If anyone could help a newbie out with my question below I would really appreciate it...

 I just got my Narni and put it together last night (well my husband put it together). I wanted to take it to a shop for a tune-up because I thought thats what you are supposed to do. I explained the situation with having bought it online and just assembled it, and they said it was gonna be $100. I asked if that included any fitting and they said no. I have a local tri store as well but they are notoriously expensive so I figured this place would be a better bet. Is there any reason they should be charging for a full tune-up are they trying to rip me off? $100 seems like an awful lot if I am going to have to get it fitted as well. Is this something that needs to be done? Should we just try and do it on our own? How important is fitting? Sorry for all of the newbie questions but I am clueless.

When I bought my second Javelin in, I brought it in and asked the guy to just give it a "safety check." He did a quick once-over while I was standing there, found 2 things that needed tweaking (headset and gearing cable), and charged me 20 bucks. He said that it was unnecessary to pay for a tune-up when the bike wasn't at all broken in. He said, "go ride it - when your cables get loose come in and have them tightened. Bring it in for a tune-up in the spring."

My first Javelin (the one that got stolen), I didn't bring in, and about a week into riding it discovered that the front hub was too tight, so brought it in and got the same once-over and it cost 10 bucks. 

I put my Narno together and brought it to a shop for a tune up. I asked the guy to make sure it was "race ready." He fixed the cables, the cable housing, the headset, and the brakes for 50 bucks out the door. It shifts like butter and stops on a dime.

100 bucks is too much. I bet if your husband brought it in it would be less. I see a local shop take advantage of women all the time. It sucks but it happens.

We wondered the same thing about the husband bringing it in instead of me. The guy at the store was trying to tell me it would be a very time intensive thing and I just didn't get it. I said I would have to take it somewhere else. We'll give that a try or might have to try and find another shop.

Mine was gone for 3 days. He just had a lot to do which I didn't mind becuase it's pretty much a 2 man operation.

Also judging from your screen name I'm guessin' you went to PSU?

Thanks for that. I was hoping more for the component build though. I've went ahead and emailed Javelin to see if they can give me a run down of what comes with the bike.

To be honest though, it's hard to be convinced to buy one of those bikes when they just had that closeout sale. The prices were just too good, and makes this sale seem a lot worse, especially when you're paying a grand more for lower level components. If it comes with those Zero 038s though, I'd be very interested...

edit: I take that back - I can't find too many bikes to compare to, but actually it seems that $1300 for SRAM Rival is a pretty good price. Looks like most other SRAM Rival equipped bikes are going for a bit over $2000

I have been reading about the Javelin's and just found out about them.  I have a question:  I am a 5' woman with a 29" inseam and quite long arms, 22".  I have found a 47cm Fara that I really like, however I am pretty much a newbie and do not know if this bike would be too big for me.  When I stand over the top tube I have about 1/2" clearance it seems.  This , I am told, is pretty much a new bike as it was bought from a show by a dealer who tells me that it has not been ridden, except a little bit at the show.  It's a 2006.  He is an older gentleman and is getting rid of his bikes and this is one of them.  He also has two Varese bikes -  one a 51cm and the other a 58cm I think.  I am looking for a decent road bike.  I took my boyfriend to see the bike, but he is into much higher end bikes and didn't look at this very seriously, but I don't have the kind of money that he has spent on his bikes and if this would fit me, I think it could be a great bike for riding around.  It has Shimano Veloce components with a Campy Veloce derailleur in the rear.  What especially concerns me is that I have read that the top tube is 52cm and I'm afraid that may be too long - I don't know and don't know anything about things like where my knee is supposed to be when on the downstroke (if that's how one says this)  ...  Thanks so much for any help anyone could be to me.  Also, he is asking $550 for this bike and I think $675 for the Veloce's.  They are in Colorado and the Veloce's look like they are in excellent condition as does the Fara and were bought when he bought the Fara.

I have just spent all evening and half of the night reading what everyone has written about Javelins on this forum and have enjoyed it a lot and hopefully learned a lot too.

Also, I have an 80's Specialized Allez Sport that I think fits me and a Cannondale of similar vintage that is too big for me, which I want to sell to recoup the price for this if I get it.  I'm hoping to ride lots more and if I don't, I figure that I could sell the Fara for a fair price.

Either people on bt bought all their bikes are no wonder they discounted them because they just had so many of them which makes me kinda sad in a way.

Either way they owe bear a lot for letting us know and we owe bear a lot for letting us know.
