Overall Rank = 94/444

Age Group Rank = 12/27
Pre-race routine:

Decided not to spend the night in Athens, and just woke up really early at 4 am and drove from Dallas. Had a bagel and banana when I left the house, and then a power bar shorty before arrival.
Event warmup:

Absolutely nothing. It was too freaking cold. My warmup routine consisted literally of trying to stay warm...inside.
Swim
  • 05m 36s
  • 300 meters
  • 01m 52s / 100 meters
Comments:

Bad form. Pool was pretty chaotic with people incorrectly seeded (the racers' fault...not the director's). Couldn't get comfrotable and was always having to look up in front of me to see what was going on instead of keeping the head down and powering through. Couldn't really concentrate on nice easy strokes.
Transition 1
  • 03m 6s
Comments:

Holy smokes it was cold. This was my second triathlon, but certainly the FIRST time I have ever run out into sub- or at-freezing temperatures sopping wet with nothing but a bathing suit on. I took my sweet time in transition drying off and putting on lots of clothes (undershirt, jersey, pants, and head warmer) so I could be as "least uncomfortable" as possible on the ride.
What would you do differently?:

Probably could have done without the undershirt. Upper body stayed warm during the ride.
Bike
  • 49m 42s
  • 14 miles
  • 16.90 mile/hr
Comments:

I have GOT to get better on the bike. Even with the poor conditions, averaging under 17mph is pathetic. I'm givin up too much time to the field in this segment. The cold weather didn't help things, as my legs were really tight and heavy and I wasn't motivated to drop the hammer...I was just trying to survive the rough roads and icicles forming on my seat. Had some nasty calf cramps between the 8-10 mile marks.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

Can we say "numb feet." Legs and feet are dead enough after a bike ride, but the temps made it even worse. I ran slower than normal through transition in order to avoid the face plant from clumsy bare feet.
Run
  • 24m 41s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 56s  min/km
Comments:

It took at least the first mile to get the legs working properly again. That was an 8.5 minute mile. Once things loosened up, I was able to stride things out more and got my average under 8:00/miles. That was my goal, so I was happy with the run. Could have been better but for the elongated "warm up" period.

Congratulations on your race! How long did it take you to warm up afterwards? I was cold just reading your report.

Great race!  I wouldn't let your time on the bike disappoint you.  Fact is, it's hard to get going in that kind of cold and road surface.  When the best bike split out there is only a hair over 22mph, you know there are bad conditions!

But this has to be one of those memorable races, right?

Great race! Don't sweat the bike course. It was a slow course.
