You can see the fracture in the image. I have a 10 km run race scheduled in 6 weeks. Is that enough time? Any recommendations?

I had that same break (rolled my foot on a branch while running) I wasn't allowed to put weight on it for at least 6 weeks and then it was with a big boot cast. Then I had physical therapy after...I would say you shouldn't race!

I did find that I could comfortably ride my bike on the trainer with cycling shoes so i did while out of service.

That sucks.. sorry for your fracture.  My unmedically trained (EMT doesn't count) opinion is you should skip the race.  Heal properly, and schedule an extra 10k afterwards when you can run again.  Your body will thank you for it.  If you train and run on a fractured foot your gait will change; there are a litany of other things all the way up to your hip and back that can and will be affected in a negative way.  Skip the race in 6 weeks and be rewarded later this summer.

You prob need a cast.  If so it won't come off for 6 weeks. Either way I bet you aren't running 10k for 3 months or so.

But I only have a B.S. degree from a business school.  Might wanna ask someone with an M.D. in front of their name.

Looks almost EXACTLY like my x-rays from 3 years ago (except it was the left foot). So what was my rehab like? Boot and crutches for 4 weeks. Boot for another 4 weeks. Then I could start riding again on the trainer. It was 3 months before I could start running.

I'd scrub the 10K now and not even TRY to rush it.

Sorry.

I would say dont do it, but if you are really set on doing it, try to get followup appointment in about 3-4 weeks for a followup x-ray to see how its healing. But then again, if you push to soon, you may jeopardize your whole season.

I wanted to get first hand knowledge from other's who've had the same type of fracture. The doctor told me 4 to 6 weeks, but it seems based on the advice I should skip the race. I don't have a cast, a boot or crutches, although I make a conscious effort not to put too much weight on it. I'm still swimming and cycling (indoor), just not running. I've had to stop doing flip turns, and push off the wall using only one leg.

I put my foot in a cold ice bath for about 30 to 60 minutes after work. The swelling is almost gone now, maybe 20% more to go. My toes are still bruised.

Um... No boot? That almost seems irresponsible. Your's is actually separated farther in the x-ray than mine was. Maybe I just heal slow...

Is a boot needed even if there is no pain? Does a boot compress the fracture or is it just padding protection?

The boot keeps you from flexing your foot and moving the bones around. For that bone to heal, it needs to stay set up bone to bone contact so it can fuse. Everytime you move that break apart, the healing process has to start all over again.

The impression I get from the xray you posted is one of two things.  The first possibility is what is known as a Jone's Fracture.  A Jone's fracture is a fracture of the styloid process of the 5th metatarsal.   The second is an avulsion of the styloid process of the 5th metatarsal.  I my experience with athletes, both are treated similarly.  I would highly suggest stopping the training activity.  I would also suggest you follow up with your GP or ortho to see what you should do.  Some will immobilize.  Others will alllow wgt. bearing as tolerated in a stiff soled type shoe.

The issue with this particular area in this particular bone is it's poor blood supply.  Healing isn't optimal without good blood supply. As a result, fractures in this bone do not always heal properly.  Also, the riding and the swimming you are engaging in places traction type forces on the area due to the muscular/tendon attachements in the area.  This continual stress keeps the bone ends moving excessively which prevents the bone callulus from forming effectively like trophytaker mentioned.

It's good you have gotten the swelling reduced.  It will help in the healing process.
