Pre-race routine:

2 hour drive to Lewiston from home. Got up at 0615 after 3 1/2 hours sleep (trouble getting back on a nighttime sleep schedule on my days off) and drove down with my friend Todd who's training for IMCDA. It was snowy and foggy on the way down so we weren't too sure what we were getting in to.
Event warmup:

The weather in Lewiston was much better as usual. It was sunny and about 10 degrees warmer when we got to the race. Puttered around pumping up tires and deciding what to wear, then got transition set up. Ran for about 3 minutes, jumped up and down at the start line with my Tri-Fusion teammates and then the gun went bang!

Comments:

I felt like I went out too fast and was sucking wind by about the 1/4 mile point. But I held the pace as best I could and eventually felt pretty decent. VERY surprised to see a first mile split of 7:28. Second mile was 7:36. Slowed down just a little the last 100 yards to settle my HR down.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 01m 5s
Comments:

Not too bad. Had about a 50 yard run from the start of transition to my bike but then only about 5 yards from there to the mount line. Forgot to buckle my helmet though and had to stop for a few seconds to do that.
What would you do differently?:

Buckle my helmet.

Comments:

Was sitting on a 17.1 avg at the turn-around after the uphill so felt pretty good about that. The downhill was a runaway! I don't think I was ever under 22, even on the flatter sections and with a headwind, most of the time was between 25 and 30+. I passed a TON of people on the uphill portion of the bike and a few on the downhill. Had a good bike.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

Would have been better with speed laces.
Run
  • 15m 50s
  • 2 miles
  • 07m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

Again, I was surprised at the pace I was able to keep on the second run. I had hoped for about an 8 minute pace for the first run and 8 1/2 for the second so this was good. 1st mile at 8:03, 2nd at 7:47.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Met up with my teammates and congratulated them. Out of 6 people there we took 1st overall mens, 3 AG firsts, and an AG 3rd (yours truly!).

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not being in good shape yet. Still felt pretty good for this time of year.

Event comments:

Very well organized race and lots of fun. I was really happy with my 3rd AG award...didn't plan on that at all before the race so bonus.
