Pre-race routine:

up at 4:30, had cliff bar, sports drink and coffee on way to race, found a great parking space (always a challenge at the beach), waited in my car for a while since is was raining a bit and super windy
Event warmup:

walked to the gear drop place and starting corral, tried to stay out of the wind until the last minute, I never found any of my friends before the start
Run
  • 2h 26m
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

It was cold and windy at the start, mostly a headwind until we got up the course about 3 miles, I started slowly not really feeling inspired for the race, my 5 mile split was just under 58 minutes, decided to speed up just a bit, the wind coming off the ocean in Ft STory was fairly strong, my next 5 mile split was right around 55 minutes, pretty happy with that; I tried to pick up my speed for the last 5K but my legs started cramping; I was mad at myself for not bringing along any electrolyte tablets, had to settle for a 34 minute 5K; not bad but not quite as fats as I had wanted
What would you do differently?:

carry electrolytes, drink more gatorade along the way
Post race
Warm down:

went into the tent, had some Irish Stew and some beer, talked to a few friends but my legs were sore so I didn't stay long; I was tired of standing

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of speed training

Event comments:

this is a great local race that I do every year; one of these years we're going to have good weather

That does sound like a fun race- too bad I wasnt a runner when I lived in Va Beach!

Great job today in the yucky conditions, that windy, ocean air is tough!

Happy St Patricks day!

Nice race!!  Gatorade seemed kind of hard to come by at a few of the water stops.  Two of them were out by the time I got there.

It was really cold this morning.  I jumped in at the last minute, too, so I didn't get a chance to see you.

It was nice to see you again.  Let me know if you want to come ride some hills one weekend.

Nice run and yes one of these years the weather will be nice. I wanted to do it this year but the timing was off for me, maybe 2009.

Nice job Sue!

Bummer the bad weather and leg cramps for last part of the race.

Cool that you could pick up the pace for second 5 miles...speed work will come.

Irish stew and beer at finish line...excellant!

Sounds like they at least have nice post -race food.  Although the weather doesn't sound so good.  Nice race though.
