Suncoast Trail in Tampa FL is 42 miles long with water boxes along the way. Eventually, it will be connected to another 15 miles to the south.

I haven't found anything like it in NC.

How about your state/hometown?

Ft. Worth, TX has the Trinity Trail that is pretty long and closed to traffic but quite a few runners/walkers so it can get sketchy.

Silver Comet Trail runs for 62 miles leaving from the western side of Atlanta all the way to the Alabama state line.  The first 45 miles are great.  The next 5-10 are a bit rough.  And then you get on the road for a little while but they just received funding to finish the final few miles.  Plus once you reach Alabama you can join up with the Chief Ladiga Trail.

When I lived there the problem wasn't walkers/runners it was the 2,000,000 squirrels that would jump out onto the trail as you got closer toward downtown.

Tallahassee, FL has the St. Marks Trail.  End to end is 16 miles, so you can go 32 round trip.  It has an extension that I seldom use that adds another 4 miles or so.  Plus all the many mountain biking trails.

Also, Whitehouse, TN is near where I used to live in KY, and they have a greenway, but I can't remember how long it is.

Agreed, I have only ridden there a few times and actually had to lay on the brakes once to avoide one of the little suckers.

MD has the B&A trail which goes from Arnold all the way up to Glen Burnie but crosses a lot of roads.  It is about 15 miles or so.

Also there is a trail around BWI that ties into the B&A sort of and adds another 7 or 8 miles.

NCR trail is not paved, but hard packed rocks that is a good hybrid or cyclocross trail.  About 25 miles long.

But the fact is ......... trails closed to traffic around here = walkers, runners, strollers, kids on training wheels, roller bladers.  i.e. - dangerous as hell to try and ride at usual pace on.

Seattle has a number of paved "multi-use" trails. Often they're rail trails (converted railroads) so they're generally flat.

In the summer they're used so much you can't get any sort of training done on them other than long low speed rides.

See Wikipedia for a list of rail trails.

The Denver area has well over a 100 miles of paved, closed to traffic trails. If you are willing to jump onto the roads for a couple of brief sections, you can make a 56 miles loop of the metro area. There are sections I use fairly regularly, and sections that are crowded and have lots of sharp turns with limited sight lines that I avoid entirely.

There is a great trail system called the south and north county trails that go from Van Cortlandt park in the bronx, all the way up to Carmel, NY in Putnam County. You have to come out of the trail and ride in traffic for about 10 minutes in Yonkers and 3 minutes in Elmsford, but that's it. The trails are beautiful.

The Katy trail in MO is an old rail bed that spans most of the state from St Louis to Kansas City. I say most of the state because it stopped about 70 miles short of KC. They also finished a lot of the tributary railways leading from towns to the main line.

Here we have the Centenial Trail. The Idaho Centenial Trail joins the Spokane River Centenial Trail at the state line to form 1 trail that is 61 miles from end to end. It can get pretty busy and is pretty darn flat. It crosses some roads but not bad and make a very nice long ride without the worry of getting hit by a car.

We also have the Trail of the Coeur d' Alenes bike path. A 72 mile long rails to trails project from Mullan, Idaho to Plummer, Idaho. Again pretty much pancake flat. It is slightly downhill from Mullan down (or uphill from Plummer up) but barely noticable, other than a slight difference in average speed. Not nearly as crowded as the Centenial trail and honestly quite a bit more scenic. A very good ride.

Now I want to go ride the Trail of the Coeur d' Alenes!

It technically is paved (its crushed limestone) but can be ridden with a road bike pretty easily.  A cyclocross bike is better for it though.    More info:  www.bikekatytrail.com

The American River Bike Trail in Sacramento is pretty awesome. 32 miles along the American River the whole way. Parks on one side, river on the other. Only problem is the cruiser bikers with their 12 packs on the weekends.

Now, if they could just bring that trail all the way to Mobile then I would be a much happy camper.

I've gone a few times to Hattiesburg, MS (1.5 hour drive) to ride the Longleaf Trace. I used it several times for my long training rides. Not having to deal with traffic, dogs, ect. was worth the drive. Plus, you go through some beautiful land.

I miss that trail. I grew up in Fair Oaks and used to go out there all the time.

In Jacksonville Fl we have the Baldwin Trail which is just over 14 miles one way.  If your early you'll be the only one on it for your first lap.  I'm about a 28 mile ride away with about 10 miles being on a state road that the Big Rigs frequent but I find it kind of fun to ride home from the trail.

I live about 10 miles away, but I hit it at least once a month. After all the cars hitting riders lately, I might start driving to it and riding it more often.

East Bank Levy trail in New Orleans runs 21.5 miles from Audubon Park to Destrahan. No cars except for an occasional levy policeman. I sure miss it.

I'm another Atlanta area Silver Comet Trail lover.

But NC has a rails-to-trails trail near Durham called the Tobacco trail .

We've got the Cardinal Greenway in Muncie, IN. 27 miles end to end with plans to connect to Richmond for a total of 52 miles. I do most of my riding along this paved trail as it's a lot safer than the roads!

I live close enough to the B&A Trail that I do a lot of my running on it. But, serious biking on it much after sunrise on a nice day ca be tricky. Between crossing roads and the masses of other people, it's not great for training. But, for walking the dog, slow ambling bike rides, strollers, and kids on bkies, it's a wonderful part of our community. Training on the bike, not so much.

It's not completely paved (small gravel on some of it), but the Glacier Drumlin trail here in Wisconsin is 52 miles from Cottage Grove to Waukesha.  I've only traveled on about 10-13 miles of it, and it has areas where you have to cross traffic, but it's nice.
