Total Time = 1h 21m 44s
Overall Rank = 7/86
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 1/3
Pre-race routine:

overall rank is men and women!!! of women I was 4th (by 4 seconds....almost had 3rd lost it to a 22 year old)
Event warmup:

walked and ran. Of course I should start by saying that I got up at 2:30 in the morning and could not fall back to sleep - must be my body's way of saying you want me to what?? at what time???
I got to the park around 6, and when I turned onto the road that leads to the park I thought: 'what am I doing? what was I thinking? just go home and train and forget this'
then I got there and body marking, transponders, set up all took over. It was cold out and I was really happy I had sweats on over my trisuit.
Swim
  • 15m 37s
  • 400 meters
  • 03m 54s / 100 meters
Comments:

If this really was only 400 meters I am shocked. We ALL had a hard time! and even though I thought my swim sucked I came out 16/86 (men and women) out of the water - front of pack...what a shock!

got in the water and started swimming - breathing every 3, focused on breathing...and it was hard - could not sight easily - contrast not as much in dark lake as in light pool...the people around me did not bother me as I thought they would - then again unbeknownst to me I was no longer in the pack - partly due to being FOP and partly due to swimming off the wrong direction....did breast stroke for a bit whilst I regathered my confidence and sight lines then swam breathing every stroke. FINALLY like a year later got to the buoy and my only thought (out loud) was this is only half way?? Holy carp! Needed to either do breast stroke or play seal to sight but then the swim was over, and breathless got out on the beach and ran - the crowd SO helped!!!
What would you do differently?:

learn to swim better especially in open water!
Transition 1
  • 02m 19s
Comments:

really long distance from swim end to transition area. hard to do but it went well - this is actually the run from the swim to transition they did not give us split out transition times - t1 included in bike time and t2 included in run time
Bike
  • 39m 40s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 18.80 mile/hr
Comments:

ranking of 3rd on bike is of men and women - out of 86
What would you do differently?:

learn how to handle the bike, go aero, drink...be able to shift gears....but it was my strongest section!!!
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

included in run time - not split out.
Run
  • 24m 6s
  • 2.75 miles
  • 08m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

18 out of 86 (men and women). so as sucky as I felt and as slow as I ran again not so bad!!!

When I started the run my lungs were burning from the bike - my legs were the usual feeling I have had after bricks, just lasted longer. I grunted a few times and a guy right behind me told me I was doing great....He paced off me - which helped. Halfway through the run I thought - I am never doing this again - then the end got close and I worked on picking the pace up - my pal ran ahead, then a girl passed me who had MFT (myfirst tri) division on her leg and I picked it up more - and everyone was yelling for us to race. She had more kick left than I did and that was the third place overall winner (by 4 seconds).
What would you do differently?:

run faster - duh
Post race
Warm down:

tried not to hurl on the feet of volunteers as they took my transponder off.

Event comments:

so not much to compare to as this is my first triathlon! but the changing bike course was a bit stressful in the days and hours leading up to the race...

Congrats on completing your first!

The swim was advertised as .75K which is just over 825 yards or just over .46 miles.
With my Garmin stuffed in my swim cap it registered .58 miles and I was swimming in anything but a straight line! So some of that extra mileage is due to my poor sighting skills.

Great Job!

it was a tiny AG.  Liked my splits though....cannot wait until I learn to go aero and some cornering/turning skills - then I can rule the bike

Cat - You are a tri powerhouse. You did great across the board, not many can. We both had our own demons trying to drag us down, but you battled them away with a vengeance. You beat all the other [younger] BTers that were there. Great Job - YOU ROCK!

Great job Cat

Your first race and it was definitely Pukeworthy. (Although you should avoid hurling on the vollies )

Sounds like the swim was tough but everything else about the race went fine. Your placement within the swim suggests (As you said) that it was tough for everyone. Currents in particular can really suck up a lot of time.

Great start to your season.
