however, this is the first time that I've ever had such a big hole in the tire.  I'll be able to replace the tube but I'm not sure what I need to do regarding the hole in the tire.  Is that something I can fix with a patch?  suggestions and advice will be appreciated.  I'm hoping that I don't need a new tire.

If you have a patch that will fit over the hole, you can probably fix it. How big is the hole?

The hole is slightly larger than the diameter of a good sized nail.

Depends. For an emergency ride home, the power bar wrapper / folded 1$ bill / duct tape will hold the tube in and works well. But, you shouldn't use a boot as a permanent solution and should replace that tire. You have a weak point in the casing and it'll only get worse. Is the cost of a tire worth the cost of a blowout downhill at 40mph? Not to me.

If the tube bulges w/o a boot on the hole, throw out the tire or use it as a trainer one.

You should certainly get a new tire before your next ride. Once a tire (like on your car) is compromised the situation can and will go bad quickly. Even at 20 MPH it is easy to get out of control when the tire really falls apart and it is just not worth the risk.

x2  No need to risk injury when simply replacing the tire takes chance out of the equation
